To think changing your tampon in a gym change room is a bit foul?

I was at the gym earlier today, getting changed after my shower in the change room while chatting to a friend. A woman came out of the showers wrapped in her towel. Before my friend and I knew what was happening, she had whipped out her tampon and put it in the bin!

Someone actually did that??? Thats crazy! Why would you not use a toilet! !!

Hiphopopotamus · 06/05/2015 00:04

Adding my name for a PM please!

BigRedBall · 06/05/2015 00:15

How is blood not dirty? How do you know this woman didn't have HIV or Hepatitis?
Who knows what kinds of new viruses are living in your blood stream that we haven't even discovered?
Blood products should be disposed of safely. Tampons should be wrapped and thrown in a designated bin in public places so that the poor people who change the bins know exactly what they're dealing with.

I would have reported her.

Bogeyface · 06/05/2015 00:28

Well of course no one does but equally, how do you know that the child that skinned his knee at your childs birthday party doesnt have them either? Would you say "I cant deal with this! The tissues we used on his knee need to be disposed of safely in a designated bin!"? Or would you mop him up, give him a plaster and chuck the tissues in the bin?

I do think that its because its menstrual blood that we have been conditioned to think of as dirty rather than because it could genuinely be carrying something nasty. Catching HIV and Hepatitis from a used tampon would involve someone doing far worse with that tampon than tossing said tampon in the bin.

pamish · 06/05/2015 00:28

Not seen a tampon yet, but I hate seeing all the bits n pieces left on the gym showers + changing room floors. Paper strips, razors, and worst of all - great clumps of hair. What do they think happens to it? Poor cleaners, but they only come round at the end of the day so we have to splash between it in bare feet. What is wrong with picking up your crap and dropping it in the very nearby bin???? Somehow it's much worse than litter on the street.

snowglobemouse · 06/05/2015 00:45

agree with bogey. periods are seen as 'dirty'. and they shouldn't be

KenAdams · 06/05/2015 00:50

Ooh Dame, can you pm me please?

fulltothebrim · 06/05/2015 06:41

alwayshungry100- you think it's OK to drip blood aroud a public area?
Blood can harbour disease, Hep C, HIV.

Within the confines if an intimate relationship then blood certainly not dirty- but not something to be shared in public.

Mrsstarlord · 06/05/2015 06:49

Nothing to do with periods or blood but that level of intimate personal care is not for public viewing IMO.
Can I have a pm now please? I also think HBCSmile

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 06/05/2015 07:00

Well I wouldn't be disgusted as such. But I'd definitely be very surprised. Even if I wanted to do it though, I couldn't, because it would be like the scene from Carrie. I pretty much need to do a thorough sweep of the toilet and clean the place, as I bleed so heavily that it gets everywhere! Hmm

I'd also like a pm please from dame or anyone else who's had one and is about. Thx.

Cornettoninja · 06/05/2015 07:12

Period blood is bodily waste. Nothing to be ashamed of, but equally not the sort of thing you deal with publicly. I don't want someone spitting or picking their nose next to me either. Come to think of it there's nothing strictly speaking, unhygienic about shaving your bikini line in the middleof a changing room, it is however potentially messy even if you're careful and not pleasant for others to cop an eye full of.

There's just no need.

I would also appreciate a pm of anyone in the know Grin love a bit of celeb gossip!

Cornonthecob · 06/05/2015 07:14

Urgh, I've witnessed the same!!

BigRedBall · 06/05/2015 07:18

No I haven't been conditioned to believe periods are dirty! It's the blood of a stranger that is dirty, as are other bodily fluids like snot, spit, vomit, poo and wee.

Your notion about people being conditioned into calling period blood dirty is strange. We're encouraged to use condoms when having sex with strangers. We're encouraged to wash our hands after a trip to the loo. We're encouraged to cover our mouths when sneezing in public. Should we start flinging our period blood around in public to make a feminist point? This has nothing to do with the blood being period blood. It's the fact it was blood and it was disposed off in a normal bin rather than a sanitary bin infront of an audience.

fulltothebrim · 06/05/2015 07:32

Can I have a pm too please?

Seffina · 06/05/2015 07:33

I think that the social conditioning against periods came first, and then our sqeamishness over blood has come later. It can only be in recent history that we understand blood borne diseases.

NurseRoscoe · 06/05/2015 07:36

That's foul. What's wrong with the toilet?!
