Why does Mumsnet now have a Scotsnet section?

I've just noticed that Scotnset now has it's very own section (came up in Active) this was news to me! Is it recent?
Isn't it encouraging segregation? Confused
How about we also have these sections:

Irishnet, Welshnet, Englishnet, and so on?

Sexnet! Now that would be popular Grin

Well surely before you decide to ask such a petty 'why do they have and we don't' question you would do at least basic research into how it came about...? Saves you looking a bit stupid like you do now.

chocoluvva · 26/04/2015 18:49

I'm glad it wasn't called 'Mawsnet'! Only some Scottish people use the term 'maw' -central belt, maybe further north and south, but not all over Scotland.

It's like the line, 'Irn Bru is Scotland's national drink' - no it's not. It's much more popular in the central belt (I think)

I hate it when Scottish people take pride in being parochial.

Sorry to be all heavy about it, but it seriously does get my goat.

MsMarvel · 26/04/2015 18:49

And you do realise that the different sections such as AIBU are for actual reasons and not just a place to post everything 'so people will see it'? If everyone decided to do that the site would get pretty messy...

backwardpossom · 26/04/2015 18:50

I don't like it either. It takes two seconds to type 'I'm in Scotland', don't see why there has to be a whole board.

Except it gets ignored and people answer based on their knowledge of English systems. It doesn't matter how many times an OP states they're in Scotland.

likalixer · 26/04/2015 18:51

MsMarvel you have made your point. No need to keep on.

I've said that I realize that there is a need for a separate/additional section.
Lots of people end up re-asking questions that have already been asked.
It's no biggie! and not the crime of the century.

The thread with the original Scotsnet idea was in AIBU, btw.

Eigg · 26/04/2015 18:57

AIBU would have been the wrong place for it though.

Plenty of people managed to find it in Sitestuff.

Would you really have posted on the thread saying we shouldn't be allowed it? That would have gone well.

tabulahrasa · 26/04/2015 18:58

"It takes two seconds to type 'I'm in Scotland', don't see why there has to be a whole board."

But what happens is that when you're posting about something where it's a completely different system like education is that you put that you're in Scotland and people post as if it's the same as England, so you repeat that you're in Scotland and they carry on until you say that it's a different education system and that's not how it works...then someone else comes along only reads the opening post and it starts again.

Or... People know their information isn't applicable, so no-one answers and by the time someone does come along who could answer it the thread has drifted off the front page.

Annunziata · 26/04/2015 19:01

But tabulahrasa most people probably won't notice it's posted in Scotsnet anyway, especially if they use 'active conversations'. I know I've ended up on odd boards before. So nothing will change.

likalixer · 26/04/2015 19:06

Auunziata,
this is why most people post under AIBU, it's not as people think - alway to be controversial or stir things up,
I use it to get lots of answers quickly.
lets face it, AIBU gets a LOT of traffic.
It does what it says on the tin!

Why does it bother people so much?

Christinayangstwistedsister · 26/04/2015 19:16

Who the hell would care in you had englishnet...what a statement!

MissDemelzaCarne · 26/04/2015 19:18

AIBU gets a LOT of traffic
It does what it says on the tin! Hmm

But what it says on the tin is 'Am I Being Unreasonable?'
That's not what you asked in your OP and is not what was asked in the request for Scotsnet.
There's so much more to MN than AIBU!

I think people are missing the point. It's about giving posters what they ask for if they can demonstrate a need. There isn't a Welshnet, Irishnet, Ausnet etc because postets from those areas haven't requested one. The Scots are not getting special treatment - they've simply asked for a board that's relevant to their interests just like Dadsnet, gransnet, or whatever.

It would be ludicrous to have an Englishnet because the majority of the boards (legal, property, education etc) are already used towards the English system. I'm English and I can see how petty that argument is.

I seriously don't understands by anyone is bothered by this Confused

cedricsneer · 26/04/2015 19:28

I suspect there are far more scots than collectives of different nationalities on mn. In fact my anecdotal research over 10 years bears that out.

People seem to be deliberately ignoring the patiently made point about different systems and focusing on it being some form of Scottish supremacy - seems to reflect the fear people in general and the media are showing towards scotland becoming too big for its boots (the rise of snp etc).

Fwiw I was a no voter, am not voting snp in the election, but still appreciate a scotsnet for all the reasons mentioned above.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 26/04/2015 19:30

There was a thread not long ago about 'where are you', there were a huge amount posting from Scotland, just saying.

I'm English and am not bothered a jot about Scottish mnetters having a separate section.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/04/2015 19:32

Except it gets ignored and people answer based on their knowledge of English systems. It doesn't matter how many times an OP states they're in Scotland.

To be fair, I'm not sure that posters outside of Scotland actually realise how different education/legal etc is in Scotland (sorry if this is a gross misrepresentation - its just the impression I get)

Christinayangstwistedsister · 26/04/2015 19:32

By the way, everyone is welcome to visit, we aren't all running about shouting freeedoooommmmmm

WendyTorrance · 26/04/2015 19:34
