I have a sicky feeling in the pit of my stomach that we are going to be lumbered with 5 more years of Tory rule. Please let it not be so.

But the fit and able who choose not to work when there are available jobs are not the majority. The majority of people on benefits are on them out of no choice of their own. These people need help not kicking whilst their down because of a minority of people use benefits to live on.

Prole · 08/05/2015 06:31

Fine by me! Let's make it the 1770s!

You must be appalled by all us plebs even having a vote. I take it you voted for the ghost of Lord North... traditional values and all that.

shewept · 08/05/2015 06:34

They've still got over 100 seats to count so I'm not sure what will happen if Labour beats torys in these 100 as everyone is saying he'll be PM again.

The exit polls have proved far more accurate than the preelection polls.

Based on the seats that have been announced and the exit poll its entirely unlikely that Labour will not win the 100 seats. Even Ed doesn't believe that will happen. It technically could, but unlikely

mrsdavidbowie · 08/05/2015 06:34

cherrybakewell so why don't they vote?

Hakluyt · 08/05/2015 06:35

"I have a friend who has not worked for years; recently she was offered a job in a supermarket but didn't want to take it as she would lose her benefits. She resents the Conservative government because there is a continuous pressure on her to work."

Yeah, sure. Course you do. Course she does.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/05/2015 06:36

The ONLY good news to come out of all of this is that so far, UKIP only have one seat. That's it. The rest of it is depressing as fuck.

Cherrybakewell33 · 08/05/2015 06:36

I have no idea why they don't vote. I wish I did!

BigSpottyCupofTea · 08/05/2015 06:36

Agree with cherry.

VivaLeBeaver · 08/05/2015 06:37

Well Rupert Murdoch ran the best campaign out of all of them didn't he?

Prole · 08/05/2015 06:38

An ITV journo reported that Farage was looking like third place in the Thanet count. That declaration isn't for another 3 hours or so. Not sure I can last 'til then.

Since Nige has already promised to resign as leader if the doesn't win the seat, does that make Carswell leader of a party of one?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/05/2015 06:38

Why do people think being on benefits is so easy? It's not nice having what you rely chop and changed at the whim of someone else.

I'm struggling to keep me and my DD above the water. Just waiting for someone to come to hold my head under.

Oh, I've sent out 70 CV's last month. If there are no jobs for people. What else can we do to better our position?

skinnyabc · 08/05/2015 06:38

Well said cherry

Cherrybakewell33 · 08/05/2015 06:38

Though I am suprised Clegg has kept his seat after the tuition fee fiasco.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/05/2015 06:38

Cherry - a lot of it is disillusionment with all of them, not thinking any of them are worth backing, deciding that their vote "doesn't count because X will always get in anyway", can't get to the polling station for whatever reason; and a large proportion who "don't understand politics, giggle giggle, it's all just so boring" (I used to know a fair few like this Angry)

fixedit · 08/05/2015 06:39

Ive completely lost my faith in the country.

fiveacres · 08/05/2015 06:40

"maybe it would be better if government was chosen by the wise people on this thread."

One observation I have noted over the last few weeks is that those who vote Labour or other left leaning parties are very vocal about their intention to do so.

I wonder why that is. Clearly, they believe they are correct and justified in their thinking, but, I imagine, those of us who voted Conservative also do. If the government were to be selected purely on the basis of "the wise people who posted on this thread" - that is another way of saying "only those who agree with me should be able to vote." Interestingly, at a time where comparisons with extremist parties are rife, I presumably don't need to point out that's the most extremist view of them all - to do away with democracy.

"It was light hearted" will no doubt be the protest: well, maybe, but I can't imagine any other "light hearted" extremist view going down so well. Can you?

I would have been, and am, content enough for either a Labour or Conservative government, though I voted for the latter due to an excellent local MP. My ambivalence has made me objective perhaps and what I am lying awake pondering is why the Conservatives have won? What, in effect, are the country 'saying'? Do not be so patronising as to assume everyone has been swayed by anti-benefits propaganda. I doubt very much this is about benefits; it is another message. What is that?

FujimotosElixir · 08/05/2015 06:40

Its classism plain and simple and I view it on the same plain , as racism and sexism ! ....Jeremy pax!man put it v. Well when Cameron came into power there were 62 food banks now there's 422 ! Says it all really. When my severely disabled sister needs permenant residential care there will be nothing, and absolutely nothing and my parents have paid into the fucking systems for years, wheres the pay off for my " hard working" family eh? Angry....going to go and sit on my hands now...

CrispyFern · 08/05/2015 06:41

Five more years. For fuck's sake.
So genuinely depressed.

GoldfishSpy · 08/05/2015 06:42

This is seriously depressing.

We are relatively well off, but the cuts to the fabulous state school where I work have been savage, particularly for students with additional needs. The support services around them (health, mental health, OT etc) have been cut or withdrawn. There are few jobs locally.

I cannot believe the Tories have managed to persuade so many the vote to keep them in Dom Perignon for another 5 years while families who work cannot afford school shoes for their children.

Cherrybakewell33 · 08/05/2015 06:43

thumb I agree that's probably why they don't vote. I was called sad yesterday by my brother in law for voting! it doesn't affect him apparently...

LumpySpacedPrincess · 08/05/2015 06:44

To be honest with most of the press owned by the right Ed didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell.

The80sweregreat · 08/05/2015 06:45

Fuji, folk, like your sister and family are going to be screwed over again. Its so unfair and sad.

mrsdavidbowie · 08/05/2015 06:45

There is no excuse for not getting to a polling station. That's why there are postal votes.

GoldfishSpy · 08/05/2015 06:46

Perhaps fiveacres they are ashamed and that is why they do not talk about it.

Hakluyt · 08/05/2015 06:46

The DWP estimates that £1.2b worth of benefit was fraudulently claimed in benefit last year. However that needs to be set against the £1.5b of unclImed benefit- That is, money that people are entitled to, but don't claim.

And that pales into insignificance compared to the £34b. "tax gap"- that is money lost by people not paying the taxes they should.

So. £1.2b in benefit fraud. £34b in tax fraud. Interesting which is the headline, isn't it?
