To humanely squash massive spiders

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 02/04/2015 22:25

They're huge, they're in my house, and I'm terrified of them. 3 in 2 weeks. Big ones.

I love animals, I feel really guilty but I just can't live with them. They're massive and they're really unusually fast and I'm constantly on edge in my own home.

So AIBU to squash and remove?

(I'm only squashing because DH away and I am SO scared that leaving them to go through the house to pop up another day is scarier than getting near enough to squash. Although it still takes about half an hour to work up to it)

I can't kill spiders. I go mad when my DP kills flies as I cant watch them squirming once sprayed... but strangely, I eat all meats!

But when an animal is killed for meat it is for the reason of providing food. When a fly or spider is killed it is just because you find it annoying or because you don't like the way it looks. And I say that as a vegetarian.

They're all over it. There's an open hatch to the roof space so I'm wondering if they could be coming through there? But I don't know how they've gotten so big, or why they're coming out and being so fast now. It makes me feel nauseous even writing this.

Oh poor thing. When dh was away there was a facing ginormous one in the bath. I had to get a neighbour to kill it. But the next day I still couldn't remove the corpse. Had to call a friend on their way to work to come and flush it. I felt so ill. It was awful. I know you must be feeling terrible.
Get fil to help. And then get some "spider x" spray. You can spray it round windows etc, and places where they might come in. And you can also use it in an emergency assassination situation.

Really??? We ran out of oil last week and it was cold and now the heatings back on and it's a bit too warm. It's all mega insulated with underfloor heating.

I'm off to turn it all down now!

I have a plug in which is supposed to repel them but I daren't put it in as it flushes them all out.

Being phobic is not the same as being annoyed. How ignorant some ppl can be.

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 03/04/2015 20:31

I'm sitting here sweating in a t shirt and moaning about the oil bill and wondering why the place is full of S's. What a moron.

Heatings going off!

Not everyone who kills spiders is phobic. Killing something because you don't like it is ignorant.

UncertainSmile · 03/04/2015 21:04

They're house spiders though, they'd be in the house whether it was hot or cold. The loft hatch has to a suspect though.

UncertainSmile · 03/04/2015 21:05

I kill them on sight. I'm phobic, and I can't have them loose.

Hoppinggreen · 03/04/2015 21:35

We have a rule in this house - you kill it you eat it!!

beanlovesb · 03/04/2015 22:02

oh wizard I feel so sorry for you :( do you have hair catcher things in your plug holes? I've found that since I had them we get less big fuckers. plugholes are one of their favourite entry routes. Get your loft entry covered asap I'd say. Fortunately my FIL is a builder and humours my phobia and has tried to fill in every crack and crevice in my bathroom and airing cupboard, could you consider getting someone in to do the same? and stock up on the Raid!

oh and proper lol'd at your "oh get fucked" comment! here here! A phobia is not "silly". It's a genuine psychological uncontrolable traumatic phenomenon. I'd love to be able to be so blasé about spiders but I can't be. I can bear rats, cockroaches, mice, moths etc etc but when it comes to spiders I get the fear. I'm guessing that op you are the same

daisychain01 · 03/04/2015 22:10

If you wish to live and thrive,

Let the spider run alive.

How anyone can kill a creature who weaves beautiful webs and does nobody any harm is beyond me.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 03/04/2015 22:23

killing something because you dont like it is ignorant
No it isn't.
It could be described as callous or unkind.
But it's not ignorant.
What is ignorant (and, btw, also unkind) is to dismiss a phobia as "silly" and as a "dislike". That has been a common theme on this thread.

RedRugNoniMouldiesEtc · 03/04/2015 22:27

It's not unusual in new builds, they've all been displaced during the building work and are looking for new homes. You'll probably see lots more frogs, mice etc too (although not in the house!)

Hopefully they'll settle soon op.

GraysAnalogy · 03/04/2015 22:29

I think it's quite clear though that a lot of people who claim to have phobias actually don't though amanda

TheRealAmandaClarke · 03/04/2015 22:55

Shit. Just bought a new build. Moving in a few weeks.
Will go armed with "Spider X"

Well that might be true too grays

maliaki · 04/04/2015 09:10

My grant swears by eucalyptus oil and her plants being a natural repellent. She hates spiders and hasn't seen one since she started using those. I may get her one of those catchers though just in case, she can't stand being near them.

Might be worth a try op? For some reason loft spiders can get massive! Not sure why.

ragged · 04/04/2015 09:39

They're fast because you're trying to kill them. Confused

HazelBite · 04/04/2015 09:50

Spiders make webs that catches flies, flies are unhygenic (they sit on shit) I know who I would rather have in my home.

maliaki · 04/04/2015 10:04

They also get wasps, which are horrible things.

UncertainSmile · 04/04/2015 10:51

If I won the lottery I'd have every nook and cranny filled in, and make the house 'spider proof'

TheRealAmandaClarke · 04/04/2015 10:59

And people do know that a phobia is a severe irrational fear right?
all the "pretty webs Hmm, catching flies, not harmful to us" hyperbole is about effective in dispelling a phobia as treacle is in getting rid of wasps.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 04/04/2015 10:59

Good ideasmile

Trinpy · 04/04/2015 11:31

Pull out all furniture and hoover behind it once a week. We do this and rarely get spiders (or any other creepy crawlies). Spider killing sprays work very slowly and you will feel awful afterwards.

I have a phobia of spiders but don't want to get help to cure it because if it worked then I would be ok with touching spiders and I don't want to do that because I'm scared of spiders. Basically, I'm too scared of spiders to want to not be scared of spiders .
