to think 'omg there's something WRONG with her FACE' when I see so many American actresses

Especially older ones. Their mouths don't move properly! It always looks like they're trying to hold in a mouthful of marbles. I think it's all the Botox and it gives me the creeps.

I find it really unfair that male actors are allowed to have foreheads and lips that actually MOVE while the moment women hit 28 or so they're supposed to become increasingly mannequin-like. Often too you see these frozen old-lady-dolls playing great characters and their weird, weird faces just makes me dislike them no matter what. AIBU to be creeped out by it? Should I just accept that this is the way the world is now?

One of the scariest is Melanie Griffiths.

I know she must find it weird playing a grandmother in Hawaii Five 0, but it would be good if she actually looked like one.

Horrible.

Melanie Griffiths is a cautionary tale.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/04/2015 16:19

Sansaraya - Helen Mirren had a face lift a while back, well documented in the press iirc.

areyoubeingserviced · 30/04/2015 16:25

What I find shocking is that people are getting botox/plastic surgery in their twenties. Some of the Towie girls look much older because of the use of Botox, which defeats the object

stormyboots · 30/04/2015 17:05

I always think people who have had work done don't necessarily look their age but they don't look young either. Olivia Newton John was on a show a while back and while she didn't look sixty odd she didn't look young either just odd.

Feel a bit sorry for women in the public eye, because no one likes ageing but ageing publicly with commentary must be awful. Must be far worse if you are beautiful and famous for that beauty. Brigitte Bardot had the right idea, knowing she couldn't prevent the loss of her looks so she just gave in to it. Less stress in the long wrong I imagine and less chance of becoming a caricature of yourself.

Theycallmemellowjello · 30/04/2015 17:19

I think yabu. Criticisms like the ones in the op and other posts are part of the culture that says that women's looks are fair game for public evaluation. You are part of the problem. Just let people get on with their own lives and you live yours. I've had botox. I like how it looks. I don't care what you think of me and I don't need your fake sympathy about how 'sad' it is that I'm not aging how I 'ought to'.

RambleOn · 30/04/2015 17:24

Joan Collins may not have had surgery, but she gives herself an instant facelift by tying her hair back very tightly, hence the wigs.

Aurochs · 30/04/2015 17:31

Hmm jello but this thread discusses men and women, and it's really about what happens when people start to look a bit non-human and the effects that has. No one is saying ban botox, they're saying if you go OTT with this stuff you start to look alarming. And it's a shame that many people who could have looked lovely (if old) in later years now look non-human instead. And the reasons for that are that ageing is seen as so terrifying and unacceptable, and that is what "ought" not to be the case.

Everyone can make their own free choices, but by the same token other people are free to say they sometimes find the resulting look startling.

Fiderer · 30/04/2015 17:31

I found a Joan Collins "beauty book" at my mum's last time I visited. Read it in the bath. JC reckoned Vaseline was the best face moisturiser Hmm If I tried that I'd stink and stick to walls and doors I reckon.

Also re-read a Georgette Heyer book while there. There was a woman using arsenic to give her a "clear complexion". Complexion is a word we don't seem to use any more - but anyway, arsenic? Shock

Theycallmemellowjello · 30/04/2015 17:36

There are a very few comments about men on here. The op and the majority of posts are about men. And I don't take the view that as soon as someone makes an alteration to their appearance it makes them fair game for discussion: you lose weight - fine for people to discuss your figure? You wear make up - fine for people to discuss how hot or not you are? No? So why does having a face lift or whatever make you fair game??

noddyholder · 30/04/2015 17:36

Botox is amazing when you first have it and with a good subtle touch its very addictive but after a few years the effect is the same but the rest of your face isn't! I know several friends who have been having it 5 ish years and have all now stopped as their brows were becoming heavy and masculine looking and they no longer liked the effect. I had it once a year for 3 years and it was great but haven't had it this year as I can see the long term look is more ageing!

squoosh · 30/04/2015 17:43

I don't see the problem with women discussing female celebrities who have had extreme plastic surgery, they're the ones promoting the idea that not ageing (or attempting not to age) is the ideal.

likalixer · 30/04/2015 17:44

They go overboard with the cheek fillers.
Plump cheeks on a 20 something? Looks natural, but if a slim person over the age of 40 has plump cheeks then you know she's had too many fillers and it doesn't look natural.

I was watching This Morning and I think Joanna Lumley has got the balance just right. She looks her age, but it's a 'good for her age' look. She may well have had some work done, who knows, but she hasn't gone overboard and her face still has still kept some shape and definition.

This is why the fillers don't look right on Jennifer A and Courtney Cox (or Kylie), they all have small builds, so the big faced look doesn't suit them.

Inkanta · 30/04/2015 17:46

It was a shame to see Meg Ryan's face change. She had a lovely face and mouth.

Behooven · 30/04/2015 17:46

Some people suspect Barry Manilow of having a bit of work. Can't see it meself.

Another woman who looks very good for her age. She must have beautiful bone structure.
Even though I think she wears a LOT of makeup, she hasn't drastically altered the shape of her face, which is the mistake a lot of American actresses make.

SoldierBear · 30/04/2015 17:50

I'm struck by how lovely Jenny Agutter looks in CTW. Minimal makeup, wimple etc which is rather unforgiving but she is still beautiful. She looks like a woman who has lived her life happily, not someone who is trapping herself in the past

noddyholder · 30/04/2015 17:53

Sharon Stone looks amazing

Inkanta · 30/04/2015 17:53

Yes I think that's the key to successful beauty in maturer years, when you don't change the shape or size of your face as Joan has managed to do. It looks exactly the same shape.

likalixer · 30/04/2015 17:54

Sharon Osborne seems to be going about things (botox/fillers/surgery who knows)in the right way. Okay, it does seem a bit strange the way every time you see her on tv she gets younger and younger and younger! (It's like she has her own personal time machine.)
But, for all that - she doesn't look odd. Her face still looks balanced and in proportion.

As somebody said, some must have really good surgeons and others are crap.

squoosh · 30/04/2015 17:54

Jenny Agutter does look great, and the amount of men who still have as major a crush on her now as they did when they were teenagers and she was in An American Werewolf is huge.

likalixer · 30/04/2015 17:57

Soldier,
Jenny Agutter is beautiful in a natural way. I wish we saw more who were brave enough like her to not bow down to pressure.

It's sad that so many resort to having procedures done, but I expect women in the media are under HUGE pressure. So you can't blame the ones that do decide to have things done.

SwedishEdith · 30/04/2015 18:01

Sharon Osborne had it about right (within that showbiz world, I mean) but passed that tipping point about 3 years ago.

I'm starting to see this in RL as well. Awful.

stormyboots · 30/04/2015 18:07

I agree I now think Sharon Osborne looks very strange.

Renew Zellweger sp? Is another actress who took it too far.

noddyholder · 30/04/2015 18:08

I think Joan Collins looks scary
