To only let my children have fresh fruit/yoghurt for breakfast?

Sunshinesunflower · 22/03/2015 21:47

They have plenty of healthy food during the day but I don't really want them thinking the day has to start with them shoving lots of hot food or sugary cereals down themselves.

There is plenty of fruit for variety and just a small amount of plain yoghurt.

Aibu? I have always disliked the concept of breakfast so fruit seems a reasonable compromise.

OP, you really aren't making a hash of things. Your kids get breakfast and it's healthy food. They get a healthy diet through the day. They are clearly loved a d well cared for.

I think this thread has gone wrong because of the greedy thing. You might be hurt if someone said it was greedy to have supper after dinner. Your assertion that we're all a bunch of pigs for eating our muesli or whatever might have rankled a bit. But you're taking care to give your kids a healthy diet and I agree that lots of kids go to school on a bowl of Rice Crispies which are essentially sugary air so no better than fruit and yoghurt. Food threads on this site go a bit crazy. It sounds like you're doing fine. Morning sickness is awful. I hope things get better for you Flowers.

And everything that Lonny said including the hugs.

THEworrywart · 23/03/2015 19:32

I hate it when people call people's eating habits bizarre!

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 23/03/2015 19:38

Evening all,
We have received quite a number of reports about this thread, please could we ask you all to remember that we are here to support each other and make lives easier? Thanks.

Julius02 · 23/03/2015 19:51

OP - I think the important thing is to remember that we are all different. I wake up hungry and can't function without breakfast; DH can happily wait until lunchtime before eating.

If you're children are happy and not complaining about being hungry then all must be well, if they are asking for more or for something else then listen to them. Perhaps some toast as well as the fruit?

NeedsAsockamnesty · 23/03/2015 19:55

sunshine

Is it possible you have undiagnosed hypermesis gravidarum? It's a condition that causes extream sickness and nausea.

I understand and appreacheate from reading the full thread that you have long term issues with food but just because you have historical food related issues does not mean that your exempt from a case of HG.

Things your saying like thoughts of food and the impact of smells as well as upping control levels around food and generally being sicky combined with feelings of uselessness (HG can make you feel suicidial as well) are all things that make me think you may want to raise it with a HCP.

Sallystyle · 23/03/2015 20:08

Ahh op I just want to give you a big huge hug!

I am sorry you are struggling, I am sorry a couple of posters even after reading your update still felt the need to kick you down. They are probably unhappier than you to feel the need to do that.

I don't eat breakfast, I don't believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day (not including children) and I am a big believer in fasting ( again obviously not for children). Fruit and a yoghurt for breakfast really isn't that bad. Of course they should be able to have the choice and it seems like this thread has helped you see that but I really don't think fruit and yoghurt is as bad as some made out at all.

Thanks
millimurphy · 23/03/2015 20:08

Don't call yourself those awful names - you are not. How about you just offer a slice of toast as well to your kids tomorrow and see if they fancy it? Or a bit of cereal - my little one likes those shreddie type things with warm milk. The fruit and yoghurt is lovely - just see if they fancy a bit of something extra. It aint wrong to be hungry after being asleep all those hours - nothing gluttonous about it at all. You sound like you are very hard on yourself - you shouldn't be, especially if you are expecting another little one! Offer your kids a bit something extra and see if they want it.

Sallystyle · 23/03/2015 20:09

Needsasock has a great point.

I had Hg too.

msgrinch · 23/03/2015 20:27

U2 I completely agree. I just want to give the op a big hug.

MrsAidanTurner · 23/03/2015 20:34

Op offering yoghurt and fruit is not a bad thing at all! how many dc go to shcook with no breakfast, of course your doing the right thing, a you are feeding them and b worrying that it is healthy!

ihatelego · 23/03/2015 21:45

have rtft, OP I wouldn't worry too much about your kid's breakfast right now, it's obvious you're doing your best for them and making a lot of effort to give them healthy food which is more than a lot of mum's do to start with so there's no way you're a bad mum and they'd be better off without you.

Try and seek some support for how you're feeling I know you said you've tried avenues before but maybe a fresh chat, a new support group or avenue, even temporary medication would help the way you feel (i know you're pregnant but i've always been told it's safer to take anti depressants than to have those feelings about yourself) Please understand those things aren't true however we're all learning as we go, making mistakes and have down days, we just need to love our DC and do what's best for them and us Flowers

BlueberryWafer · 24/03/2015 08:35

Yoghurt and fruit is a damn site better than coco pops or shreddies that are loaded with sugar (I know fruit and yoghurt have sugar but they're natural sugars). You're doing what you think is best so please don't be so down on yourself.

WayfaringStranger · 24/03/2015 09:12

Whoever mentioned Easter eggs is in my bad books! I have several Easter eggs upstairs hidden for me the kids and it's taking all my willpower not to crack one open. I weaken when I get reminded. Grin

2boys1girl1dog · 24/03/2015 09:27

Only read the 1st few pages-
What on earth is the big hooha!!? Your kids are happy & healthy. Some people eat a lot for breakfast, some don't. some people eat late evening some people don't. You love your kids and feed them healthy food what on earth is the problem? Yoghurt and fruit sounds fine to me. The way people are going on it's like you said you were feeding them a grain of rice each or something!!
We eat quite light in the mornings in the week too, at weekends we eat later and more Smile

MiscellaneousAssortment · 24/03/2015 09:57

Op. Flowers

leedy · 24/03/2015 10:01

Look after yourself, OP, it sounds like you're going through a lot and you're being very hard on yourself.

It's not uncommon for women to get depression or for existing depression to worsen in pregnancy (look up antenatal depression - not as common as PND but just as nasty), so possibly your maternity hospital/healthcare folks will have a mental health team you can talk to?

MoustacheofRonSwanson · 24/03/2015 11:16

Jesus, this seems to have gotten a bit out of hand?

Re breakfast, it's fine you don't like it, but to each their own, so one or other of your kids might like a different breakfast than fruit and yogurt. Maybe something carby like porridge, or something with protein like eggs or sausages. Or both. Maybe with the fruit and yogurt too. Try them with a few things and see what they like/function best on.

ihatelego · 24/03/2015 13:30

wayfaring stranger

hehe not sorry! Grin

Ironfloor · 24/03/2015 14:03

Haven't read all the replies but I smell a troll. Don't want to give them eggs for breakfast because they will smell all day wtf is that?

THEworrywart · 24/03/2015 14:10

Ironfloor you should have read he whole thread before coming to that conclusion.

OP has issues with food especially eggs whilst pregnant.

Sunshinesunflower · 24/03/2015 14:27

Okay.

Personally, I quite like eggs but they smell dreadful and I (again this may just be a personal thing) find they leave a very strong aftertaste. I used to rather enjoy having a McDonald's egg mc muffin years ago when I was working part time at a hospital and was on nights - but I won't have them first thing as that aftertaste they leave is powerful.

Obviously I don't want my child (DD is a baby still) going to school stinking to high heaven and it being remarked on by other children. I don't put hard boiled eggs or other food likely to be a bit smelly in his lunchbox for the same reason. And at the moment eggs do make me feel very sick.

It could be others don't find eggs leave such a strong aftertaste for them but I do.

It isn't so much I have 'issues' with eggs; I just don't want the smell lingering on all day, either in the house or on my child.

I've never known anyone have a 'meal' for breakfast - cereal or a slice of toast (not both) are adequate round here it would seem. Also I know plenty of kids who have a banana in the car on the way to school so frankly I think many of the pompous posts informing me my children will be 'weak' 'hungry' and so on are utter tripe which is another thing I wouldn't feed my children unless they didn't have to breathe on anyone for a few hours at least :)

OP posts:
GotToBeInItToWinIt · 24/03/2015 14:32

Have your children ever come home from school complaining that another child smells of eggs? I've never noticed the smell of eggs on others and never heard anyone else comment on it so I think it may be a particular sensitivity you have to the smell! I've never known a child be bullied because they have egg for breakfast and smell of it.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 24/03/2015 14:34

Although I'm not saying that because I think you should be giving them eggs... If you don't want to give them eggs then don't, they'll live Smile. It was just an observation on the smell of eggs! I might be wrong and you might all tell me you can smell when people have had eggs for breakfast!

Sunshinesunflower · 24/03/2015 14:35

Possibly. I doubt anyone would say 'he/she smells of egg' - be so specific in other words! - but I've certainly noticed food type smells on others. Some people really seem to smell strongly of garlic after eating it; I know it leaves a bit of an odour on everyone but some people do seem particularly prone to it ponging a bit!
