To think a teacher can not successfully differentiate for mixed ability class where there is a spread of children on the p scales and children who are top end of level 6

Ie. Class of 30 children, year 5 and no ta full time support. I can't see how it is humanly possible for a teacher to teach such a wide range of ability without help. Crazy.

Lokibear - yes, it's the last year of levels and level 6 tests. But the new tests will contain questions which match the old level 6, according to the dfe.

This is why I went part time McCrone cover. I had a class of 32, no TA and severe behaviour management issues with 2 pupils who have subsequently both been placed in youth offenders institutions. It was relentless. I almost lost my mind.

Our school have Y3 to Y6 all in one class, so catering for a wide spread of age as well as ability. All seem to do well, though much smaller class (14 children)

As an NQT I had a mixed year 5/6 class in a small rural school, 15 years ago.
Abilities ranged from what might be expected of an average 6 year old to high level 6.
With a TA for 2 hours a week (spent doing dexterity activities with a child 1:1) and a distant, uninterested head, I left after one year.
