A woman has set up a petition for safeguarding parent and parking spaces for under 5s here

OP posts:
MrsBojingles · 24/05/2015 20:34

No I wouldn't sign. They are nice to have, but if I can manage getting the car seat with DD in and out of normal spaces with a bad back then I recon most parents can.

Now spaces for heavily pregnant ladies... That I would sign for. Dreaded getting stuck outside my car whilst pregnant.

hamiltoes · 24/05/2015 20:37

It is possible to get a sleeping baby out of a car seat without waking them.

Haha ok I wouldn't take the risk if I didn't have to.

If someone has parked too close you pull the car on the space and park side on to it to get your dc in.

With the baby in your arms and the 3 yo standing beside the car Hmm

Or, we could admit to the fact that we DO live in a first world country and have a few small spaces specifically to make those who struggles lives a little tiny bit easier.

There are about 3 at my local tesco fgs, your lucky if you would get 1 extra car in if they removed the extra space and shoved them all together.

They're a godsend when you have an infant carseat your taking in and out, or if you're on crutches, or not disbled enough for a blue badge.

I don't even drive and I really don't see the problem with them if they are for infants who can't walk and those with temporary mobility issues.

We should call them "accessible" spaces though in the hopes of putting of people who don't actually need them.

theendoftheendoftheend · 24/05/2015 20:39

Oh! No, I wouldn't leave a child in a trolley in a car park unattended, that sounds pretty unsafe. To me anyway.

AuntyMag10 · 24/05/2015 20:40

No I wouldn't sign, I won't encourage this sense of entitlement some people have just because they have kids. How do these same people cope at places without these spaces.

Notagainmun · 24/05/2015 20:42

I wish that all parking bays were a little bit wider so that all car doors can be opened wider so that everyone could could get in and out easier

PunkrockerGirl · 24/05/2015 20:42

Skeppers there will always be people who park like that, regardless of whether you're pregnant, disabled etc. bitter experience of trying to get back in the car after knee surgery
There seems to be a 'thing' on MN that inconsiderate parking only affects pregnant women and people with car seats Confused

DancingDinosaur · 24/05/2015 20:44

I don't think they should be right outside the doors. Further away with a walkway then fine. Free up the spaces for blue badge holders instead.

worridmum · 24/05/2015 20:44

Only problem with parent and child spaces is they are closer to the shop entrnace then the disabled spaces which is totally wrong

Floralnomad · 24/05/2015 20:45

Like other posters have said the spaces should be moved to the far side of the car park - after all it's apparently space that is needed not a short walk , if they were moved it would be interesting to see how many were used and I doubt it would be many .

worridmum · 24/05/2015 20:45

at my local tesco

I will not be signing any petion about it

Anotheronesoon · 24/05/2015 20:45

Yes I would. My 2.5 year old dented and scraped two car doors in the last 2 weeks because cars parked so close and I have had to leave baby on the road in car seat and manouver car out of space before as couldn't get door open wide enough to put car seat in. Think people are so mean and have no compassion these days for mums struggling with young children. Thought better of mumsnetters.

Anotheronesoon · 24/05/2015 20:47

And I wonder if the people who don't agree with these spaces are the same ones who won't stand for pregnant ladies on public transport.

mewkins · 24/05/2015 20:49

What a pointless piece of self publicity. The supermarkets own their own land and arrange their carparks as they see fit. Why would they or should they listen to the results of this petition? Parent and child spaces are useful for parents or carers getting their children out of a car and safely into the shop. Why would anyone waste energy on getting private land owners to rearrange their parking?

PurpleDaisies · 24/05/2015 20:51

Not the same issue at all anotherone. I'd stand for anyone who is clearly find it difficult to stand up. The petition is wanting to give parent and child spaces similar status to disabled parking bays. Surely that's not right.

Stubbed · 24/05/2015 20:54

No. Plenty of other things to get worked up about before worrying about that

ChuffinAda · 24/05/2015 20:56

I don't stand for anyone. See aforementioned disabilities.

I was made to stand on the tube from one side of London to the other. Which was fun balanced on crutches. I asked several people for a seat and strangely they all developed hearing problems and language barriers...

beavington · 24/05/2015 21:05

Eh i disagree with the petition but also with a lot on this thread. Parking spaces are tiny these days and i find getting my dc out of a 3 door car can result in my fat arse knocking the door open too wide when unloading and often when getting back a tank has parked right next which i find stressful since i actually dont want to scratch another car. I agree that all parking spaces should be made bigger but while cars are packed like sardines, i appreciate p and c spaces.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/05/2015 21:12

My 2.5 year old dented and scraped two car doors in the last 2 weeks

Shock I hope you left your details

fortunately · 24/05/2015 21:17

Another one I suggest you park further down the car park where the cars are not parked so title if your two year old can't get out of a car without causing damage. Why aren't you supervising him?

My car has sliding rear doors which are an absolute godsend.mso much easier with kids!

MidniteScribbler · 24/05/2015 21:17

On one occasion the person came back to their car and started shouting at me as my door was resting on the side of the car (I hadnt banged it, it was resting)

Yes, the person who was 'just resting' their door against my brand new car then made his car move as he was loading it and took a deep gouge out of the paintwork. Thanks very much. Don't use my car as a doorstop thanks very much.

fortunately · 24/05/2015 21:17

tight goddamned IPad

tobysmum77 · 24/05/2015 21:22

it always reminds me of the time some woman parked about 10cm from the side of my car, obviously cos she needed the space for her car seat..... yeah thanks for that, you didn't see my car seat then Hmm

I think they are necessary personally because trying to get 2 children in the car while stopping a trolley running off down the hill is easier if your can put said trolley up against your car.... but maybe other car parks are flat.

fakenamefornow · 24/05/2015 21:34

No I won't be signing it. All those wanting bigger parking spaces, how about you all get smaller cars instead? I expect it is cars that have grown unnecessarily large that is the problem rather than parking spaces shrinking.

freezation · 24/05/2015 21:57

Smaller car? We can only just about fit 2 adults and 3 children into ours as it is. And a ford focus is a normal sized car. I need space each side to open the doors wide. I don't care how far away.
