YANBU.. poor you OP Flowers

WashingUpFairy · 07/04/2015 15:59

Ooer...do you HAVE to go to the whole thing?

WorraLiberty · 07/04/2015 15:59

Aibu and will it actually be lovely??

How would we know? Grin

It does sound like a lot of faff.

What sort of wedding is it?

sosix · 07/04/2015 15:59

Nightmare! You are busy of course.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/04/2015 15:59

That depends... On a pacific island and the B and G are paying for scuba diving - lovely. In Croydon and you are stuck in a room for three day - possibly not lovely.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/04/2015 15:59

You could always just go to part of it.

imonkey · 07/04/2015 16:00

Oh hell no! YANBU!

SwedishEdith · 07/04/2015 16:01

Just decide which part you want to go to and just go to that. There's no obligation to spend a whole weekend at someone's wedding.

Thurlow · 07/04/2015 16:03

Could be lovely! We went to an all weekend wedding that was hours away, it was essentially one massive house party with loads of friends we hadn't seen for a long time. I liked having breakfast with everyone as well as going to the wedding.

Without any details this is just a 'how long is a piece of string' question Grin

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 07/04/2015 16:05

I love a wedding, when is it?

WashingUpFairy · 07/04/2015 16:06

Could be fun, like a Dothraki wedding!

Bunbaker · 07/04/2015 16:11

I don't understand the MN hatred of weddings. Maybe it's because I haven't been to many - small family and everyone I know is already married, or maybe it is because none of the weddings I have been to have been bridezilla affairs.

I love weddings.

Why is this wedding an all weekend affair?

ApplesTheHare · 07/04/2015 16:13

I'm currently trying to convince myself it will be loads of fun!Grin

Should have said we have to go to all of it as DH is best man. It will be outdoorsy - spontaneous game of giant jenga by the lake, anybody?? - and in October. I think we'll be expected to camp but I'm not so keen as our dd will be 1. Our friends are usually very reasonable so I'm hoping they don't mind if we grab a hotel room!?

ApplesTheHare · 07/04/2015 16:16

Bunbaker I usually LOVE weddings too, but a whole weekend just seems a bit much for two hundred people who've never really met (they have thousands of friends from very different walks of life) to spend together.

There is no particular reason it's weekend that I know of. Don't get me wrong, I am really grateful for the invite and I'm sure the first 24 hours will be loads of fun, just not sure about the rest!

OP posts:
Thurlow · 07/04/2015 16:17

Ah, now a whole weekend a) in a tent and b) with a 1 year old sounds far less fun!

You stay in a hotel, let your DH camp!

DidoTheDodo · 07/04/2015 16:19

it sounds utterly ghastly (party pooper alert!).
Camping in October? Jenga by a lake?
Nooooooo..... Grin

FluffyMcnuffy · 07/04/2015 16:19

It's an invitation not a summons Wink.

If you don't like it don't go.

Bunbaker · 07/04/2015 16:20

I must admit it doesn't sound much like fun. Can't you just attend the ceremony and the reception?

ApplesTheHare · 07/04/2015 16:22

Haha Fluffy, not an option without sounding like an ungrateful bint and ignoring 35 years of friendship, unfortunately. I appreciate the invite and what DH means to the groom.

I think that's why I feel a bit 'meh' about it though. I'm awful when I feel like I haven't got a choice!

OP posts:
candidkate · 07/04/2015 16:22

Only go to what suits you ... I wouldn't want my friends to not have fun. Just go for the ceremony. Have DH go to the festivities...if he is the best man it may be hurtful if he doesn't turn up...however his wife can join him on the actual day of the wedding! Sounds fair x

ApplesTheHare · 07/04/2015 16:23

Bunbaker with DH as best man we're expected at all of it and more!

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 07/04/2015 16:28

If you have a one year old in tow I'm sure you can use nap time and what have you as an excuse to get out of some of the "festivities". I take it the couple don't have any children?

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 07/04/2015 16:28

We had one Blush

We had moved to the U.S. and came back for our wedding so hired a hotel for 80 of our closest friends Grin to stay at for a couple of nights.

Buffet dinner and free bar on Friday night, then the wedding on Saturday. Gave us time to catch up with everyone before we went off on honeymoon and back to New York.

skinoncustard · 07/04/2015 16:49

I know someone who's family member had a wedding like that. Sounded great, all mucking in, very relaxed, food and drink all provided , meeting loads of old friends.

The reality was , many of the old friends were different now they were no longer students / had partners/ children etc. people's ideas of ' mucking in ' varied from doing lots to help - to doing nothing. The food and drink ran out very very quickly, as in , the afternoon of day one. ( they were miles from a shop) A cold tent, soggy underfoot. A lot of people left on day 1 . Those that stayed were mainly family trying to make the best of a bad lot , but tempers frayed the colder and hungrier they got.

Something along those lines might work in a country where you can depend on the weather, but GB in October!!!!! No thanks .

Skiptonlass · 07/04/2015 17:15

Go, but get a hotel/cottage. I've camped for weddings and it's crap.

I repeat : not in a tent.
