AIBU to find it disgusting that gypsies have taken over a school playground

Adizzylass2014 · 04/04/2015 22:17

whilst attending my best friends wedding today in a little village I was horrified to see that gypsies had taken over the school playground. There was rubbish all over the floor, children and dogs running all over the place and scantily clad women puffing away.
why a school playground, these people have no morals. The poor caretaker is going to have his work cut out for him as there was at least 15 caravans! Angry

Im not sure why people are annoyed with me, it has been discussed on here that travellers have a problem with using their caravan toilets due to hygiene, which is why excretions are left behind? Certainly the vehicles are not generally taxed and insured as they have no permanent addresses (so why would they?) When Travellers abide by the law, I don't see that there is a problem, but this thread has started by the poster that says Travellers have not obeyed the law. I don't have the slightest problem with Travellers that obey the law, lets have a list of those that do?

ResurrectAndEatShitChoc · 05/04/2015 18:52

Stop being a dick.

You are asking travellers why some travellers don't abide by the law.

It's like someone asking me why do some white women not abide by the law?

How the fuck should I know?!

landrover · 05/04/2015 18:53

However I am off to watch the tv, so you can all relax and enjoy your further chats about Law abiding travellers!!!! (whoever they are!)

expatinscotland · 05/04/2015 18:53

This was becoming an interesting discussion . . . then landrover showed up.

Christinayangstwistedsister · 05/04/2015 18:54

Don't let the door slam behind you...

WindYourBobbinUp · 05/04/2015 18:55

land rover RTFT we've already answered your questions. I'm off to fill in my tax return now anyway (actually I'm not but only because I'm on PAYE Grin )

paxtecum · 05/04/2015 18:55

Changing the subject away from Landrover, there is a great Romany Museum in Spalding run by Gordon Boswell and his wife.

I had a lovely afternoon there last year learning a little bit about Romanys.

I find this thread so depressing. It seems the world has many bigots.

Lagoonablue · 05/04/2015 18:58

This thread is fascinating. The traveller lifestyle is so different, so 'other ' to the norm that people are always going to have a problem with it. Not sure what the answer is. Those people who preach tolerance and anti-racism.....what would you feel honestly if a group of travellers parked their caravans in your street and settled down for a few months? Honestly? That is the test of your tolerance.

I was on a work anti racism course and of all the minority groups travellers and gypsies was the one which generated most discussion. The most left wing, tolerant anti racists wouldn't be able to accept a gypsy camp on their doorstep. At least they are being honest I suppose.

SmillasSenseOfSnow · 05/04/2015 19:01

What about your mum and dad and your Uncle Nigel and Aunt Dora who all pay tradesmen cash in hand instead of following tax regulations, landrover? Why do our laws not apply to them?

Christinayangstwistedsister · 05/04/2015 19:01

Can I ask any of the travelers on here, how do you feel about programmes such as Big fat gypsy wedding?

dejarderoncar · 05/04/2015 19:02

I don't wish to get involved in the debate regarding unofficial sites, rubbish, filth, travellers' way of life etc, as I live abroad, except to say that the enormous denial of many posters lived experiences throughout this thread seems to be something that would not be tolerated elsewhere on MN.

And in my opinión the thread has ended up at times resembling victim blaming, i.e 'tough you don't like what happened to you, individual poster, but you (ALL of you non travellers) are always blaming travellers for everything, so of course they are going to give you the finger, it's all your own fault.

'I would also like to say that perhaps the posters who identify as Irish travellers, Gipsies or Roma, instead of, as several of you say you do, hiding your identity in real life, for fear of reprisal or discrimination, why not take an idea from gay activists over the past fifty years.

Yes, we had to put up with a load of shit, but eventually, we became visible through our whole range, and not just raging queens, dykes and perverts who molested kids and and only had sex in toilets.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/04/2015 19:04

Those people who preach tolerance and anti-racism.....what would you feel honestly if a group of travellers parked their caravans in your street and settled down for a few months?

I have a park across the road. If travellers moved in there I would have worries as all the horrible stories I read.on MN would come to mind. If they then proceeded to utterly trash the place I, would of course be utterly pissed off.

If a planning application went in for a travellers site nearby, assuming all bases were covered (sanitation/rubbish etc) I would not object.

But in the first example, travellers would generally only move into the park if they had no where else to go. As has been said, there are not enough sites for all of the travellers - this is the real issue.

Psipsina · 05/04/2015 19:11

its about the fact that all land now belongs to somebody so they have nowhere they can legitimately go.

The world is crowded. It has moved on. People have bought bits of land, to live on or to use. What do you expect the world to do about this? Yes it was free to live where you wanted to in the good old days, when large swathes of countryside were unoccupied and maybe even unknown, but now, those places are hard to find and everyone likes to use them, not just gypsies/Roma/travellers. That means sharing.

Not taking over, making a fecking mess, then buggering off leaving it for others to clear up.

That's the most selfish thing I can think of. We all have to share the world and compromise on our idealism and ultimate desires.

I love the idea of living free of constraints of society but it would be really fucking selfish of me to expect everyone else to support that. Like it or not we all have to think of others.

And what did the children at this school do to deserve having their playground screwed over?

IFinishedTheBiscuits · 05/04/2015 19:12

In our area, the gypsies who had lived side by side with settled communities for decades were displaced by Irish travellers who moved in en masse and intimidated the gypsies until they all moved out.

SmillasSenseOfSnow · 05/04/2015 19:13

The issue with that, dejar, is that being gay openly involves 'doing gay things' in public (= doing things that can identify you as gay).

If someone of Romany Gypsy/Irish Traveller decent no longer lives a nomadic lifestyle, there's no identifying behaviour and there's also no way for it to come up in most situations without a totally weird and unnecessary conversation.

I never know to what degree I should identify with the group. I am only ethnically part Romany Gypsy. My grandfather was adopted and raised by non-gypsies, as far as I am aware, so there's zero cultural heritage. The only thing passed on is some facial structure/complexion markers that most people wouldn't recognise as being Roma things anyway. Of course I'm still insulted by ridiculous generalisations that imply some kind of innate defect.

Even someone who was raised in a nomadic lifestyle, who is settled but still has strong connections to the Romany community - what are they supposed to do? 'Come out' and do their supermarket shopping/other random activity in a 'gypsy' way? Procure a horse and cart?

WindYourBobbinUp · 05/04/2015 19:13

Christina I watched some of the first series and there was one Romany featured. I don't watch it now but think it's more focused on Irish travellers, however its called gypsy wedding so people think its about us (Romany)
How I feel could be summed up by this: assuming you're white British, imagine the ONLY show on TV about your culture was Jeremy Kyle and you'll get the idea.

dejarder you make a good point, the minority (who shit on slides and whatever) do need balancing out with us boring office worker types

paxtecum · 05/04/2015 19:15

We had New Age travellers 200 yards down the road a few years ago.
They were all fine.

Some Gypsys bought a field about 500 yards from me, put drains in, moved in applied for planning permission which was rejected because the field may flood. Seven years later the field has not flooded.
Gypsys had to move off the land they had bought.

In the meantime we have every other field being built on, but that's ok because they won't be Gypsys.

Christinayangstwistedsister · 05/04/2015 19:15

Wind

Thanks for answering, Thought as much

Sexyhouseslippers · 05/04/2015 19:17

Why are people being labelled as 'racist' for sharing their experience s. This is not just an issue in the UK it is also a huge problem in western and Eastern Europe.

bigfam · 05/04/2015 19:17

assuming you're white British, imagine the ONLY show on TV about your culture was Jeremy Kyle and you'll get the idea.
Oh, now that's a good one!

ResurrectAndEatShitChoc · 05/04/2015 19:18

Can't be any worse than the druggie poss head, tractor stealing, always fighting, needle chucking scrotes that lived in an house a few doors up from me.

If they were like the lads I meet last week, I'd be joining them Grin Or the ones at the fair, they seed a right laugh.

Dickheads are around no matter the race or anything. So I wouldn't think anything til I had a reason to

I have drug dealers, weed growers, car twok-ers etc living on this estate. I doubt travellers would even think about pitching up here Grin

paxtecum · 05/04/2015 19:21

Sexy, there was a comment earlier in the thread saying that Gypsys were sewer rats.
The post has since been removed.

That is quote a sweeping fascist statement.

paxtecum · 05/04/2015 19:23

Oh, racist not fascist.

morethanpotatoprints · 05/04/2015 19:24

I am distanced from my romany family, in fact only found them a few years ago.
The whole family including my gps set up several caravans, a bungalow or two on some ground they bought many years ago.
I found it quite funny that in all that time they didn't travel after centuries of travelling and living in vardo's, stranger still that even though i didn't know my romany roots had travelled throughout my late teens and twenties Grin

Sexyhouseslippers · 05/04/2015 19:28

paxtecum

That post was rude and prejudice however other people are being labelled as racist when they've done nothing wrong.
