and possibly PFB about nursery teaching DS to say "ta"?

Hearing adults saying to babies and children "say taaaaaa" whenever they give them something has long been a pet hate of mine, it gives me the absolute rage.

Twice this week I've heard different people at nursery say this to DS and it's made me shudder.

This isn't about me wanting DS (15 months) to say the full 'thank you' on his first attempt, he will make whatever sounds he wants to for the words as he does with everything else and that's fine, what I hate is him being taught that the word is 'ta' in the first place.

Would IBU to say something to nursery about this? I am severely sleep deprived at the moment so fully prepared to be told that I am being PFB and be handed a grip, but honestly had I have heard the word 'ta' being used at nursery when we looked around I would have thought twice about sending him there.

I haven't read all the replies, but I also didn't like it when our nanny started teaching DD to say ta. But then I had a word with myself, and came to the conclusion that it was better she was saying SOMETHING for thank you (and FYI, in my case, not saying ta WAS a snobbery thing.) Now she's 2, she says "kyoo", and the ta thing is practically gone. I think all early years professionals do it, to teach the principle, and when my nanny does it with DS I won't raise an eyebrow. I'm very glad I said nothing at the time.

I totally agree with your rage 'ta' really makes me see red. My children both said ank oo until they could say thank you. I work in a nursery and we wouldn't dream of saying 'ta' to the children. As you said we say thank you and they give us their interpretation of it. If it was me I would speak to them.

I hate the word belly. Nothing Northern/Southern/middle/working class about it - it just conjures up a horrible image of a huge fat wobbly stomach.

I think an adult "ta" that's just short for thank you is very different from what people seem to try to teach small children though. That's no different from "cheers" or "thanks".

It's the whole "taaaaaaaaa??" thing with the rising intonation when they're trying to get the child to give them something that's grating.

ditto with belly, just hate the word. Don't see why you would use it instead of tummy.

The other thing to remember with the ta thing is that, if you enforce the thank you thing early on, they can go through a phase of saying what sounds like "fuck you vewy much" when kindly people pass them things in waitrose. Perhaps ta is the least worse option for that 1-2 y old age.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/04/2015 20:44

I actually like the word "belly"; it's kind of earthy and real. "Tummy" is so.....mimsy.

MrsFlannel · 11/04/2015 21:47

Then say abdomen...belly sounds idiotic.

UncertainSmile · 11/04/2015 21:56

Absolutely nothing wrong with the word 'belly'
