AIBU to be upset that the school careers advisor suggest my 14yo son join the army?

Genuinely interested to know if I'm over reacting.

DS wants to join the police force. He had been considering going to university before applying, or possibly working after college for a couple of years. However, last week he had an appointment with a careers advisor who said he should think about joining the army first! She told him he'd be more likely to get in with an army background.

TIA

With several family members who are army and all have ptsd after front line service which is horrific for us and them. I'd be reluctant to suggest the army to anyone as a career tbh.

My dd said she wanted to join the police last week. I suggested the military instead. Over here they pay your uni fees you just have to sign up for I think three years.
Both carreers are something to be proud of.

lol purple. Dh got blown up - brain injury and a 20% chance of survival for his luck. He and I would both still recommend a military career. I have ptsd from childbirth - you'd be hard pushed to stop recommending that. (Our dd is more severely brain damaged than her dad).

Oh, houseofnerds - that's a lot to have gone through. Don't know what to say, except you and you family sound incredibly strong and brave, and are very lucky to have each other. Flowers

(Sorry, sounds so crass on a forum. Words can be very easy to write sometimes, but desperately difficult at others).

Very interesting to note, also, that despite what your husband has gone through personally, you still would recommend the armed forces as a career. Some people think it is the work of the devil, and it is great to know from someone first hand that actually, it is not a bad career at all!! Smile

Thanks Evans - we do okay! Sorry - I missed this last week. Flowers

Career advisers always say join up, have since Iwas at school and before ... I'm sure they're actual army personnel "undercover" :-)

I'd recommend the Navy or RAF to my kids if they really wanted to join the forces; not the army, however.
