I have a sicky feeling in the pit of my stomach that we are going to be lumbered with 5 more years of Tory rule. Please let it not be so.

They weren't dark at all, literally or metaphorically.

Communities fell apart during the Labour years, late 90s onwards.

I was a child in the early 90s, living close to a city center and our community was amazing.....we even played outside Shock. None of my extended family talk about the early 90s as bleak. My family definitely were not rich or had it especially easy, but it was not bleak

Can anyone make an educated guess as to where the 12 billion pounds worth of welfare cuts will come from? Are we talking complete abolition of tax credits? Will we know when the Autumn budget is revealed?

NRomanoff · 08/05/2015 20:08

I was a single parent with two very young dc's in the 1990's. My life was shit. I had to live off toast as I couldn't afford to eat properly. My lot improved greatly after 1997 with labour, I managed to study for a BA and improve my job chances drastically.

But thats not everyones experience. My mum was a single mum, my auntie had a son and had never been married. We all had fairly decent lives and Mum thinks they were her best years.

She is now disabled and very much dislikes labour

America, no. I tried looking it up on other websites, i guess you could download the tory manifesto, it might be on there? I have no idea really. I dont think they will say much till a few months down the line anyway. Let the dust settle first.

Seeingthebeautyineveryminute · 08/05/2015 20:25

America they haven't told us yet. It's not going to be pretty though.

Wasn't it 1990 when the interest rates went through the roof and there were loads of repossessions? I remember shed loads of people being made redundant in 1990/1991. I lived in London and knew lots of people employed in the construction industry, it was a terrible time.

America52 · 08/05/2015 20:50

Thanks seeing and The80's i'm assuming we will have a better idea of what's going on when the Autumn budget is announced. 12 billion seems like such a large amount that I can only imagine there will be a complete abolition of something, whether that be income support, WTC or CTC or CB. Perhaps i'm wrong and 12 billion is only a drop in the ocean wishful thinking

HelenaDove · 08/05/2015 20:58

humanjam My dad was in construction and was made redundant in early 92. I was 18 and he came home early from work and nearly caught me and DH up in my room We had just started dating then.

My dad had been a site foreman since the late 50s - early 60s.

Of course I know that's not everyone's experience, but it was certainly mine.

queensansastark · 09/05/2015 15:17

Early 90s , I remember being a fresh graduate trying to find a job in the middle of a recession and thinking that the concept of the "milk round" for graduates doesn't really exist anymore ...I was lucky I landed a good graduated job though, if I hadn't it would gave been back to the spare room with my family....

When I look back I think the 90s and up to 9/11/2001 were the golden years I really do.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/05/2015 16:35

Did you have a student loan, queen? Not sure when they came in, I know I just missed them.

queensansastark · 09/05/2015 17:10

No student loan. Still left with £3k debt with Lloyds Bank though.
