OP posts:
Snottybiyatch · 07/04/2015 17:40

Grin Dowser

I put it down to the fact that when I was younger I was making love to a bloody callow wet nelly (husband #1) who seriously and literally didn't know his (or my) arse from his elbow. Husband #2 is a mature man. Nuff said!!

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/04/2015 17:40

I think people used to be old at 60, but outlooks, general health and lifestyles have changed that.

BitOutOfPractice · 07/04/2015 17:41

I agree with the poster who said that if someone you loved died at 60 you would think you and they had been robbed. It's not old at all.

I am well into midde aged by your definition OP and I say "fuck that attitude for a game of soldiers" Grin

trappedinsuburbia · 07/04/2015 17:43

I hope not !! Im 39 but most people think im about 30, although there are some people my age that look older than my mum.
I had my kids quite late as well, youngest not yet 2 which helps keep me fit. I actually feel recently ive really come into my own and am at my prime, so maybe yes then i am middle aged although i wouldnt like to be called that.

thornrose · 07/04/2015 17:44

Is this another drop the bomb and run thread? OP, join in the discussion why don't you?

0-30 young
30-60 middle aged
60- 90 old
90+ bonus

Nothing wrong with being older, or middle aged.

Snottybiyatch · 07/04/2015 17:46

Is this another drop the bomb and run thread?

Possibly, or maybe a lazy journalist doing some auto-research or more likely a GCSE kiddie taking a short cut to his/her PHSE homework>

Sagethyme · 07/04/2015 17:47

Given that most of us will have to work to 67 i dont consider 60 old age...! But as others have said depends on mental and physical health! I know a very spirtly 90 year old who seems much younger than me (i'm in my 40s!)

FenellaFellorick · 07/04/2015 17:47

Grin nice maths, maryz.

Nothing at all wrong with being either middle aged or old anyway. We need to move away from this ageist idea that there is somehow something bad about getting old and that being middle aged or older is an insult. It bloody isn't! Getting older is a great thing. Maturity, wisdom, life experience. Sod youth, I say! Grin

Thisishowyoudisappear · 07/04/2015 17:48

YABU! My DPs and PILs are all in their 70s now, my PILs are probably the healthiest people I know and very energetic. You can live a long time past 60 (one of my grandparents lived to 104 and was in pretty good health until a few weeks before dying). I don't see much real benefit to categorising people in age groups. I do refer to the older generation of my family as the crumblies, but I don't think I would if they weren't so fit and healthy!

Sallystyle · 07/04/2015 17:49

My mum is 59.

She could never be described as old.

IMO 70 is old.

MyArksNotReady · 07/04/2015 17:49

I thought I was middle aged. It seems I am ancient by some of these posts because my health is poor. Hmm

mumeeee · 07/04/2015 17:49

YABU of course 60 isn't old age
I'm 58:and still count myself as middle age. I don't feel anywhere near being old. I still work 30 hours a week in an active job. I have friends in their 60's who still work and lead active lives

SpringBreaker · 07/04/2015 17:49

Hahaha I'm 46, my partner is 32 and people usually guess my age as being mid 30's. I definitely don't look or feel middle aged and don't plan on it for a long time yet!!

ginslinger · 07/04/2015 17:51

Oh fuck off with old at 60 -

Pyjamaschocolateandwine · 07/04/2015 17:51

music I remember as a 18 year old student nurse the old people used to tell me they felt just as young as me but the mirror and body lied.

I used to laugh. Didn't get it.

Get it now.

MiniTheMinx · 07/04/2015 17:52

Musicaltheatremum or even just let it pass me by, today I am 19.

I think having a good positive mental attitude keeps people young. I have known people who have improved with age. I also wonder why we have this obsession with ensuring we age gracefully, I intend to age disgracefully and have as much fun doing it as possible.

I shall trade in DP and sell up at 80, then I shall decamp to the south of France with a toy boy Wink to drink shampoo and blow the rest playing blackjack.

Sallystyle · 07/04/2015 17:53

My dh's granddad is in his late 70's and he is as fit as a fiddle and has a better social life than me. I never think of him as old.

My dh's other grandparents I would describe as old due to their failing health and general outlook.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 07/04/2015 17:54

My granny passed away last week at age 89, that is old aged, my DM is mid fifties, that is middle aged and im in my late 30's so still young Grin. i would say about 50 is middle aged nowadays as more people live well into their 90s. I was looking at a pic of my grandad who passed in his early 50's in the 80's, my dad is in his early 50's and he looked much younger than my grandad who was grey with an much older looking face but had had a much harder life down the pits at 14 and from a very poor background so probably had a lot more stress

Fairenuff · 07/04/2015 17:55

Average life expectancy is about 80 years old.

So 40 would be middle aged.

Actually 35-45 is the middle age bracket depending on how long you eventually live.

leedy · 07/04/2015 17:55

"30-60 middle aged"

Bloody hell, when I was 30 I was still clubbing/drinking people under the table/touring with a band, and not (as far as I remember) in a "tragic old person trying to be young" sort of way. Doesn't that span pretty much cover everything from prime childbearing years, prime working years, the menopause....?

I am 42 now and still pretty sure I'm not middle-aged. I will grudgingly concede middle age once I'm menopausal. Possibly

Fairylea · 07/04/2015 17:56

Middle aged at 35?! No way!

I'm 35 this year and I still consider myself young. I'm not even sure what I want to do when I grow up yet (stashes 2 dc in the cupboard in denial).

I definitely don't feel any different or dress any different to I did when I was early 20s.

MagentaOeuflon · 07/04/2015 17:56

I have so many much older, incredibly active, healthy and busy relatives that I now think of "old" as being 80+.

leedy · 07/04/2015 17:58

I think there's a difference between "middle aged" as in purely "around the middle of your life span" and "middle aged" with all the social connotations around it (increasing conservatism, abandonment of fashion and "young people's music", slippers, complaining about "the youth of today", buying of "collectables" from Sunday supplements, etc.). I am probably around the former, pretty sure I'm not the latter.
