To not fill the form out for DD to have her own library card? (trivial)

DD (6yo, yr1) is going to the library with her class in a week, we've been sent home a form for them to have their own library card and been asked to fill it out and send it back in time for the trip.

I dont want to fill it out. I dont see the point in a 6yo having their own library card.

I have a library card, as does DH, we can take out up to 16 books on them at a time, the chances of DD ever visiting the library without me or DH are Zero.

AIBU to sent the permission slip back with the words "she doesn't need her own card, both me and her dad have one" on the card application?

I've got my DC their own library cards from when they were tiny. They love taking out THEIR books on THEIR cards and I think it is a great habit for them to get in to.

CaptainAnkles · 30/04/2015 22:52

Thing is, even if she never uses it, maybe she'd feel quite proud to have her very own library card, especially since everyone else in her class will be getting one. She might like borrowing books on her own card next time you take her. Why wouldn't you want her to have one?

OMGBabyNo3 · 30/04/2015 22:52

Well the chances of her ever visiting without you or DH aren't zero if she's going with her class next week are they?

My DD has had her own library card since she was 10 days old. She is now 10 years old and regularly visits the library by herself. Your DD will not be 6 forever. Why deny her the pleasure of her own card?

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 30/04/2015 22:54

"DD (6yo, yr1) is going to the library with her class in a week"

"the chances of DD ever visiting the library without me or DH are Zero."

Are you going with the class too?

maroonedwithfour · 30/04/2015 22:54

You wont get fined on child card. Also its so they can take outbooks through school library.

MetellaEstMater · 30/04/2015 22:54

If she's going with her class then you won't be there Confused

Both of my DCs have library cards and enjoy taking their books out, especially when with their school on trips.

Tinuviel · 30/04/2015 22:54

My DCs all have a library card because there are no fines for late returns on children's whereas fines for adults are quite hefty. So they have had cards since they were tiny and the library staff used to let them date stamp their books when they took them out!

WalterWall · 30/04/2015 22:54

At our library any children's books taken out on a children's card are exempt for overdue fees, but not if taken out on an adults card.

In our local library children don't get fined if their books are back late, so you and DH might actually want to consider getting books out on her card!

momtothree · 30/04/2015 22:54

If the books are late they charge on an adult card - no late fee on a kids card.

LowryFan · 30/04/2015 22:54

My DC had their own cards from v small, round here you can't fine a child but you can an adult. Much cheaper for a forgetful person like me!!

Gargamella · 30/04/2015 22:54

Agree with your take on this re book borrowing. However, sometime there are fringe benefits. In our town, kids show their library cards to get free swimming in the school holidays.

MothershipG · 30/04/2015 22:56

In the libraries of the borough I work in you pay lower fines on children's cards, in the borough we live in you don't pay fines at all on children's cards, a definite advantage to the less organised.

OldBeanbagz · 30/04/2015 22:57

My DC have had their own cards since they were very little. They loved checking out books themselves, it made them feel important.

Plus the fines are smaller wehn you go on holiday and forget to take the library books back!

ICantFindAFreeNickName · 30/04/2015 22:57

I think children can also reserve books for free. Plus I think they need their own card to take part in the summer reading scheme.

ASorcererIsAWizardSquared · 30/04/2015 22:57

yes i am going, lol, i'm one of the school volunteers :)

i never take books back late, ever.

I think there are more things to worry about in life. You could have filled it out in the time you wrote this post. Agree with the others, no fines and she might like it.

Peepants78 · 30/04/2015 22:59

Around here it can be used for a reading scheme within the library. Children can earn certificates/medals/prizes over the course of the summer holiday.

ShatnersBassoon · 30/04/2015 23:00

It's such a small thing to do, I couldn't be arsed to object. What harm could possibly come from her having a library card?

UnsolvedMystery · 30/04/2015 23:01

It's lovely for them to have their own card. I can't understand why you would have any objection to it.

VirginiaTonic · 30/04/2015 23:02

Why not?

glorious · 30/04/2015 23:03

No fines on children's cards either. Ok so I try not to take them back late anyway but it's a nice safety net!
