I voted Conservative, and am happy to admit it - why don't other Tory voters feel the same?

I voted Conservative, and am delighted with the election result. However no one else seems to admit to being a Tory voter, but there are clearly lots of us around. I told someone at work about my voting preferences - she looked at me as if I'd just killed a puppy.

DH commented that being left-wing is a more fashionable view, even if you don't agree with left-wing politics.

I think he has a point. And I get heartily sick of people who brag about being brought up on a council estate, holding it up as a badge of honour, assuming this gives more weight to their opinions than those of us who come from a different sort of background. It's some weird, inverted snobbery thing.

I totally agree with David Cameron's comments about wanting to ensure a good life for those of us who are prepared to work for it. What's so wrong with that????

I was brought up on a council estate, am from Liverpool, and I voted Tory - shock horror!

This was because I agree with more of their policies than any other party. And I actually read each party's manifesto - seemingly unlike a lot of Labour voters who I have seen on social media the last two days spouting completely factually incorrect things that the "evil Tories" are now going to do!

ghostyslovesheep · 09/05/2015 15:46

blimey for a shit hot lawyer you seem confused - you can give your child any name you like

if not married you can't put dad on the BC without him there

no big deal really

eeniemeeniemineymo · 09/05/2015 15:47

I am starting to think that some people claim to be Labour to fit in with the status quo in their households, workplaces and socially. But in actual fact when they get into the polling stations they were too scared to vote for Labour.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 09/05/2015 15:47

Iwasborn definitely! I'm amazed by the amount of Labour supporters screaming that the Tories will cut benefits and brandishing about the £12billion welfare cuts suggested, when Labour were going to do the same thing!

putthekettleonwouldya · 09/05/2015 15:48

@gahhbuggerit - what does he do?

GahBuggerit · 09/05/2015 15:51

it will out me if i say and i blab enough on here as it is Grin

its not a great job, hes on shit money for what he does but it gets us by, just. if he is out of a job we lose our home, so i voted with my family in mind

LumpySpacedPrincess · 09/05/2015 15:53

Milliband wouldn't take time off work to go with his girlfriend to register the birth of his own child.

Justine seems like a very capable woman who managed to do this all by herself, as did I.

BigBirthdayGloom · 09/05/2015 15:53

I imagine lots of Tory voters are like I almost was. They looked at Ed Miliband and didn't see a statesman and they looked at Tory policies and realised that their little family would be better off and since times are tough they looked inward rather than outward. So actually, they felt pushed into a betrayal of their underlying principles and therefore didn't want to shout it out.

In the end, I decided that, although my labour vote wouldn't get me what I wanted here I would rather get lib dem or conservative whilst having voted with my principles.

bizmum1 · 09/05/2015 15:57

I voted Tory too and I've not be afraid to admit it. I'm a small business owner and I feel the Conservatives are the real party for working people.

BigBirthdayGloom · 09/05/2015 15:57

Not registering the birth together might have been a very sensible decision, allowing them more of the scant time they would have together resting at home rather than sitting waiting at a council office.

My dh didn't come to antenatal classes in the day with me, preferring to have time together after the birth. It so happened that registering the births was a nice way to have a little trip out together but it would hardly have been make or break for our family. My mil registered births alone in hospital (and once chose a different name for dh from the one they'd agreed on Shock). Dmil and dfil are still happily together. A digression. Back to why people might be shy about voting Tory!

NRomanoff · 09/05/2015 15:57

usual nope don't agree that all tory voters think every other tory voter is hard working.

Neither does my disabled mum, who also voted tory. I vote tory, it had nothing to do with my perception of how hard other people work, regardless of who they voted for.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 09/05/2015 15:57

Can't give your child your boyfriend's name if he's not there.

Then the children had her name presumably, you know, their mother. Whats the problem with this exactly?

BettyCatKitten · 09/05/2015 16:02

Lots of people in Housing Association homes (council homes don't exist anymore) voted conservative. The Tories are going give massive discounts to tenants, so we can buy our homes for a fraction of the market value.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 09/05/2015 16:07

Betty I get why you think that's a good idea and good luck to you but it's a really bad idea in the long run.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 09/05/2015 16:08

Council houses don't exist as the last bunch of tories sold them off.

PizzaLegs23 · 09/05/2015 16:09

Amybear is spot on. Unless you're a wealthy millionaire, you're a turkey voting for Christmas of you vote Tory. Ive a pal living in London who thinks cus she works and lives in London she is doing well (she is a working person so not doing well by London standards). She voted Tory. I'm going to ensure I'm there when she gets handed her first medical bill when the nhs has gone, her face will be a picture. Fool.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 09/05/2015 16:10

40% of ex council homes are now owned by private landlords

cleanmyhouse · 09/05/2015 16:12

Foodbanks
Bedroom tax
ATOS
Fighting to keep bankers bonuses
Rediculous expoitable tax system for wealthy people and big business
20% VAT
Scrapping human rights act
Right to buy social/housing association housing when there is none
tax on disability benefits
UN probe into grave violations of rights of disabled people.

I wouldn't fess up to agreeing to that.

BettyCatKitten · 09/05/2015 16:13

Lumpy I think it is a very bad idea and will not be taking the offer up.
I did not and never have voted conservative.
I posted to humour the opSmile
Imagine the outrage from right wing voters when threads start appearing about DC giving away houses at knock down prices. They will be apoplectic Grin

BettyCatKitten · 09/05/2015 16:17

And they voted for itGrin

FatherBiggley · 09/05/2015 16:18

Okay, so other threads are saying Tory voters don't care about the poor, ill, disabled etc and you're saying that's overdramatic.

So. Go on then. You care? How do you care? How do you show that care by voting Tory?

wonkylegs · 09/05/2015 16:24

OP I was not brought up on a council estate, I was lucky by accident of birth to be born into a solidly MC background. I am well educated, well read and like to form my own opinions... I understand some of the issues in quite some depth, I am skeptical about most politicians sound bites and question the reality behind promises/press cuttings.
I didn't vote Tory because their manifesto, record and MPs did not work for my values.
It is great that we live in a country where we have the right to vote for who we want to BUT
I am sad to see how many people still don't vote,
I am sad at how disappointing the choices we had in this election, none of the parties were particularly inspiring and there was a lot of least worst talk among voters
I sad how much media influence there is both in biased coverage, scaremongering (both sides), and in how many election promises were made with an eye to the media reaction (many of which all of them would/will break following the election)
I am sad how little trust many people have in government, I believe that both major parties are to blame for this.
I do believe that labour has many of the flaws of the conservatives but I believe their drivers for policy are better.
I do not believe there is any joy in the result in result of the election. I do believe there will be real pain for less gain (for the country) than we have been led to believe and I believe some of the scars of the next 5yrs, made in the name of austerity, will take a long time to heal.

BettyCatKitten · 09/05/2015 16:25

Op, I hope you are never in a position where you need any sort of support.

Justanotherlurker · 09/05/2015 16:25

I agree, it's a shame labour forgot to address this issue in their 13 years of power.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 09/05/2015 16:26

Good for you Betty

What I really cannot understand is the anger people have towards anyone less wealthy than they are but the complete lack of anger at the people who caused this mess and are still feathering their nests.
