I have nothing against the SNP but they have (obviously) got their own agenda.

I want the next government to put the UK first not Scotland.

YANBU, OP. The very thought of it makes my stomach turn.

AlphaBravoHenryFoxtons · 09/04/2015 18:07

Nicola Sturgeon isn't even a candidate at the forthcoming Westminster election.

Hamiltoes · 09/04/2015 18:53

It is Fundamentally wrong that a party that the vast majority of the UK CAN'T vote for, could have such power. That is not a democracy - at all. Tens of millions of people being governed by a party they can't vote for! How can anyone think this is a good thing, and progressive politics. Reverse this and put a party in charge of the UK that Scots can't (not one they choose not to) for and all hell would break lose.

But they won't be in charge of the UK? They will be representing their constituents in westminster the same as the MP each english seat will be representing them.

I can't vote PC because I don't live in wales, but I don't think that means they shouldn't hold any say at westminster if the people of wales decide to make them their elected representatives. Isn't that what democracy is?

I can't vote UKIP in my constituancy, I don't see an uproar because I doubt very many people would want to vote for them anyway! And i've never known anyone to cause an uproar about not being able to vote for a party they don't want to vote for anyway Hmm

We are getting our own section on Mumsnet now....no end to our world domination.......

Hamiltoes · 09/04/2015 19:01

cleanmyhouse I'd go even further to say that any time I've heard Nicola talk about that issue shes always made her stance pretty clear, if its an english vote that means absolutely nothing to Scotland then they won't vote. If it does, then they will. I think the example she gave was say the NHS, descisions made at WM directly affect the budget Scotland gets to run its own NHS, so of course if they vote on selling half of NHS England off, they're going to vote against it because that would be their funding halfed!

Made sense to me.

UnoPan · 09/04/2015 19:05

It's not much of a debate really, is it? Labour supported by SNP where necessary. OR Tory supported by UKIP...

The obvious additional benefit is that Hate Kopkins promises to leave the UK if Labour get to no10. See, it's a win-win for us all.

DamnBamboo · 09/04/2015 19:19

If they form a coalition (unlikely) or work on a vote by vote basis, then they will have undue influence over the rest of the UK.

DamnBamboo · 09/04/2015 19:21

Labour won't win.
You will see a Tory/Lib Dem co-alition or perhaps Tory/NI party coalition in power. The latter of these is comparable to my views on a labour/SNP effort.

UnoPan · 09/04/2015 19:23

Well the latest Survation poll has Labour at 35% and Tory at 31% - enough for PM. And Milliband leads Cameron for the first time.

DamnBamboo · 09/04/2015 19:25

To be fair, predicting an election win is a mugs game - unless it's blindingly obvious, which this one isn't!

All the polls differ quite substantially...which one to believe?

Meow75 · 09/04/2015 19:27

The worst thing about the Labour party is the succession of leaders that there have been in my adult life (I'm nearly 40). The current one just makes me want to Envy

DamnBamboo · 09/04/2015 19:27

I live in a true blue area too, my vote won't make a massive difference!
Although I am genuinely undecided.
I so want to vote labour...but...but... the though of NS for DPM either formally (unlikely) or otherwise!

No no! Just no !

UnoPan · 09/04/2015 19:37

The polls aren't differing that much, and certainly with better-informed research they are getting pretty much accurate in the past few years.

It's a mark of how much Tories are scared of Labour and Milliband that a guidance/campaigning paper revealed on SkyNews today focuses on Milliband (99 refs) and tries to bypass Cameron. (10 refs.) Not a document demonstrating confidence in their leader.

UnoPan · 09/04/2015 19:39

tbh I'm not sure the FM of Scotland can also be the DPM, constitutionally.

Christinayangstwistedsister · 09/04/2015 19:42

The thought of either Milliband or Cameron makes me scream no no no!

Hamiltoes · 09/04/2015 19:50

If they form a coalition (unlikely) or work on a vote by vote basis, then they will have undue influence over the rest of the UK.

No, they will have the same influence any party democratically voted for by their constituents would have with equal numbers of seats. If the whole of the north voted green, would you be saying they had undue influence over the UK because the whole of Scotland, Wales, and the south of England voted tory?? Hmm

HirplesWithHaggis · 09/04/2015 19:50

Nicola isn't a WM MP (and won't be) so no, she can't be Deputy PM. Alex Salmond, though... Grin

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 09/04/2015 19:52

Of course she can't Uno. She's not even standing for Westminster.

DamnBamboo · 09/04/2015 19:54

No, they will have the same influence any party democratically voted for by their constituents would have with equal numbers of seats. If the whole of the north voted green, would you be saying they had undue influence over the UK because the whole of Scotland, Wales, and the south of England voted tory??

No I wouldn't be saying that, because I can vote Green if I want. I can't however vote SNP. And neither can anybody else in England, Wales or NI.

UnoPan · 09/04/2015 19:54

On the 'undue influence' factor, one could argue that the LibDems had undue influence in the past 5 years.
Except they obviously didn't.Grin

DamnBamboo · 09/04/2015 19:57

It's really not hard. The SNP are based solely in Scotland! They do not deserve a prominent place in the politics which governs the whole union! You know... the rest of the UK! The bit they've been trying to dump and will continue to do so!

DamnBamboo · 09/04/2015 19:57

Hirples am laughing too! Can you even imagine Grin

YesILikeItToo · 09/04/2015 19:59

Bamboo! You can only vote green in seats where a green candidate stands! Small parties often don't put up a candidate for every seat. Green might be a bit past this stage now, I don't know, but I really feel that you need to let go of the idea that a constituency can only choose to be represented by a member of a party that every other constituency has given consideration to!

DamnBamboo · 09/04/2015 20:00

Except they obviously didn't Grin

Nick Clegg and Danny would do their best to disagree! (I don't)

YesILikeItToo · 09/04/2015 20:00

Guys, that's not funny. That's what we're talking about.
