To ask dog walkers to be considerate

I have a garden to the side of house and people seem to think it is fine to allow their dogs to do their business in it, i asked one dog owner to not allow his dog on garden his response -but I'll clean it up, fine but why cant they clean it up off their own gardens or even clean up off pavement....why allow dog to go in someone elses garden in first place?

I think fencing it is the only answer, especially if it was --- until your recent purchase ... fair game. Few posts and wire mesh would do temporarily & is cheap enough (especially if you buy from agricultural supplier, rather than garden shop.

Is there any reason why you don't want to or can't fence it?

Hang on. So if there is unfenced grass next to someones house it's "fair game"? Even if they don't own it? But if it's beside someones house it's fine to take your dog, from your own home to theirs, to empty it's bowels?

Surely no one really thinks thats ok do they? I mean obviously people do this all the time but it's indefensible to take your dog to someone else house to shit outside of it Confused

Reginafalangie · 15/04/2015 11:03

But it wasn't always the OP's garden so it would have been "common ground" the OP wasn't complaining about the dogs prior to purchasing it so without doing something that shows it is now owned how are people meant to know?

SoupDragon · 15/04/2015 11:04

No one is doing that.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/04/2015 11:05

None of the front gardens down our road have fences or hedges (something to do with a covenant or planning rules or something - not sure - but we can't put up fences). When I walk the dogs down the road, they sometimes stray onto other people's lawns, and I always make them come back onto the pavement. I wouldn't dream of letting them do their business on someone else's garden.

My mum once caught a man lifting his dog over our front fence, so it could do its business on our lawn - she had a 'quiet word' with him about it (translation - bollocked him to next Tuesday and back WinkGrin) and he never made that mistake again!

SisterJulienne your problem is purely with dog owners who don't pick up.

Reginafalangie · 15/04/2015 11:16

The OP did state that owners were clearing up after themselves. Where are dogs meant to go? Common ground is just that common and as long as owners are cleaning up the mess I see no issue with it.

Dr0pThePirate · 15/04/2015 11:17

SoupDragon

The man the OP is talking about is letting his dog shit on the grass outside her house.

Reginafalangie you shouldn't need a purchase order to show someone why dogs crapping outside your home is unpleasant.

Seriously, if you have no problem with dog shit then let your dog go in your own garden. Don't expect others to share your laid back attitude.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 15/04/2015 11:18

I'd try a barrier op, dogs can't read signs and if the man this morning ignored you he will probably ignore a sign.

If dogs or foxes poo there it is scent signposted so the dog thinks it is OK to go there, and if owners don't stop them they will.

You have my sympathies, I am a dog owner but next door's dog makes a beeline for the garden on the other side of us every day. His owners always try to stop him but some times they are not fast enough. They have tried everything but he seems determined to poo there.

Dr0pThePirate · 15/04/2015 11:24

Listen, if shit was so easy to clean up by simply picking up then sewage systems would never have been invented. Dogs shit on grass, owner picks up noticeable chucks but still leaves faeces on the grass. Fine in your own garden but don't do this outside other peoples homes or god forbid anywhere someone might like to sit on the grass.

Reginafalangie · 15/04/2015 11:26

Dogs crap anywhere it takes them when outside. Just a fact of life. Owners are responsible for cleaning it up. Letting a dog crap on a grass verge/common ground is not an issue as long as the owners cleans up. My dogs do go in my back garden however that doesn't mean they won't go again when I take them for their twice daily walk.

Chattymummyhere · 15/04/2015 11:27

I'm guessing it's like my mums house and has been used before for people walking alone and dogs of course have been walked along it. A small fence would be best to stop the dogs in the first place. Sign up saying its private property.

RudeBarbandCustard · 15/04/2015 11:29

I would guess that most people don't realize this is your private garden, and just assume it's a bit of grass that their dogs are free to roam on. I'm not condoning their actions, but just trying to find an explanation.

So put up a sign - that will deter responsible owners. I had to do this in my driveway as people would regularly let their dogs shit in it, right where I would be stepping out of my car. So I found a cartoon online of someone stepping in dog shit, and printed it onto a sign saying "Private - Don't let your dogs poo here!"

Irresponsible people - those who let their dogs shit all over the road and don't clear up, won't pay any notice to your sign. So stick up a cheap temporary fence.

People are disgusting.

SoupDragon · 15/04/2015 11:31

The man the OP is talking about is letting his dog shit on the grass outside her house.

He is not taking the dog there to shit though. There is a clear difference between "I'm taking my dog to shit outside no. 6" and "Oh, my dog has shat outside no. 6"

Reginafalangie · 15/04/2015 11:32

This really made me laugh Grin

Love the idea that the dog should know or can tell that the grass is owned. Also trying to stop a dog mid movement is pointless and causes more mess.

SoupDragon · 15/04/2015 11:35

LOLOL - what a ridiculous statement! The sewage system doesn't just "pick up shit" it disposes of it and treats the water. Also, there are far far more humans than dogs.

I can think of a few people whose houses I would like to take my dog to shit outside but I am not that organised and neither are my dog's bowels.

SirChenjin · 15/04/2015 11:38

YANBU OP. My front garden isn't fenced off, neither is my driveway - both are next to my house. Does that mean that dog owners could technically use the excuse that 'it doesn't have a fence, therefore I can let my dog shit on it'?

Rule of thumb for those who have difficulty using their common sense. If a piece of land is right next to a house in a residential estate then it's best to err on the side of caution and not to let your dog shit there. Let them shit in your garden instead. Or in the gutter where you can clean it up without leaving big smears of your dog's poo.

Sadly though, OP - it seems as if a fence (preferably with the words "No Dog Shit Here" is required.

Dr0pThePirate · 15/04/2015 11:38

Love the idea that the dog should know or can tell that the grass is owned

But the idea the owner might use some sense (it is outside someones house) or show a bit of contrition when confronted isn't exactly off the map either.

hestialou · 15/04/2015 11:39

My point is he knows I told him it is our garden and he still carried on! Tempted to borrow a dog to poo in his garden see how that goes down.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 15/04/2015 11:40

My front garden isn't fenced off, neither is my driveway - both are next to my house.

Which is entirely different to the OP's scenario where she has recently bought an area of land which is not previously a part of her property.

Reginafalangie · 15/04/2015 11:41

I couldn't stop my dog pooping. I don't encourage him to crap on peoples gardens and where possible I pull him away if he even looks like he is going to but at the same time I am not always fast enough.

The dog owner in the OP was rude and should have apologised however not all dog owners need to be tarred with the same brush.
