to ask if anyone has had a psychic reading that was extremely accurate?

One that could not be down to cold reading. For example, giving out very specific details such as exact dates, unusual names, basically precise facts that cannot be fished for or guessed and are not vague?

Silver, obviously it's hard when only going off you are saying, but I can absolutely guarantee you that what she told you has nothing to do with any mystical nonsense. People don't remember the details, but if you were to be given a recording of the session to watch objectively you'll most likely be shocked by how badly you remember what actually was said - it happens to everyone. It's a mix of cold reading, coincidence and confirmation bias.

It's always explainable. Always.

TTWK · 10/05/2015 21:14

There is an incredible arrogance in people who simply refuse to believe they have been tricked. When David Blane apparently walked thru the Great Wall of China, because it was part of a magic show, everyone accepted he had tricked us. No one knew how he did it, and I still don't, but I've never met anyone who actually believes he walked thru a solid wall.

But when it comes to psychics, people refuse to believe they've seen a trick and think it's real. It's the most bizarre thing.

Especially when half an hours research on the internet will show you plenty of videos on how it's done. People leaving readings convinced that they've been told loads of stuff the psychic could not have possibly have known, only to have the psychic explain after the even that they are in fact a debunker of this nonsense and to explain exactly how they did it without having any paranormal abilities whatsoever.

James Randi has been offering $1m for decades to anyone who can demonstrate psychic abilities under proper controlled conditions. The money goes unclaimed.

silverglitterpisser · 10/05/2015 21:23

Kid I believe it is explainable in a non woo way, I just don't c an explanation? If that lady could predict in such fine detail what would happen to me by using cold reading n coincidence then dang she's good!

I've seen many a FT n waded through loads of shite waiting for one prediction to b accurate lol but this one to me was just so detailed, so specific n so u'd wonder why she'd do that ? I mean she could just predict pregnancy n claim a win, by adding all the specifics she's really narrowed her chances of getting it right?

MrsSheRa · 10/05/2015 21:24

Well, I'm a believer in it fack . I believe you. I have had readings and even my own notions about things that have come true. I tend to put it down to a very good instinct and judgement of peoples characters, but who knows.

Of course there will be sceptics, it is a pretty mind blowing concept, contacting the dead etc.

Ive read tarot for years but I'm not fluent with it, still need to refer to the handbook for some explanations Grin

I couldn't give a fuck what people think of me for it.

kua · 10/05/2015 21:26

Compost I have pretty much stated that I'm not a believer in woo. However, I can say that I think that Fackinell has eloquently described her view point without attacking those personally who disagree.

silverglitterpisser · 10/05/2015 21:28

TTWK I don't think it's arrogance personally, it's more that u'd like a scientific explanation but none of those seem to be spot on either so u r not quite sure what to believe. I don't care whether science or spirits predicted my dts, it was just very clever either way! Well, that's my stance as it was a harmless fun visit, where I get the rage is when those who r grieving r manipulated Angry .

LostPuppy · 10/05/2015 21:30

Not unreasonable. Just a bit dim. Psychics are frauds.

MrsSheRa · 10/05/2015 21:35

I'm incredibly dim then.

TTWK · 10/05/2015 21:36

Do any of the believers understand what confirmation bias actually is. It's hardwired into the human brain, to ignore the misses and focus on the hits. And so called psychics use this inbuilt weakness we all have to great effect.

During the course of a reading, they will often tell you completely opposite things. "You are married someone tall and dark" and later on in the reading "you are married someone short and fair". But you will only recall the correct one.

Sometimes when I call my mum she says "that's amazing, I was just thinking about you." She has never once said to me "what the fuck are you ringing for, I wasn't even thinking about you" or "you should have phoned earlier, that's when I was thinking about you."

But she would have you believe that every time she thinks about me, I call her!

Shakey1500 · 10/05/2015 21:43

I think there are people who have some kind of "otherworldliness" about them and can impart certain things genuinely. Equally I believe there's a helluva lot of imposters out there. Puts me on the fence I guess.

I wish I was a bit more woo. My Dad died when I was 4 and whilst it's absolutely true that I would read into anything, I sometimes wish I would hear from him. I did get a message (in person) from someone who is woo-ified and I was comforting Smile

FarFromAnyRoad · 10/05/2015 21:56

I'm still on the fence - sat, presumably, wtih Shakey. I do think it's kind of sad how very rude some posters have been to Fack. It rather puts me in mind of the same kind of 'in-yer-face' rudeness displayed by the Labour voters who posted in this same rude superior way towards anyone who didn't believe in their bloody cause! Could they, I wonder, have been the same people?
I just don't get why it's ok to be so rude and abrupt just because you don't believe something. What's wrong with saying 'Oh, I don't believe that but I'll listen politely to what you have to say, maybe question you a little and be respectful of your beliefs'. If that's too difficult for you - and I accept that it might be - why not just leave the thread and go bully some more Tory voters?

willowtree62 · 10/05/2015 21:59

Is there a website or any information where you can find the details of any reliable mediums? I would love to go to one.

sliceofsoup · 10/05/2015 22:06

I agree Far.

I have had some dreams that came true. I have had very vivid dreams since I can remember, but those particular dreams felt different, and with each one, I had told other people about them the next day, and then events happened a few days later. It could all be rationalized away, so I am not prepared to claim any special powers, but the feelings were pretty strong and hard to ignore.

So although I do think that the majority of psychics and mediums aren't what they claim to be, I have a niggle in the back of my mind about our spirituality.

EastMidsMummy · 10/05/2015 22:34

It's not rude to question people's barmy beliefs. If anything, it'd be rude not to.

FarFromAnyRoad · 10/05/2015 22:36

Of course it's not rude to question someone's beliefs - are you deliberately misunderstanding me? It's all about tone. Go read some of the anti-Tory voter threads and maybe you'll see what I mean - although I expect all those comments have been deleted.

Hakluyt · 10/05/2015 23:01

Threads like this are very difficult. I don't think anyone has been rude to Fack- unless you consider no agreeing with her to be rude. If somebody comes on a thread and says "I have psychic powers" then they have to expect, surely, for people to say "no you don't, and here's why"

Derren Brown regularly demonstrates how all the examples given on this thread could be done. He has done all of them, and more. Every time any paranormal phenomenon is properly investigated, it turns out to have a perfectly rational explanation. It is true that science doesn't know everything-science is not finished. But it does know some things.

Tangofandango · 10/05/2015 23:08

Hak I'd be interested to know how Derren Brown or anyone else would be able to describe my home inside and out without ever visiting it, knowing where it was, or knowing me or anything about me, and without me telling them anything at all.

I'd also like to know how they would be able to tell me about someone I'd met on holiday, where we met, where the other person lives, our age difference, his name, and our preferred mode of transport to visit each other. Without me telling them anything at all.

ComposHatComesBack · 10/05/2015 23:16

I will repeat what I've said before. Everyone has a right to air their views, but not the right to have treated with unquestioned defference.

If you make an extrodinary claim you need to supply extrodinarily solid evidence and be prepared to defend it. It is not rude to ask for this proof especially when the claim is so mind bogglingly massive. Nor is it rude to ask people to consider more logical and straightforwaed explanations.

Hakluyt · 10/05/2015 23:17

Have you seen his work? Spend some time on UTube o read one of his books. I don't know how your reader did it, obviously, but I am prepared to bet if you were able to watch a film of the reading and what led up to it with an open mind you would be able to work it out.

kua · 10/05/2015 23:26

Just a thought, (looking out the window at the pouring rain) wouldn't it be nice to think there was something more out there?

Tangofandango · 10/05/2015 23:27

I have a tape of the reading. The woman knew nothing about me beforehand. I went into the room, sat down, picked some cards. She asked me nothing. I told her nothing. I have an open mind, I don't sit there trying to fit whatever she says into my life. I am very aware that people can read body language or try to get info from casual conversation. There was none of that.

OhMittens · 10/05/2015 23:32

I believe fackinell.

ComposHatComesBack · 10/05/2015 23:32

Kua it would be nice if it was raining fifty pound notes and champagne, but it doesn't mean it is.

kua · 10/05/2015 23:38

Compost that's the exact opposite of what I was thinking.

ComposHatComesBack · 10/05/2015 23:47

I'm sorry you've lost me there.
