Why does Mumsnet now have a Scotsnet section?

I've just noticed that Scotnset now has it's very own section (came up in Active) this was news to me! Is it recent?
Isn't it encouraging segregation? Confused
How about we also have these sections:

Irishnet, Welshnet, Englishnet, and so on?

What everyone else has said

Just another few examples.

Being worried because your Feb born DC will be the youngest in the year group despite posters assuring you that July born DC are much more disadvantaged. Wink

Nat 4, Nat 5 and the new CfE here. No GCSEs, AS Levels, A levels, A* passes, triple science, English Lit etc etc etc

No such thing as OFSTED

No property market chains or gazumping

No school applications or wait for allocations

Completely different laws and rules

NHS vastly different

4 year uni degrees

No such thing as sixth form college or middle school, or free schools or technical colleges.

And despite being Scottish and never having lived in England, I know about all these English systems because they are all over the boards all of the time. Hence the need for somewhere to ask Scottish type questions. We're small numbers in a geographically large country so local boards are not well used as we're all a bit spread out. Think of us in population as being similar to a large region of the UK e.g. London - and it might make a bit more sense.

Nowt to do with a need for independence or a wish to segregate or Nicola and her supporters taking over the world (another no voter here).

The existence of ScotsNet does not preclude a WelshNet, NIrishNet, SIrishNet OzNet or whatever other 'Nets people can convince MNHQ there is a need for. None of these will diminish ScotsNet or vice versa.

Do what we did it: make a case, get a 'Net. The thread was linked to in an earlier post, so you now have a template.

See, don't say we're not good to you!

LaLaLaaaa · 27/04/2015 03:25

Because we asked for it and MNHQ said yes?

No conspiracy, that was it.

I don't see why scotsnet is needed.

I am guessing that's because you live in England. As countless posters have documented, Scotland has separate legal, educational and health systems. But you see countless posts prattling on about 'British law' and the 'British education system' when they mean English.

A previous poster suggested 'why not put I'm in Scotland'

a) It doesn't stop posters offering advice based on their experience knowledge of the English system
b) It is extremely difficult explain how and why the Scottish legal/education system is different to someone who has no knowledge of it let alone offer meaningful advice.
c) Why should we? English-based posters never or very rarely specify where they are based when starting threads of this type, they just assume everyone will know (as if by magic) that they are based in England.

The assumed Englishness is very annoying. It feels like Mumsnet is 'Englishnet' by default.

Think I'm being ovetly precious? Try this for an experiment: write a legal or education based AIBU and don't specify where in the UK you are based. Odds are most people will answer as if the poster is based in England nor will they even stop to ask 'whereabouts in the UK do you live?' before proffering their advice..

I had no idea a Scotsnet was planned but I will read with interest if only to update myself on the education system. Left Glasgow 15 years ago, I have Revised Higher (remember them?), went to school at 5, left for uni at 17, still can't translate "year x" into an actual age (year 7 is first year, am I right?) learned enough about the English primary admissions process while living in London for it to have been a major factor in our decision to move to Germany before the kids were old enough to start school... now all my knowledge is either out of date or for the wrong country or both!

This sounds very much like the OP wanted to stir up a bit of bad feeling but it didn't quite go according to plan to be honest. It's just another section of mumsnet. Big deal.

SwedeDreams · 27/04/2015 07:13

Oh, I want a LondonNet.

And sexnet. We can filter all the twats in there and then hide it.

likalixer · 27/04/2015 08:09

No trying to stir up any bad feeling Wilbur!

Like some others, I had no idea it existed til yesterday. It was only when it came up in 'active' that I noticed it (I don't look at Site Stuff much so must have missed all the campaigning} and then commented on it.
People have explained. I now see a reason for it.
No biggie.
