I voted Conservative, and am happy to admit it - why don't other Tory voters feel the same?

I voted Conservative, and am delighted with the election result. However no one else seems to admit to being a Tory voter, but there are clearly lots of us around. I told someone at work about my voting preferences - she looked at me as if I'd just killed a puppy.

DH commented that being left-wing is a more fashionable view, even if you don't agree with left-wing politics.

I think he has a point. And I get heartily sick of people who brag about being brought up on a council estate, holding it up as a badge of honour, assuming this gives more weight to their opinions than those of us who come from a different sort of background. It's some weird, inverted snobbery thing.

I totally agree with David Cameron's comments about wanting to ensure a good life for those of us who are prepared to work for it. What's so wrong with that????

Well for a start because the notion that people who work hard get ahead and those who are struggling are there because they didn't work hard is a complete fallacy.

It would be really nice if it were true, but it's not.

And, it doesn't take into account those who are unable to work hard. Disabled people, those with ill health (including mental health), children, elderly.

It's a bit like being a shirker. No one admits to that either - although we surely all shirk at some point. Show me someone who doesn't think they're hard-working.

I voted tory too. Mainly because as I said on the other thread, I am fed up to the back teeth of lazy bastards at work refusing to work more than 16 hours a week because they'll lose a bit of tax credits. Thus leaving their workmates who aren't eligible for tax credits doing all the extra work.

And they can't see the irony in calling US selfish.

It is because they voted for them despite knowing people will suffer. Not everyone can work and it is not as simple as 'get a job'.

I voted Tory. I am not ashamed nor would I shout it from the rooftops. I didn't when I voted labour. Its just not me to shout about who I vote for.

Its not for any of the reasons outlined in the OP and I have said why on mn a few times. I don't regret it. Although I would have preferred another coalition.

As a Conservative having visited many Labour areas I think Labour policies are destructive. Labour were in power for 13 years and made things worse. That's why we now have a Conservative government.

I was brought up on a council estate AND I voted Tory.

(council estate upbringing was in the 60s and 70s - it wasn't any better under Labour)

Iamashitlawyer - I thought you had to work in excess of 16 hrs to even GET Tax Credits these days. Surely it is your employer that decides contracts and working hours. If you have an issue with work overload then take it up with your Manager not your colleagues.

David Cameron and a lot of his colleagues seem to have a good life because they were born into wealth and had an immensely privileged upbringing, not because they worked any harder than anyone else. Then they introduce tax breaks etc to ensure that people like them get to keep money that they have not worked hard for.

So when certain Tories talk about how other people should work for their money, it seems a bit, ahem, rich.

A few things:

  • a 0.8% shift to the Tories versus the last election wouldn't mean a huge shift in the political leanings of posters here.
  • people who actively want things to change are going to be more vocal than those who are happy with things the way they are.

There are gazillions of threads with loads of Tories of them on this subject. They are not hard to find.
