To be really excited that a woman is having a baby. Again. I mean, no one else has ever had a baby, have they?

And it's going to be on the TELLY! And in the papers. And all over Twitter. We've got three weeks of this.

The OP didn't start a thread about a birth she isn't interested in, she started a thread about the hype about the birth, which is difficult to avoid if you watch any telly, listen to any radio or read any newspaper. The occasional passing mention is fair enough, I mean it is news, that's a fact, but endless speculation even from before conception really does wear thin. Am also with those who pointed out that cooing over prospective royal babies is a useful distraction technique. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with those who like to coo over royal babies. I'm annoyed at having royal babies thrust under my nose with a "Coo Here" instruction.

I used to be a staunch monarchist but am leaning towards republicanism these days, ironically not so much because of the unwarranted privilege but more for the reasons that GingerCuddleMonster put forward to defend them: these children stand no chance at all of living a normal life. Other celebrities may have chosen to be in the public eye (although that is also open to abuse by the media); the Royals have no choice. Even if they choose to give up their privilege they will be famous for what they used to be or could have been. They'll be spied upon and analysed within an inch of their lives whatever they do, for ever. They are born to a gilded cage; you may scrape off the gilt but the cage will remain. It's nowhere near as bad as being born in the gutter with very little chance to better yourself, obviously, but that doesn't mean it's ok.

FyreFly · 21/04/2015 10:17

I'm a pretty devout follower of TV Annie but I genuinely haven't seen much about it at all! And I tend to have the 24hr news on a lot. Granted I don't listen to much radio however I haven't seen anything on the internet either...

I must be looking in the wrong places!

lem73 · 21/04/2015 10:18

I know she had a hairdresser and make up artist come to the hospital but she had every right to try to look her best when she was going to have to face the world's media. I think the size of the crowd last time was shameful.
On the morning news they said when the Queen was born it was announced on page 14 of the Times. What a contrast. My gran used to live near the Duke and Duchess of York in the 1920s and she would see the Queen being pushed around in her pram with no one paying any attention whereas the paparazzi have tried to take pictures of in the park.
For the record I find them a very bland couple but they handle being in the public eye very graciously and modestly.

GingerCuddleMonster · 21/04/2015 10:30

Hey hey....annie defend is far too strong a word for my liking Wink I'll stick with opposing argument haha Grin.

ScotsWhaHae · 21/04/2015 11:05

Is that true? Grin

ScotsWhaHae · 21/04/2015 11:16

Whoops sorry didn't refresh the page! I was referring to this post:

At least now the Queen Mum's dead the bookies won't get ripped off over the name. She took William Hill for 25k over Harry

dougierose · 21/04/2015 11:34

Oh Fyrefly and Elledouble - thank god you pointed out that it's the Queen's birthday today. I was starting to panic.

AliceLidl - coughs, this was a little market town in Leicestershire. But then again, Leicestershire is the most featured county out in t' country in the Tatler Bystander column and it IS pretty nobby round here.

I started this thread because I had Sky News on last night and there was 15 minutes about the press camping out outside the hospital. WTF. It's only going to get worse, isn't it? I remember last time when I thought we'd escaped because we were on holiday, only to return and discover that KM was overdue and we had 24hr coverage for over A WEEK, with my Mum saying every 5 minutes "Isn't it wonderful we're having a baby?"

NO WE'RE NOT!!!!! And when I did have my two DCs, why weren't you this excited, Mum, rather than telling me off for not smiling enough when she invited the entire family round for lunch (which I had to cook) on the same day I was discharged after a C-section.

So, reading back on all this, I guess I'm jealous that there was no bunting for me, no hairdresser, no nice coat and no round of applause. That's it, isn't it? Has anyone of us EVER had a round of applause for producing a baby?

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 21/04/2015 11:39

All babies are beautiful. Regardless of whether they're born in a castle or a stable.
Now may be I'm being over sensitive here. I do hAve previous for it, but just been watching this morning and I didn't like the title products fit for royalty. Ever child deserves the best not just those with the greatest respect are born with don't know about a silver spoon but a diamond spoon in their mouth.
I suppose it is quite exciting news though but when it's constant it does get monotonous.
Be more exciting if we were awAiting the birth of a kitten though.
Love squishy fluffy kittens. Grin

dougierose · 21/04/2015 11:45

Hang on, so This Morning has just done an entire feature?

It's too soon. Tooooo sooooooooonnnn!

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 21/04/2015 12:01

What else do you expect This Morning to feature? It's not Panorama.

Sparklingbrook · 21/04/2015 12:09

Gok Wan is showing us how to dress like a cowboy at the moment. Phil and Mandy look riveted.

Sparklingbrook · 21/04/2015 12:11

Oh FFS just look a that rubbish shirt. Like Elvis.

Arsenic · 21/04/2015 12:20

Nicholas Witchell and a BBC anchor had a little moment of eye rolling the other night. The media hate this baby-fever too. It's not what journalists train for. Maybe Gok could go and cheer them up. They'd love that.

Momagain1 · 21/04/2015 12:47

I really hope she does Northern an 'oops we didn't make it to the capital' on time home birth in Norfolk would be the best thing ever.

Even though it's only a spare, the future tourist money would be appreciated! And maybe there is some money to be made if a private maternity hospital can make a play to create a fashion for having your baby in Norfolk and a good lie in for a week after (necessitationg hotel rooms for both pair of dgp at least, yes?

Anniegetyourgun · 21/04/2015 13:56

I don't watch any television at all, FyreFly ! And I'm still - well, inundated is putting it too strongly, but frequently reminded is probably accurate enough. Any newspaper or magazine I see other than strictly local or sectoral tends to have some mention somewhere.

Sorry Ginger. Putting the other side of an argument is fair enough. There are undoubtedly advantages to having a monarchy. The only question is whether they outweigh the disadvantages.

dougierose your mother seems to have odd priorities. Surely every right-thinking woman is fully aware that her own grandchildren are the most important as well as the most beautiful babies in the history of human reproduction? I know that isn't just me! I don't blame you for being a bit miffed.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 21/04/2015 14:44

It's better to be the spare than the heir. The heir hardly ever gets to be in charge - something often happens to them, although admittedly the days of head chopping are probably over but even in the 20th century not many made it. The queen could outlive Charlie though, her mum was 100 or more...

FyreFly · 21/04/2015 15:36

Perhaps I'm just oblivious Annie - I can't say it's something that registers highly on my list of interest!

limitedperiodonly · 21/04/2015 15:45

I have the TV tuned to Sky while I'm working. There was a short item on Kate's baby but mostly they're covering Conservative scaremongering about Labour and the dread SNP and the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean.

ATM they're doing a debate on the pros and cons of negative campaigning.

I'm mostly interested in election bollocks - it's quite important - but like Royal baby bollocks too - which isn't, but it's light relief.

Sparklingbrook · 21/04/2015 16:02

I have been out. No news of the royal bubba then?

silverglitterpisser · 21/04/2015 16:09

Yanbu, it is absolute overkill n then some. Makes me want to put my head in a vat of acid.

TedAndLola · 21/04/2015 16:09

I have a colleague obsessed with Kate Middleton. I have to bite my tongue every time she starts talking about it. Thankfully all the rest of my team are disinterested as well so her prattling tends to be short lived Grin

browneyedgirl86 · 21/04/2015 16:29

Yanbu. I think it is overkill.

When George was born it was all over our big screens at work for several days so couldn't even escape the news at work!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 21/04/2015 16:45

Ted. Obsessed.!!!
Me thinks you're friend needs to get out moreGrin

lem73 · 21/04/2015 19:06

Obsessed?! What is there to talk about except her hair?

limitedperiodonly · 21/04/2015 19:20

I'm a news junkie and a republican who has the TV tuned to Sky News during the day.

I don't understand what you are frothing about.
