It's all just sinking in, and the other political threads are too eloquent for what I want to express this morning.

Oh tits. This is rubbish.

Ugh, this thread is just reminding why I can't stand people who just can't answer a question.....

Thanks for the explanation Super I was totally unaware of that. I don't work in either healthcare or in a "relevant role".

We need to get things done in the next 5 years now the disadvantaged have a real chance because they have the Tories behind them which they would not have done under Labour. It will be good.

But how ?? Can you point to specific policies or manifesto pledges that will directly benefit those who are currently disadvantaged? Because saying it over and over without any evidence to back up your claims does not make it fact!

ThisFenceIsComfy · 12/05/2015 00:11

I know MrsFrumble I can't even see how beyond a small tax break, what long term policies the Tories have for helping anyone who works either.

Horsemadbird · 12/05/2015 07:52

The Labout party lost, in part, because they focussed almost entirely on the minorities at either end of the spectrum, not the vast majority in the middle.

Th eaverge working Brit ( who make up the vast majority of the population) are concerned with the economy, tax, bills, housing, immigration , education, a decent and efficient NHS.

They are not terribly interested in the mansion tax for just a few people and they are tired of those at the bottom enjoying a benefits lifestyle often denied those who work.

Until Labour accept this, they will never hold power again.

Well said horsemaidbird.

I think horsemaid is right about whee Labour focused their priorities but I don't think there are that many people enjoying a benefits lifestyle. I think the media likes us to believe that lots of people are living the life of Riley on benefits and they constantly convince people of this.
I found myself watching benefits street last night (because I was too bone idle and tired to get up and get the remote to turn over) and what struck me was that most of the people had been in work fairly recently or had been in and out of work over the previous few years. Many of them were on medication due to depression, including a man who had woken up to find his partner dead next to him in bed, he was still desperate to work though.
The only person who was long term unemployed was a lady who was caring for her 15 year old son who had complex needs and needed a lot of care. That lady probably worked harder than most people who go to work for 40 hours each week.
The programme was obviously set up to exploit those people and perpetuate the myth that large sectors of society are happy on benefits. I didn't see lots of people who were happy on benefits, I saw lots of people who were poor and depressed.
I think we need to see more about the reality of life on benefits, dealing with sanctions, being at the mercy of slum landlords, dealing with being seen as a scrounger, visiting food banks. The media should be made to make balanced reports and stop this sensationalism which leads people to believe that loads of people enjoy being on benefits. I have no doubt that a small minority of benefit claimants are quite happy on benefits but I do think they are very much the minority.
