Nastiest celebs...

Very trivial discussion (so I know I am being unreasonable already Grin ), but I am reading a thread about nasty celebs from 2008 (google brought me there) and really enjoying the gossip... AIBU to ask who the nicest and vilest celebs are who you have met in real life?

Stephen Gately was the loveliest celeb I've met - really down to earth and amazing with his fans. I wasn't one of the die hards but I met him a number of times and he was often the one to come and say hello first. On a number of occasions I saw him go completely above and beyond for his fans, nothing was too much trouble. Was devastated when he passed away.

Other than that I've mainly met comedians, no one has been nasty! Someone upthread said that David Baddiel is a dick - he is basically my fave person and was very sweet to me when I was wittering and gushing about his first novel (my favourite book), took the time to stop for a quick chat and to sign my book even though his mates were waiting for him in bar next door.

Jools Holland lives round my way and once cut me up in his big shiny Jeep thing so I'm not keen on him. Lots of other people say he's really nice though (my dad used to drink with him now and again) so I might be letting my 4x4 hatred cloud my judgement!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/04/2015 13:55

In spite of my speculation above, I agree actually! Not really in place on a thread about nastiness.

ArcheryAnnie · 21/04/2015 13:58

I've thought of another one! Konnie Huq - absolutely lovely, totally normal, tiny, and very clever. We need a word for "the opposite of a diva".

iHAVEtogetoutofhere · 21/04/2015 13:58

I was once sleazed all over by a certain Mr Archer at a book signing of his that I accidentally wandered into.
He wanted his picture taken with me. I declined.
His 'man' was really horrible and was directly repeating what JA said.
Yak.

Not quite a 'sleb' but H texted me earlier to say he'd seen a certain Mr Osbourne in Edinburgh on a bridge. I suggested he push him off and I would bake a cake with a file in it to send him in prison as a 'thank you' from a grateful nation wellmeanyway

muminhants · 21/04/2015 14:01

Just remembered that I met Hannah Gordon about 10 years ago. She was lovely. I also had a fleeting encounter with Cherie Blair at a law conference but not long enough to get an impression.

CatHammock · 21/04/2015 14:01

Terry Pratchett was lovely. Met him in person several times, and I also spent a lot of time on Usenet, where he'd also hang out. Kind of like your favourite grumpy uncle.

For values of famous that include "have a documentary series on BBC4", I've worked with Mary Beard and Catherine Edwards - both lovely, if basically standard senior female academics. Catherine Edwards is shockingly beautiful in the flesh, and rather funny with a couple of glasses of wine. Iain Stewart (also on iplayer at the moment, doing assorted earth sciences programs) was my lecturer when I was an undergrad, and he is unquestionably awesome - great to learn from, enthusiastic, patient and caring. Also, quite fit. Would recommend.

Drowsybutawake · 21/04/2015 14:03

Not surprised at all by Queen Mum or Mr Tumble - I always got the impression from his shows that he is not a nice man but I'm surprised how many other parents don't see it!

Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall live near us, I've heard lots of stories about how they are very friendly and down to earth, but all I can say is that Tindall nearly ran over DH and an old lady by accelerating into his drive in a really dangerous way. DH wanted to pull him up on it but I think MT could squash him with one hand to be honest Wink.

Not met many nasty slebs but the worst one was Yann Martel, author of Life of Pi - v unpleasant.

Lj8893 · 21/04/2015 14:22

Sarah Parish is lovely, and so beautiful.

She's from a town near me and was a patron of a young performing arts group I was in. She came to see one of our shows and was sat behind my mum and when I sang a Tina turner number was up on her feet dancing and cheering. My mum was ecstatic!

LaChatte · 21/04/2015 14:30

Peter Lord (Aardman studios - Wallace & Gromit) is witty and generally lovely, he came to give a talk at a film festival a year or so ago and he took the time to answer questions and sign autographs despite running late and having a train to catch!

Lj8893 · 21/04/2015 14:36

Oh and the guy who plays Peter Beale in eastenders lives in my town. I haven't met him (that I'm aware of anyway!) but everyone says he's really nice and down to earth.

Tropicalchancer · 21/04/2015 14:40

Marc almond was lovely, complimented my mum on her tea and scones and generally very polite, Imelda may was just gorgous, tiny and so damn friendly-made me feel like she was honoured to meet me!!

vladthedisorganised · 21/04/2015 14:46

My only nasty celebrity one wasn't actually a celebrity (an artist called Christian Boltanski, known in some modern art circles but not exactly a household name): he was incredibly diva-ish, snubbed all the other artists and was mega-grumpy unless he was surrounded by a group of fawning admirers.

Damien Hirst, on the other hand, was really smiley and friendly to everyone.

Ian McKellen - very sweet to me when I was 10 and met him on the Tube. We had a lovely chat about books.

Joan Collins - lovely

Gordon Brown - surprisingly funny, seemed very genuine, didn't do any 'politician spiel' at all.

MonstrousRatbag · 21/04/2015 14:48

Bill Clinton was nice to work for once he'd had his nasty screaming blamefest every morning. Quite astoundingly intelligent, apparently. Hilary is clever and kind and funny, plus she works incredibly hard.

I used to live near Michael Portillo years ago and he was very low-key. Chatted to the checkout people in the supermarket, said hello to everyone, and was generally very chilled for a Cabinet Minister, as he then was.

Tom Parker-Bowles is nice, very interesting to talk to and has lovely manners (but then BIL has met his mother and was very taken with how pleasant she was).

My lovely lovely ex-boss had friends who, for some reason or other, bothered to suck up to Princess Margaret and she was so awful they had trouble getting their other friends to visit if the princess was going to be there. She expected people to bend to her every whim-kept you waiting 3 hours for dinner, smoked incessantly over everyone, allowed no one to go to bed before she did, was very rude if you didn't appear to be kowtowing enough. My boss could not understand why anyone would put up with it.

Sansarya · 21/04/2015 14:53

A friend of my aunt once met the former King of Spain and said he came across as a bit of a sleazebag. Which makes the think the stories about him are true…

Lumobile · 21/04/2015 15:43

I used to work for a major international airline and so my job brought me into contact with lots of 'celebs'.
The worst I encountered was Daniella Westbrook, this was during the early-mid 90s.
Interestingly I always found that the genuinely talented famous people were usually the ones who were the most pleasant....

yeahokthen · 21/04/2015 16:00

Jayne Middlemiss once swapped seats so my DSs could sit together, she was lovely & smiley.
Joseph Fiennes was charming & very down to earth.
Juliette Binoche, stunningly beautiful IRL and very normal.
Johnny Depp, perfectly pleasant but a bit starry
Bob Geldoph, scruffy but polite.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/04/2015 16:01

Also on Princess Margaret - just remembered she visited the Thornton's chocolate factory near us and threw a fit when they asked her to wear protective head covering; they had to throw away most of that day's production because of possible contamination

And Andre Previn - we were once in the same Austrian hotel as a small orchestra made up of young lads, who later saw him in a Salzburg street. Their group leader told him what they did and he spent ages with the boys, asking really in depth questions and even giving them tips. I doubt any of them will ever forget it ...

YouTheCat · 21/04/2015 16:02

My brother had a pint or two nine with Mike Tindall at Twickenham last month. Said he was a 'top bloke'.

InAndOfMyself · 21/04/2015 16:07

William Shatner was an ass of the first order when I met him. It wasn't under ideal conditions, hid mother was in the hospital, but he was rude and dismissive of everyone.

I've mentioned on another thread that Keanu Reeves is just lovely.

Koalafications · 21/04/2015 16:07

Who is GL? I really must know [stern face]

I'm Grin at Daniella Westbrook and Denise Welch bring hard work. They must just not be very nice people. I can understand an A-List celebrity being 'detached from reality' but people like this... Hmm Grin Confused

Koalafications · 21/04/2015 16:07

*being

Sansarya · 21/04/2015 16:14

Koalafications think former footballer, now on telly, famous for the largeness of certain body parts...

(not that part!!)

Koalafications · 21/04/2015 16:17

Got it! Thank you Sansarya

YouTheCat · 21/04/2015 16:25

Koala, they are/were both (allegedly) very heavy cocaine users.

nowitscleanugobshite · 21/04/2015 17:15

Having spent a portion of my middle age lusting after him-and in spite of THAT kilt pic I still would!!-I can say that Darius Danesh Campbell is lovely. Very handsome, VERY tall -6'6"+ tall! I've met him a number of times and he was always charming. A friend and I met him before a gig/after/ and again at the after show party. When she said "I'm sorry-one more photo and I PROMISE I'll take her home" he told her there was no need to apologise, he enjoyed what he did and meeting people was all part of that". He was about 22 at that time and she told him that he was the same age as her son and the next time he saw his mum he was to thank her for bringing him up so nicely because she would be proud if her son had been so lovely!
