AIBU?

To hate just about all forms of exercise

On my way to the gym.

Dreading it. Hate getting sweaty. Hate puffing and panting. Hate the aches and pains.

Apparently this is wrong and I should love it and it will lift my mood and make me happy and glowy.

Aibu. I just this is wrong and HATE it!

I've never had the endorphin high either. I prefer the gym because it's climate controlled and I can watch iplayer.

YANBU OP, I hate pretty much all forms of exercise too. Exercise is shit. I can't even spell it properly without autocorrect.

I've had the endorphins thing, but it needs to last longer than the two to three hours it's just taken me to get to the gym, do the exercise, shower and wash my hair to be worth it.

I don't mind doing yoga, but the classes are quite expensive and I can't see it doing much unless I'm at them nearly every day. Wouldn't mind swimming but it's too much palaver with the hair washing every time (I have a lot of hair that takes too much effort). And everything else is too much like hard work.

I'm too self-conscious to run or cycle. I walk as much as possible and go to the gym and do forest yoga. I find I can block everyone else out and switch off a bit there but know it's not for everyone.

I wouldn't say I exactly enjoy exercise. I hated PE with a passion at school. Was always last picked. Not into team sports. It put me off exercise for 40 years.

I'm the same as you, OP. I have been forcing myself to go to the gym but really really hate it. And I'm no good at team sports, I'm frightened of cycling on the road and I don't trust my knees' ability to withstand the pressure of running, so there isn't much left.

Our gym is horrible - that doesn't help. The walls are a kind of lime green colour and there's always some awful music being pumped out. There's almost no natural light. It's about as unappealing as it's possible to make it.

How about a team sport - eg netball or badminton

It's much more fun and it's social too.

welliesinthespring · 17/05/2015 14:20

I'd definitely be beyond useless at a team sport! Anything I would actually enjoy would be very costly indeed.

It's the faff, isn't it Needle? Going. Exercising. Back. Showering. Hair washing. Hair drying.

YANBU at all. I loathe all forms of exercise. Unfortunately it has to be done.

Apparently if you suffer from fatigue you can use up your low adrenal supplies doing high impact exercise which leaves you feeling like you have a hangover afterwards, or the next day, in which case, movement is important to get your system going but too much is bad so brisk walking, yoga, Pilates, cycling all preferably outdoors is better.

I don't have fatigue I don't think - just lazy and CBA Grin

I love going to the gym would go every day if I could but enjoy a good run or bike ride just as much. Also not everyone can hate the gym, there are always plenty of people in ours!

I have a personal trainer and I used to enjoy it but now I hate it (because I've put all back on the weight I initially lost). However PT has become a good friend and I don't want to upset her so I keep doing it.

I have a dog, who doesn't get walked enough cause I hate long walks.

I have fitness dvds I haven't opened.

A fitbit that is stuck permanently at about 5000 steps (instead of 10,000)

I too need to learn to love exercise!

Report
welliesinthespring · 17/05/2015 15:23

I have concluded I will never learn to love it! I just endure it! Grin

I have an iPhone with a LOT of space. I watch TV series on it as I exercise. It helps me focus on something else.

I'm also on the 'just endure' spectrum here. I hate all forms of exercise - indoor and out, team and classes, yoga, pilates etc. All vile. I treat going to the gym as a necessity like taking necessary medication, brushing my teeth etc. I don't mind walking as long as it's dry and not windy. Hence, not many days when both these happen simultaneously. At least the gym is always dry. So glad when it's done and dusted though.

Another one in the "just endure" camp here. I hate it. I'm fairly fit and active these days - cycle to work and do fitness DVDs on work mornings for half an hour or so - but the endorphin thing completely eludes me. I went for the DVD option because it's less faff than the gym. Jillian Michaels is my friend, because her DVDs are very effective and she also admits exercise sucks.

I keep going partly because I'm in my forties and I want to go on fitting into my clothes, and partly because I don't want to be a frail old lady in years to come. Enjoyment doesn't come into it.

I hate going to the gym but i love pole fitness. My body is coming strong incredibly quickly, im losing weight and i can see results. Far better than slogging in the gym for an hour
