To cut of ties with brother for Islamophobic Views?

Jacobsmum1972 · 16/05/2015 18:30

My brother had become increasingly hateful towards Muslims. His fb feed has been full of British Firsts articles to do with Rotherham and other bad stories linked towards the Islamic community.

He never used to be islamophobic, but really since a year ago he has gotten worse and worse. Which makes me believe groups like Isis and stories like Rotherham are fuelling his hatred.

He is about 10 years younger than me, so is in the islamophobic generation (press name). People who were teens during 9/11 and have had all their adolescent and young adult lives in a climate of fear.

This is not an excuse and obviously not all of he's generation are islamophobic.

I can no longer listen to his lies and hatred. I don't know what to do, I don't want to cause a massive row with my moter and have family tension.

I am not exactly worried that keeping a relationship with my brother will influence my dc beliefs about Muslims as they have been taught what is right and what Is wrong and that not all Muslims are bad etc. Although ds is very worried about me being killed in a terror attack.

What would you do.

Sad

*to me, not toe Hmm

Lavenderice · 16/05/2015 23:23

Do people not see that he supports Britain First?

Stinkersmum · 16/05/2015 23:24

Shoot? That was meant to say 'a shit'.

SlaggyIsland · 16/05/2015 23:24

Oh ffs. Every fucking time. Last bastion of prejudices on Mumsnet are fat people and Muslims.
Of course it's not okay to be horrible about, what, 1.6billion people globally? If OPs brother was homophobic or racist would that be okay? I bet people would be falling over themselves to tell her to cut him off.

SlaggyIsland · 16/05/2015 23:26

And no I can't agree that modern Muslim thinking looks like medieval anything. For fuck's sake, seriously? You'd say that to the faces of my friends, colleagues and neighbours? Because that's just disgraceful.

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/05/2015 23:28

Certain Islamic sects appear to have quite a medieval mindset, Wahabism, for example.

FarFromAnyRoad · 16/05/2015 23:30

Why don't you tell me bumwad. I'm not sure of the purpose of your question.

SlaggyIsland · 16/05/2015 23:31

I don't disagree about Wahabism Alis - exported by the Saudis across the globe, unopposed by their chums, namely us and the US. It's caused untold suffering mostly in the Middle East and Africa.

lordStrange · 16/05/2015 23:33

Perhaps Islam needs a makeover then Slaggy? To look a like a forward thinking women friendly peaceful movement.

Because the rest of the world are saying horrible things about islam right now.

Roseforarose · 16/05/2015 23:43

Blowing up planes is nowt to do with Islam
It's everything to do with Islam, they are the only ones who do it. When was the last time a Hindu, a Christian or a Jew blew up a plane.

Ginrummy · 16/05/2015 23:47

This thread makes me so so sad. There's a difference between Muslims and extremists. I don't like religion but I really don't like sweeping generalisations borne of daily mail shite propaganda.

SlaggyIsland · 16/05/2015 23:48

Well Jews bombed Gaza into a smoking ruin and children into bloody smithereens.
Oh hang on, I have the nous to realise that it was Israelis and not Jews.

Ginrummy · 16/05/2015 23:49

What about the IRA?

PoppyField · 16/05/2015 23:50

Slaggy I am a yoghurt-knitting, left-leaning liberal. I don't drop litter and help spiders out of the bath but I don't think being rude about religion is at all reprehensible. On that basis I'm Christianity-phobic, Islamophobic, Judeo-phobic, Jedi Knight-phobic - the full set. If people choose to believe in utter nonsense, then fine let them. I know there are a few people in my circle who choose to believe in gods/magic/praying - and some of them are very nice people. I don't have to make an effort to 'tolerate' them and as long as they don't shove it down my throat , we're dandy. Similarly, I'm sure some of my friends vote Tory, but they don't go on about it, thankfully, and we get along just fine.

And of course being racist or homophobic is utterly wrong and foul. There's a big difference between the two and it has to do with choice.

p.s. I'm looking forward to a forward-thinking, woman-friendly religion too - but it wouldn't be a religion then would it?

Ginrummy · 16/05/2015 23:51

Everyone seems to have forgotten that extremists from other religions blow stuff up too.

Roseforarose · 16/05/2015 23:53

I don't think the IRA ever blew a plane up though did they?

Ginrummy · 16/05/2015 23:55

Times changed.

lordStrange · 16/05/2015 23:57

Poppyfield, there is a foreword thinking women friendly religion. Its called Buddhism. But that really is the only one I can think of.

keepitsimple0 · 16/05/2015 23:57

Everyone seems to have forgotten that extremists from other religions blow stuff up too.

do they do it in the name of their religion? Do they do it with justification from their holy book?

PoppyField · 16/05/2015 23:58

The IRA didn't really do suicide missions. Sure if they'd had a remote control...

Ginrummy · 17/05/2015 00:01

I'm with slaggyisland. I don't post very often but this thread has such an overwhelmingly narrow minded set of posts I felt the need to.

Ginrummy · 17/05/2015 00:02

Of course it was about religion.

PoppyField · 17/05/2015 00:02

Oh I thought that lordStrange... till I heard about those Buddhist extremists chasing out those poor boat (Muslim) people in Myanmar. I thought 'Buddhist extremist' was an oxymoron, but obviously I was wrong.

Very disappointed though.

Stinkersmum · 17/05/2015 00:03

Ginrummy whilst it doesn't in anyway condone their actions, the IRA were fighting for independence, to get their land back, to escape British rule. What do you think the motivation is for Islamic extremists?

lordStrange · 17/05/2015 00:06

There you go, Poppyfield. Give up all religion people, for peace sake!
