to think 'omg there's something WRONG with her FACE' when I see so many American actresses

Especially older ones. Their mouths don't move properly! It always looks like they're trying to hold in a mouthful of marbles. I think it's all the Botox and it gives me the creeps.

I find it really unfair that male actors are allowed to have foreheads and lips that actually MOVE while the moment women hit 28 or so they're supposed to become increasingly mannequin-like. Often too you see these frozen old-lady-dolls playing great characters and their weird, weird faces just makes me dislike them no matter what. AIBU to be creeped out by it? Should I just accept that this is the way the world is now?

It probably looks ok the first couple of times they get it done but a lot of them end up looking very strange indeed. There's a lot to be said for growing old gracefully.

OTheHugeManatee · 30/04/2015 11:42

I think what gets me about it is what the robotics industry calls the 'uncanny valley'. The theory is that something that sort of resembles a human can be cute or empathic, but something that nearly resembles a human but just slightly misses gives you the deep and unshakeable creeps.

I do wonder if even slebs like Helen Mirren have had work done. We are so accustomed to actresses who look “done” that perhaps we don’t notice those who’ve been more subtle.

Roussette · 30/04/2015 11:43

The best test is to look at neck and hands. I think it's Madonna's hands that look awful and don't match her face.

It's Meg Ryan that gets me. I think she would have aged into a beautiful older woman if she had allowed herself. She is 53. Looks older because of the work. She is not ageless - she is a beautiful woman who has had so much work done, she looks older than she is.

Mrsjayy · 30/04/2015 11:44

I wasnt having a go about liza honestly and there is no doubt the work goes to far

HellKitty · 30/04/2015 11:44

Obviously waxed eyebrows on men scare the crap out of me.

TwartFaceBeetj · 30/04/2015 11:46

I do agree it's bizarre, and wish they didn't feel the need for it.
But it is not a new phenomenon.
Long long before face-lifts and botox.

Wealthy women throughout history have injected their faces with all sorts.
Wax was very popular, it would be molded in to shape. But it went wrong a lot, moving around when it shouldn't, poisoning and melting if they sat to close to a fire etc

Aurochs · 30/04/2015 11:49

It's got to the point where you just never see a lovely looking older woman who looks, y'know, older.

But you do, like Judi Dench as everyone says. And Helen Mirren. And Vivienne Westwood. And even some Americans – Susan Sarandon. Jamie Lee Curtis

I do think it's depressing when a lot of women change their faces to the same, unified and uncanny valley look BUT it's doing people who don't do it a disservice to say you "never see them". We do see them and we should celebrate it.

Duckdeamon · 30/04/2015 11:50

sexism in the film, music, TV and media industries, depressing. eg few parts for women, older male actors paired with much younger women as romantic interests, so many programmes and films not passing the Bechdel test.

Roussette · 30/04/2015 11:51

There. Does that match her totally smooth unlined botoxed face? Nope.

It's all got ridiculous. Hopefully the tide will turn one day.

Of course you can't be sure even these women haven't had something done but the point is they look beautiful, confident and they look their age, and that is what I like about them – as a role model for me in the future, I like to see a woman who looks like she's in her 50s, 60s or 70s and is doing that in a confident, beautiful way. Because I don't want to have botox and fillers and I appreciate a woman who shows me you can step out of the door being happy and confident and stylish in your older skin instead.

bigkidsdidit · 30/04/2015 11:53

Stockard Channing looks completely bizarre in the Good wife now. I can't take my eyes off her. She almost doesn't look human.

Roussette · 30/04/2015 11:53

Well said Aurochs. Totally agree. I like to see a few wrinkles and an inner confidence. I'm old and wrinkly and proud of it!

JuneFromBethesda · 30/04/2015 12:07

Mind you, I'm similarly fascinated/horrified by young women who pile on all the slap these days - the TOWIE look, all fake tan and those god-awful thick black eyebrows. I had my hair done last week by a woman who I guess was late 20s but nothing about her was remotely natural - dyed jet black hair extensions, orange skin, huge spidery lashes, thunderous eyebrows. I kept looking at her and wondering what she actually looked like under all that.

I don't doubt for a second she was looking at me - pale-skinned, one feeble coat of mascara - and wondering why I didn't make more of an effort Grin

Mrsjayy · 30/04/2015 12:17

Women put wax in their face !

Mrsjayy · 30/04/2015 12:20

My friends dd is training to be a beautician she has EVERYTHING going on tan big hair big eyebrows lots of make up she even did that lip suction thing to give herself a pout

squoosh · 30/04/2015 12:22

Helen Mirren has had lots done!

squoosh · 30/04/2015 12:26

If you live in Beverly Hills or work in Hollywood the plastic surgery look is the default and looks normal. When it's transplanted via TV into our sitting rooms it looks really bizarre.

Burt Reynolds facelift is a sight to behold.

Mrsjayy · 30/04/2015 12:27

She may have but she doesnt look weird anywork is subtle and her face moves

Mrsjayy · 30/04/2015 12:29

Just googled Burt his face is very urm tight

squoosh · 30/04/2015 12:30

His eyes have almost disappeared! Silly man.

squoosh · 30/04/2015 12:31

And yes, Sylvester Stallone's face is very 'interesting' these days. He looks like a Ken doll that's been left on a radiator.

Aurochs · 30/04/2015 12:33

Yes Helen Mirren looks like an older woman who likes to look glam yet is not afraid to appear 70-ish
here

I think the really uncanny weirdness happens when a person cannot bear to have a wrinkle or any sign of age so they do whatever it takes to erase that. That leads to looking either weirdly taut or weirdly plumped-up because something has to be done with the naturally saggy or wrinkly skin.

HellKitty · 30/04/2015 12:33

Sylvester Stallone is the spit of his mother now! And what about Mickey Rouke? Serious crush on him in the 80s, now, not so much Shock

Mrsjayy · 30/04/2015 12:35

Tbf he wasnt much of a looker to start with melted ken fits him well. I watch botched sometimes and i cant believe what these people do to themselves q
