To humanely squash massive spiders

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 02/04/2015 22:25

They're huge, they're in my house, and I'm terrified of them. 3 in 2 weeks. Big ones.

I love animals, I feel really guilty but I just can't live with them. They're massive and they're really unusually fast and I'm constantly on edge in my own home.

So AIBU to squash and remove?

(I'm only squashing because DH away and I am SO scared that leaving them to go through the house to pop up another day is scarier than getting near enough to squash. Although it still takes about half an hour to work up to it)

I trust that all you hug-a-spider types are vegetarians?

Well I am, I can't speak for all the others here who don't like killing stuff because we don't like the way it looks.

UncertainSmile · 03/04/2015 16:30

It's only a spider; a very primitive form of life. I'd swat a fly, kill a wasp if I perceived it as a threat, so why not a spider?

UncertainSmile · 03/04/2015 16:32

If you had a rat loose in the house, how would you deal with it?

42andGaffaTape · 03/04/2015 16:34

smile I'm vegan - not sure what my eating habits have anything to do wih killing anyone/things. It comes down to respect for other living things. Same reason that I don't pick flower heads or kill arseholes who piss me off.

Pipbin · 03/04/2015 16:39

I don't kill things unless it can be avoided. There is no need to kill a spider or a fly. They are no threat to me.
When I had mice in the house I used humane traps and released them. Mice and rats actually pose a health threat so I would consider using poison if I had tried the other options.
I don't have the right to kill something simply because I don't like it.

Ways to get rid of spider phobias.

grimbletart · 03/04/2015 17:58

I don't mind spiders. I use the Lakeland spider catcher but not for spiders - I can suck up daddy-long-legs with them and put them out. I used to have a terrible phobia about them. Not so much now I know I can catch them in the spider catcher. What I can't do is leave one fluttering about in the room with me. Out it has to go! I'm OK if they are outside as I can move away, but hate being in an enclosed space with them.

Re spiders….why does it seem to be mostly women who can't deal with them? Perhaps it's left over from cavemen times. There you would be, calmly dusting your cave and a great big fucker drops on your head - genetic imprinting I'd call it. Grin

grimbletart · 03/04/2015 18:00

Mind you, my Dad used to a real wuzz with spiders. He would sit in a chair with his legs drawn up while Mum and chased it round the room to put it out.

Yanbu
They are terrifying and revolting.
I cant get close enough to squash them though.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 03/04/2015 18:25

And yes i do have a genuine phobia. Even had therapy. Now i can humanely dispose if small ones but actually start sobbing if theres even a hint there might be a large one near me. Cant look at pictures of them either.

Fucks sake there's another one. I could actually cry.
I've never seen anything like it it's fucking monstrous. A fucking cup literally wouldn't go over it. I've rung FIL who is on his way as there's no way I'm getting within 6 feet of it.

Why are they here!?? Why are they so big and fast?? Please someone tell me, I can't google it as pictures will come up.

I can't kill spiders. I go mad when my DP kills flies as I cant watch them squirming once sprayed... but strangely, I eat all meats!

I'm just one big contradiction Grin

Strange time of year for the big fuckers to be out and about. Do you live in a cottage?

I used to live in a really old cottage and we had quite a few medium sized ones which really bothered me.....but 4 months ago moved into this new build and one of the main things I was looking forward to was leaving the spiders behind! And now here we are, fine for the last few months and then all these which are literally about 4 times the size of the old ones. With big pincer things.

I could literally cry. I daren't go to bed and with a baby and toddler both going through bad sleeping phases, next to no sleep and husband working away, I could really do without this.

OP posts:
UncertainSmile · 03/04/2015 20:23

That's rare in a new build. Are they in a particular room?

ARoomWithoutAView · 03/04/2015 20:25

Oh, wonder if your heating is still on?
They are only in your house in spring because your heating is too high
Keep it higher than needs to be then come August or September in UK they will give birth in your house.
Cut the heating back now, and leave it off until around 7th october
