You are not alone. That is a pet peeve of mine and makes me crazy.

My DH and DS know when they are being too loud (they tell me I give the "the look") and immediately stop.

The worse is popcorn in a theater. Uugghhh!Angry

LongDistanceLove · 19/04/2015 22:48

Look up Misophonia. It's fucking awful.

Notmeagain1 · 19/04/2015 22:52

Thanks, Long

I had no idea there was a name for it. Just thought I too was sensitive or a grouch.Grin

cleanmyhouse · 19/04/2015 22:53

People eating apples. Especially that big noisy first bite. Rage.

squoosh · 19/04/2015 22:56

Listening to someone eat an apple is absolute torture for me.

cleanmyhouse · 19/04/2015 22:57

oh, its not just me then. I thought i was just a bit of an intollerant cow.

LongDistanceLove · 19/04/2015 22:57

Grin I thought that for 20 years! Them I found a name and thousands of people who have the same thing.

Earplugs are my best friends Hmm Blush

honeysucklejasmine · 19/04/2015 23:00

I still remember Apple Girl, who also liked to make use of computer rooms late at night at uni. And the rage I felt, and the desire to shove the fucking apple right up ....

Ahem.

MsDragons · 19/04/2015 23:03

I CANNOT eat with dp unless there is some sort of background noise like the tv or radio. He is the loudest eater in the history of the world, I'm sure. Some things he eats I had no idea it was possible to eat it loudly, but he manages it. Angry

He seems to be passing this annoying trait on to dd2 as well :( I had to leave the room when she was eating a sandwich at lunchtime.

kissmethere · 19/04/2015 23:06

Yep feel your pain. Dh seems to gnash his teeth down as he chews. A chomp I think. Omg torture!! Angry

cleanmyhouse · 19/04/2015 23:08

Laughing at apple girl. I wouldn't have been if i'd had to listen to it. Rage.

squoosh · 19/04/2015 23:10

That gulpy noise some people make when they swallow a drink makes me feel furious.

Leafitout · 19/04/2015 23:20

Yanbu it's my pet hate that really pisses me off. It's so unecessary to do it.

HowDoesThatWork · 19/04/2015 23:20

I have just read the misophonia wiki page.

Fight or flight - yes that is my feeling.

There was some stuff on treatment, like increasing background noise, but nothing on making the feckers eat quietly.

And as for folk on mobile phones talking near me, christ...

Momagain1 · 19/04/2015 23:27

Yikes, my husband is the same, MsDragons. I just dont understand HOW he makes so much noise eating and drinking. Even something like ice cream!

The different table manner expectations we were raised with can momentarily distract me from the noise. I have mostly trained myself not to see those habits, though. But I can't unhear.

DarthVadersTailor · 19/04/2015 23:33

YANBU.

Fucking HATE this. My DS used to be really bad in this respect though thankfully it's only now on occasion I have to tell him to chew with his mouth shut.

He's 10 though. When adults do it I feel like breaking their jaw, when all you hear is slurp slurp slurp like a dog licking its balls....

It is the liquidy sounds, when someone has mushed up the food in their mouth that makes me fearful of my own rage Angry

Gruntfuttock · 20/04/2015 00:07

I feel rage at noisy eaters, but nothing makes me feel more murderous than hearing yawning, especially if the yawner talks through the yawn, and if they use the word "sleepy" there is no torture bad enough to punish the bastard!.
The thing is, once I've heard someone doing this, my masochistic brain will continously replay the sound for the rest of the day. I really want to kill the person responsible, I am so enraged. Angry

EauPea · 20/04/2015 00:19

Grin Darth Have you heard me on a rant??

I may have proposed once or twice, that the noisy eater should quit sounding like a dog licking it's bollocks or they might end up gagging on their own Angry

reni1 · 20/04/2015 01:05

I find eating noises only marginally less disgusting than toilet noises.

SingingHinnies · 20/04/2015 01:20

my ex suffers from misophonia

it was so annoying listening to him moaning every time you ate something.

Now i send the kids to his house with Jubblies to slurp on, i have seen him leave the room as he can't stand anyone eating near him. I didn't know it was a recognised conditon until this year

AlwaysDancing1234 · 20/04/2015 02:17

It's only recently I've learned that there is a name for this and that I'm not the only one!
I was actually cringing just reading about someone eating an apple as I can hear the sound in my head IYSWIMAngry
Another sound I can't stand is wine pouring out of a bottle - that plinky plummy sound arrrghghhh!!!!

ProudAS · 20/04/2015 07:24

Maybe we should all live on slimfast shakes.

I'm not bothered by the sound of eating but rustling crisp packets when I'm trying to watch TV or relax are different.

DocHollywood · 20/04/2015 07:35

Dp eating cereal sounds like feeding time at the elephant house. The slurping from the spoon as he hoovers up milk and flakes and the first two chews with his mouth wide open then the series of teeth grinding moments with the dried bananas. Jaw dancing up and down and side to side then a pause, swallow, and the whole ritual starts again. I've left the room by then of course.

Oh god, and don't get me started on his loud yawns. And teeth cleaning. I suppose there must be a few moments in the day when I'm not on edgeGrin
