A woman has set up a petition for safeguarding parent and parking spaces for under 5s here

I'm going to be unpopular but I find p and c spaces necessary. I wouldn't sign the petition because I think it would be an unreasonable cost but I have 9 month old twins and a 3 year old. I would quite happily park in the furthest space from the shop if I meant I had room on both sides to get my children out. I have to get them out in their car seats at the moment and use the pushchair (not the toddler!) as there are rarely trolleys with double seats in. This means I need to open the doors wide both sides. P and c spaces should be further away to deter others from parking in them.

peltata · 24/05/2015 19:38

It's daft wanting legislation and ridiculous comparing it to disabled parking spaces. 3 dcs here not found the lack of p&c spaces are problem when they were little. Managed to get round walking, public transport used car only when necessary.

popcornpaws · 24/05/2015 19:46

No i wouldn't sign it, i don't think they should exist either.

RedRugNoniMouldiesEtc · 24/05/2015 19:48

Nope, I'd ban them altogether.

crustsaway · 24/05/2015 19:49

A no from me too. I totally agree with disabled spaces, depending on size of store, up to a max of 10. Ours has 20+ which again is ridiculous.

crustsaway · 24/05/2015 19:50

If you can walk around a superstore, you can walk from the car part to it.

crustsaway · 24/05/2015 19:51

park of course.

hamiltoes · 24/05/2015 19:53

Under 5???

Nope. I think thats a bit of a piss take aswell to be honest. They should be parent and INFANT spaces i.e for people who can't get the bloody car seat out of the car.

Never understood the need for them otherwise. What is the point in them?

ChuffinAda · 24/05/2015 19:54

Clearly you haven't got mobility issues.

Yes people can walk round the store, but then they could be exhausted and in a lot of pain. To walk to the far reaches of the carpark would be impossible.

It's why I and many others like me will continue to use these spaces.

Sirzy · 24/05/2015 19:55

20 spaces for people who are disabled out of a whole car park of hundreds of spaces is hardly excessive!

And hamitoes just leave the bloody car seat in the car!

crustsaway · 24/05/2015 20:01

No not at all terrible, 10 is ample for a normal sized supermarket.

Sirzy · 24/05/2015 20:03

Certainly wouldn't be enough at any of the very normal sized supermarkets locally

LaLyra · 24/05/2015 20:05

I'd be more inclined to sign a petition asking shops to make ALL spaces a decent size. That way people could get in an our cars easily with kids, bumps, bags, limps, etc without the risk of bashing another car because the car park planner seems to assume everyone drives teeny tiny cars.

crustsaway · 24/05/2015 20:05

Its is where I live.

hamiltoes · 24/05/2015 20:06

Sirzy Why wake a sleeping baby by getting them out when you don't need to Hmm

I'd rather they were parent and infant/ accessable spaces as someone upthread said, surgery, broken leg, heavily pregnant etc.

Surely thats better than how the space is currently used parents with anyone under the age of 16

EggsAreNotFromCows · 24/05/2015 20:08

No I wouldn't sign, and the comparison with disabled spaces Is of course unreasonable. I would, however, like to know what exactly you ARE supposed to do if other cars park so close to you that you can't get your baby in? On a practical level, what? This has happened to me so many times. On one occasion the person came back to their car and started shouting at me as my door was resting on the side of the car (I hadnt banged it, it was resting) but I couldn't get the door open any other way! And I had parked at the other end of the car park, but in the meantime he had pulled in next to me. I would totally be in favour of wider spaces, whatever you want to call them, being a long way from the shop. I don't need convenience, just to be able to physically get 3 small children in the car.

theendoftheendoftheend · 24/05/2015 20:12

I think parent and infant spaces are a good idea. I never understand why people have such a big issue with them tbh.
The whole 'back in my day' argument always makes me smile though, reminds me of my gran who thought my DM was ridiculous having a washing machine because 'back in her day she managed just fine without!' Bless her

hamiltoes · 24/05/2015 20:15

Quite agree theend

I never understand the whole mumsnet anti-entitled martyr brigade. "Oh I managed just fine with 3 kids a pregnant belly and a broken leg"... So? Hmm

ChuffinAda · 24/05/2015 20:19

It is possible to get a sleeping baby out of a car seat without waking them.

If someone has parked too close you pull the car on the space and park side on to it to get your dc in.

theendoftheendoftheend · 24/05/2015 20:22

Its not always possible to get them back in though Ada, which is actually more of a problem!

freezation · 24/05/2015 20:22

I can't picture what you mean chuffinada

theendoftheendoftheend · 24/05/2015 20:23

Ha! I like your example Hamil Wink

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 24/05/2015 20:23

No way would I sign it. I'm currently pregnant, it's my choice to have children. People don't choose to have a disability. People with children can cope without the spaces, yes it's cumbersome but it's not impossible. Every time I hear an argument about 'badges and regulations' over children parking spaces, it always comes over as entitled, first world problems. The only people entitled to a wider parking space is those with disabilities, otherwise just make do.

theendoftheendoftheend · 24/05/2015 20:25

Oh sorry Ada I just worked out what you mean. What do you do with the baby whilst manouvering your car about? Confused

ChuffinAda · 24/05/2015 20:32

Leave them in the trolley. It's a 30second maneuver if that. Pull out. Turn the car. Park. Load baby.
