To think 60 is old aged

And 35 Middle aged?

OP posts:
ifgrandmahadawilly · 07/04/2015 18:31

YABU. I think it absolutely depends on the person. I know 60 year olds that I would say were old and I know 70 year olds I would say weren't.

I think it depends on attitudes / outlook / lifestyle / health etc.

I think middle age is more like 40ish really but I don't think people start acting / seeming 'middle aged' until they are in their fifties these days.

Andrewofgg · 07/04/2015 18:33

My DM was 70 when she keeled over and died at home.

My DSF was 79 when he took a fifteen-mile walk - then collapsed the next morning with a stroke and never recovered consciousness before he died five days later.

And that, my friends, is the way to go.

Totality22 · 07/04/2015 18:33

Fuck me if 35 is middle aged sobs as 35th birthday approaches

drbonnieblossman · 07/04/2015 18:35

Sexist? Nope, still not sure how it's sexist!

My parents are late sixties and I never think of them as old. I know there's probably an official answer, as in half the av life expectancy but really it's how you feel and your health. Healthy relationships, good lifestyle.

noddyholder · 07/04/2015 18:35

I am 49 and I feel 'wise' but not middle aged although according to this I am

Nanny0gg · 07/04/2015 18:37

Is the OP still having their afternoon nap?

I wish they'd come back with a better definition of middle-aged and old than just a number.

Fairenuff · 07/04/2015 18:40

Fuck me if 35 is middle aged

Don't worry, it will all be behind you by the time you are 46 and too old to be middle aged Grin

Husbanddoestheironing · 07/04/2015 18:45

'Old aged' is always a lot older than me. However old I am.

Feminine · 07/04/2015 18:49

What a stupid thread.
Done purposefully to wind people up.
And actually hurt

DoorsAndWater · 07/04/2015 18:49

My mum has recently died and she was exactly 60 and no I absolutely do not consider her 'old' in fact I would say she was far too bloody 'young'

Weebirdie · 07/04/2015 18:53

Jesus, Im 57 and no where near being old.

And I look at my birth father who's 83 and he's not old either.

If you still have your health and/or your spirit age really is just an number.

Well of you're a kid it's old. Assuming you're not a kid then it's a little ridiculous IMO to suggest that 35 is middle aged.

wheresmyAga · 07/04/2015 18:58

AFAI'm concerned, 'old age' is anyone who's at least 20 years older than me (I'm 50 still young). The goal posts keep shifting Smile

Weebirdie · 07/04/2015 18:59

Doors, I so understand you. My mum died at the age I am now and its never been more unreal even though it was 15 years ago.

DoorsAndWater · 07/04/2015 19:00

Thank you Maryz

IsadoraQuagmire · 07/04/2015 19:00

I wouldn't think of anyone as being "old" until they were over 85. If I used the expression "middle aged" (which I don't, because I don't like it) I'd probably be meaning someone in their mid 60s and over.
I'll be 19 this year incidentally, so it's nothing to do with nearing that age myself...Smile

DoorsAndWater · 07/04/2015 19:01

Thanks Wee all I hear is '60 - its no age' and no it really isn't

Floisme · 07/04/2015 19:04

Well excuse my sense of humour failure but this is shaping up to be the most ageist thread I've ever seen on Mumsnet - which is really saying something. And I'm not talking about the op.

Is anyone going to explain why they find the words 'old' and 'middle aged' so offensive?

Weebirdie · 07/04/2015 19:14

Who has said they find the words offensive?

Weebirdie · 07/04/2015 19:16

Or perhaps that should be who has said they find being middle aged or old offensive?

Floisme · 07/04/2015 19:20

Who has said they find the words offensive?

Are we on the same thread? Grin Look at all the posters expressing outrage at the idea that they might be considered old or middle aged! Why?

HagOtheNorth · 07/04/2015 19:21
Grin
Weebirdie · 07/04/2015 19:26

I dont think they find it offensive.

I think they just find the notion of the thread ridiculous.

Floisme · 07/04/2015 19:28

Well we'll have to disagree on that. There's some massive denial going on here that's for sure Grin
