AIBU?

To hate just about all forms of exercise

On my way to the gym.

Dreading it. Hate getting sweaty. Hate puffing and panting. Hate the aches and pains.

Apparently this is wrong and I should love it and it will lift my mood and make me happy and glowy.

Aibu. I just this is wrong and HATE it!

So I'll see you in some sportives then Olivia Grin
Best thing about road cycling is that its a sport where cake stops are perfectly normal - our club rides are based around a nice cafe, and sportives have feed stations with cake/brownies/flapjack (and some healthy options).

I run, swim and cycle, and would utterly hate going to the gym. Its bad enough sharing a lane with other people at swimming. And I'm not saying I always enjoy what I do at the time, but I love the sense of achievement as I get faster and can go further.

Mine don't either, even with the saddle lowered, so I sympathise.

I don't think I get endorphin highs.

I get a huge sense of relief once a gym/run session is over and I get a grim satisfaction in reducing my times at park run as often as I can ( still slow as an overpacked mule).

I get even grumpier if I can't exercise but don't particularly enjoy it when I'm participating, oh and I'd like to punch those stupid people who whoop in our metafit class, I hate them because it takes every granule of energy I have to just keep going, never mind voluntarily showing additional enjoyment and exertion - thankfully I'm too exhausted and fatigued to lift my arms any higher than they need to go.

I don;t really like it. However I love being a size 10 ,having a tight butt and a flat defined stomach. I am in my 50s and have exercised most of my life. SO I commit to 5 hours a week.

I train at the gym 6 days per week and I love it < GF > :
boxing, lifting heavy, HIIT circuits, Tabata, spin - anything where I'm sweating, panting, grunting and being totally unladylike & scary Grin
I enjoy the music and the earthy camaraderie, a great contrast to my very cerebral science work.

I've always been fit - I'm 58 - and I almost always get the endorphin rush which pumps me up, makes me feel invincible and 10' tall (instead of 5'3")

Maybe you can try out more classes and something will just click. Or find an exercise buddy.

I bloody HATE going to the gym with my friend! She keeps trying to TALK to me!

Doesn't she realise that I can't TALK when hauling my fat ass round the gym?

When I die and go to hell ... It will be a gym, I'm convinced of it.

any movement is exercise. Not to move at all if you are physically capable is an abuse of good health.

team sport can be anything but, the gym can be no fun - but there is something you enjoy. Keep trying until you find out.

or just go for a walk.

I nearly started this thread last week I hate exercise but I was finding it very hard to lose weight. fasting didnt work 1200 a day didn't work I was hungry and fed up so grudgingly decided to try exercise.

I exercised 6 days a week for the last six weeks and hated every second. I stayed off the scales so I wouldn't sabotage myself. it was hard exercise for me I was breathless and sore I couldn't have managed more .

six weeks in I'm the exact same weight, I didnt eat back the calories , and my hips are actually bigger. it makes me Sad and people doing the same series starting at the same weight lost loads of pounds and inches .

at no point did I feel an endorphin or ever feel like it was getting easier

I think some of us are not wired to gt that endorphin thing from exercise.

Walking is so very dull, it takes so long.

Why do I need to enjoy it? What is wrong with merely enduring it?

I reckon it s about finding something you get a buzz from, it doesn't all have to be mad high energy buzz either - the slow burn from long walks etc
I love running swimming
I can't play tennis, join a Zumba class or do stuff that involves co ordination to save my life
I hate re while gym / circuits thing and have never lost weight with it - all I do is bulk up serious muscle and end up bigger.
However walking - for longer, ages swimming and running keep me for and toned and I get the buzz from it wih some Pilates and yoga thrown in for good measure.
I think if you spend the entire time you re exercising focusing on how much you hate it - there s no way you re going to get endorphins, you ve got to work on the PMA too.

Walking is good because it gets me somewhere and I don't need to be in special clothes to do it.

I can achieve something useful at the same time as doing exercise, rathe than having to go to a special place and get into special clothes and carry a towel and other clothes so I can shower and change when I'm done.

Sounds more like nerves or anxiety OP. Maybe you're overthinking things - try not going it expecting it to be marvellous and leaving you feeling fantastic, and just focus on getting it done, treat it a bit like brushing your teeth.

I run, and much of it is hard work, especially if you want to get faster. But it has benefits, such as making you lose weight, being healthier, looking better, etc which are worth it.

I hate and loathe exercise classes with a passion though! And spin classes - my idea of hell. Inside exercise in a gym is too stressful for me, its too public - but different things suit different people.

Try skating. Its fab.

And its great for your arse.

Cycling is the way to go. No need to be sociable or show lard / knobbly knee / total lack of fitness in front of gym bunnies or deal with germ-ridden public transport. Go in the early morning and it's nice and quiet. You can spend lots of £ on a fancy bike and feel superior to other people on cheap bikes or you can use a cheap bike and feel all superior and thrifty compared to people on daft fancy bikes. Also if you go on a long ride it is oblig to stop for Cake. And sometimes you get to ride behind a man with a nice bum and tight shorts on.

All other forms of exercise are just too much effort and you have to be nice to people or pay money, and sod that

Not mad keen on cycling. I've nowhere to keep a bike anyway - it'd be ruined.

I used to like ice skating but the nearest rink is an hour and a half away! If I moan about the gym, I'd definitely moan about ice skating!

I only get the endorphin high from running. I couldn't run for two years due to a knee injury and I tried a zillion other excercises. Hated them all with a passion and didn't get the high. Just started running again last week (ignoring injured knee) and the highs are back. I feel great.

I hate the gym and gym classes, but I keep going because I know I need to be fit.

To the PPs on here who are saying "go running", "try cycling", that's fine if it works for you, but I can't fit it into my lifestyle. I work full time, have dc, and live very rurally (no pavements, no street lights). Running in the dark down country roads with NSL is NOT fun. Better at this time of year, but still nerve wracking.

I can go to the gym in the evenings., after I have fed the family. It's not great but it fits in. I leave the house at 7.30am and really can't fit exercise in before then.

And I never get that buzz after exercising either. Sad

Have NC'd as this is quite identifying. I'm with the enduring camp, and don't get any great high from it.

You don't have to enjoy it wellies, but it helps if you do, doesn't it.

I joined gym about a year ago, and I do classes now. I try and do 6 per wk. Some are quite difficult and for proper fit people. I hide at the back for those. Some are more aerobic and people of all abilities go. For those classes, I go much nearer the front. And the amazing and unexpected thing is that I've made friends there. Like real proper friends - we go out and everything! It's been amazing. People are pleased to see me when I come in, and miss me when I don't make it. I was never expecting that, and it's what gets me there.

I'm very rubbish. Scarlet or purple. Sweaty. Unable to keep up. But I can do more than I did, and I'm working on it!

Good luck to Wellies and all of you who find it hard. Have some Cake

I would also struggle to fit walking/cycling into my lifestyle.

Plus, the gym machines tell me the calories I've burned. That's the best bit!

Concentrate totally on the exercise you are doing and give it your all: don't watch the clock and wish it over, live in the moment.

You may get endorphins if you ramp up the intensity - personally, exercise has to be vigorous & full blast for endorphins to come.
E.g. I don’t do yoga: If God wants me to crawl around the floor, she’ll put chocolate there.

If all else fails:
Keep the TV and the biccy tin as far apart as possible, so at least you get SOME exercise Wink

UsedToBe You might find it more convenient & less stressful to exercise at home e.g. rope skipping, bodyweight squats, pressups, tricep dips, burpees etc to your own choice of music. Then your own comfy shower.
