to ask if this is an OOH job?

Long story short, months of agonising stomach pain. Back and forth to doctors constantly, told they suspect an ulcer. Been taking tablets so now I get say a week pain free followed by a week in agony.
Doctor told me to book a h.pylori blood test. Can't get through to the phlebotomy service, have been trying for 4 weeks now. Just started a new job and in the middle of training so can't take time off anyway.

Yesterday the pain was so bad all day I felt constantly sick, it was right up in my shoulder as well as my stomach, dizzy, unable to focus, everything. Got worse when I got home from work, couldn't regulate my temperature, had a fever and was in so much pain. My stomach has swollen and it feels like there's a solid lump when im standing up, its literally rock solid. Today I feel marginally better but I'm still stuck in bed, temperature is fairly high and I am in pain. My heart is still skipping beats and jumping all over the place.

I don't know if out of hours could do anything for me. DP is adamant I don't need it but the pain has never left me like this before.

WIBU to go to out of hours? They'll be so busy this weekend :(

She asked about the breath test, id never heard about it before.

OP posts:
Twirlwirlywoo · 24/05/2015 15:58

I had H Pylori test done - by breath this was after a myriad of bloods that gave no clues to my tummy pain.

Twirlwirlywoo · 24/05/2015 16:00

Ooh lost half my post!

I had mine done at GPs. Perhaps ask if you can have it done.

Sorry you have no solid answers. Demand to see GP on Tuesay - say you have been in A&E at the weekend and do not take no for an answer.

fearandloathinginambridge · 24/05/2015 16:02

de-lurking to say that if an endoscopy is booked in then they can use the opportunity for a biopsy test for h.pylori. So glad you went to A&E Jorah.

jorahmormont · 24/05/2015 16:57

Thank you for the firm but kind pushing. Was the right thing to do. Now to push for this endoscopy. Don't much like the sound of it as even the doctor said "its unpleasant" but I want to know what the hell is going on in there :(

OP posts:
KurriKurri · 24/05/2015 17:01

Endoscopy is quite doable, not fun but perfectly manageable - I've had one recently - and its over very quickly - five minutes, and a nurse will hold your hand all the way through and talk you through it.
(Mine was also for possible ulcer)

ALittleFaith · 24/05/2015 17:04

I had an endoscopy recently. Have the sedation! It's not a nice experience but I felt the pros of getting answers outweighs the short term discomfort of the procedure. I hope you get some answers OP.

ScarlettDarling · 24/05/2015 17:11

jorah I recently had an endoscopy. It most certainly is unpleasant -the nurse on duty who was a friend of a friend of mine described it as "the worst blow job you'll ever give!!"-but its incredibly quick. Mine took less than 5 minutes and I was given results immediately. They also offer sedation if you feel you need it. So don't worry about that.

Be reassured that you've been well checked over, but you must get to the GP first thing Tuesday, (yes, tell them you do need an emergency appointment!) and get a referral for that endoscopy. As far as I'm aware, h pylori is by far the most common cause of ulcers, so I think your gp has been really lacking in diagnosing you with an ulcer without testing for h pylori. I had a blood test for it which came back inconclusive, so then did a stool sample which came back clear. The treatment for h pylori is antibiotics, no big deal.

Just one thing, you have to stop taking any ppi meds such as lanzaprazole at least 2 weeks before endoscopy, so if you're on anything like that you will probably have to come off it, obviously if gp advises.

ChuffinAda · 24/05/2015 17:14

I've had an endoscopy and would say make sure you're sedated for it.

I have gastritis and a hiatus hernia and the pain can be unbearable sometimes and also can feel like a lump has formed at the top of the stomach. As I said previously it has put me in hospital many times.

Good luck

jorahmormont · 24/05/2015 17:18

The thought of being off tge esomeprazole for two weeks is enough to make me feel sick :(

OP posts:
ChuffinAda · 24/05/2015 17:19

I continued to take mine and I'm on a hefty 40mg dose Twice a day.

MargoReadbetter · 24/05/2015 17:22

Scarlett- the OP says in her first post that the GP asked her to book for H pylori but she didn't get round to doing it.

I hope you get an answer soon, OP. Don't forget you can still contact OOH before Tuesday if you feel you need to.

fearandloathinginambridge · 24/05/2015 17:25

I have had a couple of endoscopies. You should have the sedation if you are anxious. I didn't have it and found the experience uncomfortable but bearable. It was over fairly quickly and I felt fine. I think they won't discharge you after sedation without someone to take you home so make sure you take a friend or partner.

jorahmormont · 24/05/2015 20:21

Psyching myself up to go in all guns blazing on Tuesday. My GP is really good, she said it's the consultants at the hospital who wouldn't agree to it, but if they won't do it, I'll find the money to go private.

OP posts:
ChuffinAda · 24/05/2015 20:36

You need a referral to the gastric surgeons they do all the tests etc.

Meanwhile you need to eat bland food. Keep off the onions, garlic, tomatoes, citrus, milk and dairy. Have a look at the GERD diet on Google.

Good luck!

Twirlwirlywoo · 24/05/2015 20:47

Your GP should be able to write to the surgeons again. She now has a better case for you , as you have been seen in A&E.

Its awful you have to fight and its hard when you are ill but keep at it. Tuesday will be hard to get an appointment because of all the people that have been ill over the long weekend but insist on an appointment and say you have been in A&E and they have told you that you must be seen that day.

Good luck

jorahmormont · 24/05/2015 20:59

Our GP does a walk in so as long as I'm there first on Tuesday morning I'll be fine. No idea what the procedure is for calling in sick at work...

Still don't feel I can eat anything so food not a problem!

OP posts:
GobblersKnob · 25/05/2015 06:56

Hope you are in less pain this morning jorah, you really need to get some answers, hopefully that will be soon.

jorahmormont · 26/05/2015 09:23

Been to the doctors, h pylori test sent off, liver tests also done, more ranitidine and been told to go back or to out of hours if its worse/no better. She thinks they'll accept me for a camera if they show they've tried all the other tests they can do, so thats the plan. She couldn't feel it today as it was so painful but said if it continues they'll have tp to look at sending me to hospital to speed things up a bit.

OP posts:
PixieChops · 26/05/2015 16:13

Glad you managed to get in at te docs Jorah and please don't be scared of going to Out of hours if you feel you need to. Glad you're getting yourself sorted and hoping you're feeling better soon. Did you manage to rest much over the weekend?

jorahmormont · 26/05/2015 16:34

The GP said straight to out of hours if it gets worse, back to GP if it doesn't get better and A&E if it is significantly worse so at least I know I'm not overreacting!

I didn't rest much but I managed to get some rest today so I feel up to work tomorrow at least :)

OP posts:
jorahmormont · 04/06/2015 09:23

Just thought I'd post a quick update, no improvement on the pain :( been back at work but called in sick again today as it's really bad. Went to the doctors, h pylori isn't back yet I don't think but inflammation is up, the doctor I saw today said that the lump and swelling in my stomach feels fine? It doesn't feel fine to me it's bloody uncomfortable!!

I'm back on amitriptiline but a double dose now. Slightly nervous as I know it can cause suicidal thoughts?

I don't even care what's causing it anymore. I just want to feel better. Just want the pain to stop :( they're going to monitor my weight while I'm not eating.

OP posts:
jorahmormont · 04/06/2015 16:33

Sorry to post again, the more I read about this amitriptiline the less I like the sound of it. Has anyone been on it? Is it as bad as it sounds and will it help with the pain?

OP posts:
Indomitable · 04/06/2015 19:10

sorry to hear you're still not well, OP.

Nothing useful to add either. Just bumping for the post-bedtime gang.

SoldierBear · 04/06/2015 19:47

I was on amitriptiline for about 18 months for neuralgia.
(Was also on Prozac for depression)
The ami didn't make feel suicidal - I think it actually helped me deal better with my depression. I loved the fact that i took it at night and then was unconscious about 15 minutes later!
hope you get a proper diagnosis and treatment
