I have a sicky feeling in the pit of my stomach that we are going to be lumbered with 5 more years of Tory rule. Please let it not be so.

We were really thinking of leaving too. For the opposite reasons to you. Bloated welfare state, people choosing benefits as opposed to getting a job. State intervention everywhere if Labour got in. They will never win a majority ever now. They drastically under estimated mass immigration in some towns.

Hillingdon · 08/05/2015 06:04

It's good news!

Cherrybakewell33 · 08/05/2015 06:09

But surely the people choosing to live on a benefits are in the minority despite what the tories try and make us think?

The lack of jobs in our town means that an overwhelming amount of people apply for a tiny amount of jobs. Most of these people aren't choosing this.

Agreed though that they will never win a majority now. Dont think labour are perfect by a long stretch but don't think attacking the poorest is the way to go.

Prole · 08/05/2015 06:09

Hillingdon - if you're opposed to state intervention, how do feel about, say, Working Tax Credits as a subsidy to private business or Northern Rock sold to Virgin with an effective state-funded discount of £400m? The vast subsidies paid to private rail companies (more than BR ever got). I assume you were completely against any bank bailouts.

The80sweregreat · 08/05/2015 06:12

Its a disaster for the labour party, but Clegg, well, who wants to be him right now? The price of coalition.

Treeceratops · 08/05/2015 06:12

I feel like crying. On a local note, it is also very depressing that UKIP got more seats than Labour in my (very safe) Conservative constituency. Think I'll avoid the news for the rest of the day.

Mrsstarlord · 08/05/2015 06:12

I'm genuinely afraid for the future of the country under conservatives for another 5 years. Increasing gaps between the rich and poor, NHS being sold off through dodgy deals, education being forced to churn out non thinking clones who don't rock the boat and throwing the rest on the scrap heap. The fact is that the variations on the left are now so broad that people dilute their votes across a number of parties, the right only have one more acceptable choice so the vote is funnelled to them. The fact that they're in government doesn't mean that the majority agree with them. I'm not making sense but because it just blows my mind.

ThePowerAndTheGlory · 08/05/2015 06:15

Fantastic news! Back-to-the-70s socialism has been buried at last.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 08/05/2015 06:16

Our long-standing well-liked MP has lost his seat to a Tory who was hired to run here. What the fuck has happened??? So angry right now.

shewept · 08/05/2015 06:17

I can't believe the tories might win a majority, I didn't think they will get anywhere near.

But rather than assume the conservative voters are just selfish, wankers, bastards. I am interested in why labour are doing so badly the last election was quite close. I think the Labour party needs to really look at itself.

I, personally, think labour lost at the Leeds debate. I watched Ed and Nick (I missed Dave) and I think I saw the moment he lost a lot of voters.

Cherrybakewell33 · 08/05/2015 06:18

I know its been mentioned before but elections aren't representative of what the country want but what people who vote want. And the fact the rich, elderly and middle class are more likely to vote than those who are in a less fortunate socio-economic position.

I live in a 'deprived' town and the polling stations were empty

BigSpottyCupofTea · 08/05/2015 06:20

Agree with you mrsstarlord. I am genuinely bewildered. Honestly afraid for the weaker/poorer, the disabled, those who are ill anyone who's had any misfortune and we as a society under this leadership say screw you, you have to bear that misfortune alone. Not the kind of society I want to live in or I want for my kids. I try to teach them to be kind, to consider others and for what? This??!!

FujimotosElixir · 08/05/2015 06:21

Just woke up, I was really hoping labour who get a good result but it seems not, surely can't want more years of David Cameron? , depressing isn't the word.

Prole · 08/05/2015 06:22

Fantastic news! Back-to-the-70s socialism has been buried at last.

But back-to-the-1870s Toryism is back.

100sanemum · 08/05/2015 06:22

Saga- your well-liked MP has gone? Do you need the obvious pointing out?!

ThePowerAndTheGlory · 08/05/2015 06:24

But back-to-the-1870s Toryism is back.

Fine by me! Let's make it the 1770s!

Cherrybakewell33 · 08/05/2015 06:26

It's the daily fail mentality that all people on benefits are scroungers with their luxury holidays, expensive phones, nice houses, cars etc Hmm. Ignore the fact that the job situation is dire, ignoring the fact that most benefits are paid out to people who do work just are paid such a shit wage that they are unable to live on that alone.

The worst thing is the person who is implementing all these cuts on the poorest has zero idea what it is like to be vulnerable, to suffer hardship as he was born with a silver spoon.

Julius02 · 08/05/2015 06:26

The people who are penalising the Sick and disabled are not the Tory voters - it is the fit and able who choose not to work because they are better off on benefits. I have a friend who has not worked for years; recently she was offered a job in a supermarket but didn't want to take it as she would lose her benefits. She resents the Conservative government because there is a continuous pressure on her to work.

Without a strong economy there is no money to support those who need it such as the sick and disabled. There is no bottomless pit of cash. I work hard, pay my taxes, am fortunate that I have not, so far, needed state help and I want my tax to support everyone in society who really needs it.

To say I do not care is simply not true.

Stickledpink · 08/05/2015 06:27

Yay!! Excellent news :)

Cheerio Ed ..... :)

Don't forget to close the door on your way out

FujimotosElixir · 08/05/2015 06:27

Well child poverty is the highest it's been in 30 years so I can only imagine how much worse its going to get in 5 years! Did no one learn anything from the 80s!

100sanemum · 08/05/2015 06:27

Cherrybakewell makes another fantastic observation on democracy- elections aren't representative of what people want. Maybe it would be better if government was chosen by the wise people on this thread.

fixedit · 08/05/2015 06:29

They've still got over 100 seats to count so I'm not sure what will happen if Labour beats torys in these 100 as everyone is saying he'll be PM again.

Hakluyt · 08/05/2015 06:29

The only thing that'll make it worse is Farage getting in. Which he probably will.

FujimotosElixir · 08/05/2015 06:29

The poorest people in this country are people who work often, they go out and earn their poverty why do people like that not get more help?

Stickledpink · 08/05/2015 06:30

100sanemum...... Take a look at the election map on the BBC.

Of course it's what the people want....and it certainly isn't Ed and Ed and Labour.
