To only let my children have fresh fruit/yoghurt for breakfast?

They have plenty of healthy food during the day but I don't really want them thinking the day has to start with them shoving lots of hot food or sugary cereals down themselves.

There is plenty of fruit for variety and just a small amount of plain yoghurt.

Aibu? I have always disliked the concept of breakfast so fruit seems a reasonable compromise.

I'd be starving if that's all I ate so I think my 2, full of beans toddlers would probably not appreciate that at all!
Mine have a piece of fruit and water (when first get up at 6:30, saying they are hungry and I only have the energy to make tea!)
Then cereal (shreddies/rice crispies/cornflakes) or porridge.
Then toast with peanut butter/jam/Nutella or just butter.

And yes, I'm aware that jam and Nutella aren't the healthiest of options but it's a tiny scrape and not every day.

I think it's unhealthy of you to project your own food issues on your children.

Purpleflamingos · 22/03/2015 21:55

Porridge, weetabix, scrambled eggs, toast, fruit and 'pizza toast' (toast spread with tomato purée with grated cheese melted on under the grill) are everyday options in my house. More than one option is allowed.
School holidays the rules are relaxed.

Eva50 · 22/03/2015 21:55

Does it have to keep them going until lunch time? Mine like berries with plenty yogurt (preferably Greek). But they would have it with nuts and seeds, cheese cubes or an oatcake with peanut butter and would have eggs or porridge some mornings for variation.

Pagwatch · 22/03/2015 21:55

They are growing and decent food eaten in the morning sets them up for the day.

You are being a bit odd tbh.

Cantbelievethisishappening · 22/03/2015 21:56

Oh FFS..... your poor kids.... I feel sorry for them Hmm

SaucyJack · 22/03/2015 21:56

If the Good Lord had wanted us to eat fruit for breakfast, then He wouldn't have invented Marmite.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 22/03/2015 21:56

Some form of egg?

They haven't eaten for 12 hours. They need to get some energy in them for the morning ahead an yoghurt and fruit isn't good enough. How about yoghurt with muesli?

They will probably eat less at lunch if thy have a good breakfast so no need to worry about overeating. They must be starving by lunch

Personally I don't eat breakfast and hae an early lunch but I understand that isn't feasible for children

museumum · 22/03/2015 21:56

Why wouldn't you eat a larger amount when you've just fasted for at least 12 hours? Breakfast is a fantastic concept. Fuels you for the day.
Porridge or poached eggs here.

WorraLiberty · 22/03/2015 21:56

So get them up earlier

How old are they and how do they feel about this?

I haven't eaten breakfast since I was at Primary school but I've always made sure my kids eat, unless they really can't.

Chippednailvarnish · 22/03/2015 21:57

I don't mind at the weekend when they have been up an hour or so but I hate the idea of getting up and eating almost straightaway

But this thread isn't about your breakfasting habits...

Sunshinesunflower · 22/03/2015 21:57

They've never asked for anything else.

Believe me, they have plenty of carbs and protein during the day along with fresh vegetables, grains, fish - they aren't malnourished. I don't think they need them all before 7 Monday to Friday.

Eggs smell revolting; I can 'taste' them in the back of my throat for a while after I've had them even after thorough teeth brushing.

Fruit and yoghurt is a completely insufficient breakfast for a child IMHO. What's wrong with wholemeal bread or porridge if you don't approve of sugary cereals.

Becles · 22/03/2015 21:57

Yes YABU. It's the worst sort of breakfast for a child off to school. High in fast releasing sugars.

Children need slow releasing cars and protein for breakfast. Their concentration levels will be affected and they're likely to flag mid mornings.

Sparklingbrook · 22/03/2015 21:57

Pop Tarts are the way to go I think.

Lulabellarama · 22/03/2015 21:57

Fruit and a small amount of plain yogurt is lacking in sustenance. Add some nuts perhaps? Or have a crumpet/toast with peanut butter or similar too.
I sincerely hope the yogurt is full fat?

SophieandHerSnail · 22/03/2015 21:58

When I have breakfast it's the first food in 12 hours, I don't call that gluttonous.

How old are the kids? Yoghurt & fruit isn't filling enough IMO, I serve it over weetabix or they have fruit compote on porridge.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 22/03/2015 21:58

Why do they need to eat before seven?

flanjabelle · 22/03/2015 21:58

I think you need to stop pushing your own bizarre attitudes to food onto your children. it is not gluttonous to eat a decent breakfast. there have been many studies that show children do better at school when they eat a proper breakfast.

It is much better for you to eat a big breakfast, decent lunch and smaller dinner. Then you are fueling your body for the times you are most active.

Chippednailvarnish · 22/03/2015 21:58

Eggs smell revolting; I can 'taste' them in the back of my throat for a while after I've had them even after thorough teeth brushing

But no one is asking you to eat the eggs...

Viviennemary · 22/03/2015 21:58

You sound worryingly obsessed by food. Have you got eating issues. If you have try not to pass them on to your children.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 22/03/2015 22:00

No ones asking you to eat the egg

It all seems to come back to you and what you think. Why don't you do some research into childrens diets and go from there. Kids diets shouldn't be the same as an adults - they are still growing!

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 22/03/2015 22:00

there would be a riot in my house if I only offered fruit and yogurt for breakfast!!

mine have weetabix with milk and a glass of apple juice. then if still hungry fruit/yogurt or crumpet.

LadyGregory · 22/03/2015 22:00

Deeply unreasonable. Cereal isn't some kind of breakfast sine qua non, and isnt inevitably sugary, anyway, and what is wrong with something hot first thing in the morning? Porridge? Eggs? Good muesli? Wholemeal toast and hummus?

ihatethecold · 22/03/2015 22:00

You actually sound quite mean op.

Sunshinesunflower · 22/03/2015 22:00

Worra I'm certainly not going to get them out of bed earlier just to eat more Confused

I know Chipped; I meant as a general rule - I don't really like the idea of anybody getting up and eating a large meal. As I said, i personally find it distasteful. I don't say this to the children but obviously nor do I encourage them to start the day eating a big hot meal.

At any rate I am by MN standards BU - off to bed soon - but needless to say there's no judgement of those who do eat different breakfasts; I just don't like the idea of encouraging my children to eat large amounts before it's even 7:30.
