Why does Mumsnet now have a Scotsnet section?

likalixer · 26/04/2015 18:00

I've just noticed that Scotnset now has it's very own section (came up in Active) this was news to me! Is it recent?
Isn't it encouraging segregation? Confused
How about we also have these sections:

Irishnet, Welshnet, Englishnet, and so on?

I agree actually. Should be the same for all, or none. Imho

Others are wondering.

There was a thread in a Site Issues about the level of support for Scotsnet before MNHQ decided to start it, and I suppose that would have been the place to object.

chocoluvva · 26/04/2015 18:17

I sometimes think a forum for mn-etters who live rurally or a long way from urban areas might go down well - half of Scotland and cornwall might enjoy it (apologies to anyone else who would enjoy it)

FWIW -Although there are regional news programmes (on the telly and radio) I sometimes think the national news includes items which aren't relevant to Scottish viewers eg cricket, changes to the English and welsh nhs, education reforms that don't apply to Scotland, heatwaves......

Annunziata · 26/04/2015 18:18

I don't like it either. It takes two seconds to type 'I'm in Scotland', don't see why there has to be a whole board.

likalixer · 26/04/2015 18:19

So if the Welsh and Irish (who's school systems and holidays and NHS are also slightly different) want their own boards, then they should campaign/ask Mumsnet for it.
Sounds fair.

YaTalkinToMe · 26/04/2015 18:19

Yes, but they are completely different sites - in their own right

I did not realise that, as they came under the topics on here.

It was requested, it was given.
You can request "any other" net.

SunshineAndShadows · 26/04/2015 18:20

Because the Scottish guys asked for it. If the Irish or the Welsh guys want a section I guess they'll have to put forward the same kind of campaign. But to only do this based on 'they have it so why can't we' rather than a sense of genuine need ( which clearly hadn't arisen prior to now) seems a bit childish.

PerspicaciaTick · 26/04/2015 18:20

There is a Scotsnet section because lots of MNers asked for it.

That I didn't see. I don't think many people did see it maybe that was the idea
Maybe they should have put it in AIBU (more traffic) Smile

Examples of threads in Scotsnet -

Scottish Primary Education
Edinburgh airport to Glasgow suburbs
Southern General maternity

So essentially like the local boards.

PerspicaciaTick · 26/04/2015 18:22

likalixer - I've link to the request thread above. It has 650 posts so attracted a lot of interest for a thread in Site Stuff.

likalixer · 26/04/2015 18:25

Perspicacia, thanks for the link.
Seems like I completely missed all that! Confused

It seems as if enough of you asked for it.
So now you have your own section. okay.
Question answered.

MissDemelzaCarne · 26/04/2015 18:25

Scotsnet was requested in Sitestuff.
If the Welsh and Irish and aussies and Americans want their own sections they can always ask and if there's enough interest then they can have one. I don't see the issue with it - exactly!

YABU BTW

likalixer · 26/04/2015 18:28

I see now (having looked at the link) that lots of people wanted it.

OP posts:
BitOfFun · 26/04/2015 18:29

I don't see the problem at all.

AyeAmarok · 26/04/2015 18:30

Don't be petty OP. HQ agreed there was a genuine need as it can be a nightmare trying to talk about legal issues, the NHS, education, university, buying homes etc on the normal boards as there are serious differences in the systems, and useful advice gets mixed in with useless advice from well-meaning people in England etc.

morethanpotatoprints · 26/04/2015 18:32

I think its really good.
Nobody is saying that if you are scottish you have to post here.
So many times you read a thread are about to give some meaningful response and they say they are in Scotland, so what you have to say is irrelevant now because the law is different.
Giving these type of threads their own space will be useful.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 26/04/2015 18:33

Scotland's education, legal and healthcare system are more than 'slightly different' from England's. For example, with education, it has only a little to do with term times (as they also differ across Scotland) and a lot to do with a completely different exam structure, starting ages, SEN provision, etc.
Our legal system is completely different too.

It means a lot of well-meaning advice is completely inaccurate. And often when posters preface their question with I'm in Scotland posters in other parts of the country don't understand the relevance and think they're just sharing their location as an aside when actually it's fundamental to their question.

pinkr · 26/04/2015 18:35

Ooh I hasn't noticed!thanks. ..I'll check it out!
Och aye the noo

Eigg · 26/04/2015 18:35

lika your post at 18:20 was pretty offensive.

There was, as pp have linked to, a large and fairly long running thread requesting the section. It was IIRC also discussed on at least one other thread. This wasn't done sleekit Cybernat campaign as you appear you appear to be suggesting.

FYI many of the posters supporting the section are extremely anti-independence.

If the Welsh or Irish posters would like their own section they only have to create a similar persuasive campaign and doubt MN towers will respond appropriately.

Sunshine thank you for your supportive post Flowers.

liveloveluggage · 26/04/2015 18:37

I wanted a section called Sexnet for people living in Sussex, Essex and Wessex but so far MN haven't got back to me on the idea.

lucycant · 26/04/2015 18:38

Scotland is so different on many issues and I have seen it cause issues. For example a different legal system, different laws such as age you can marry and age of criminal responsibility. It has a totally different education system, a different system of school allocation, and a different national curriculum. It has different laws around buying houses, a different medical system, and the universities are different.

These are far bigger differences than a local board is meant for.

chocoluvva · 26/04/2015 18:38

Grin at sexnet

AyeAmarok · 26/04/2015 18:41

I'm just gutted that it wasn't called Mawsnet Grin

likalixer · 26/04/2015 18:41

Thank you Eigg Flowers for the information.

I hadn't realized there was a long running campaign to get their own section. I very rarely look at Sitestuff.
And I agree, that if people campaigned for it (I looked at the link - that was a LOT of posts) then maybe there is a need for it.
(As I said a few times upthread)

Maybe me re-asking the question is a good thing, as I'm sure other people are curious. This will answer their questions
And at least in AIBU more people will see it.
