To only let my children have fresh fruit/yoghurt for breakfast?

Sunshinesunflower · 22/03/2015 21:47

They have plenty of healthy food during the day but I don't really want them thinking the day has to start with them shoving lots of hot food or sugary cereals down themselves.

There is plenty of fruit for variety and just a small amount of plain yoghurt.

Aibu? I have always disliked the concept of breakfast so fruit seems a reasonable compromise.

cereal doesn't have to be sugary

flora717 · 22/03/2015 21:49

Yes. Massively restricting the options for breakfast EVERY day is unreasonable.

flanjabelle · 22/03/2015 21:50

Kids need a good breakfast to fuel them for the day. imo a small amount of yoghurt and some fruit is not enough. Whether you dislike the concept of breakfast Hmm or not, your children need it!

JuliaDream · 22/03/2015 21:50

It's not very filling is it?

What's wrong with a slice of toast ?

cestlavielife · 22/03/2015 21:50

They need carb's in the morning
Make them porridge

ilikebaking · 22/03/2015 21:50

Yes.
I eat a hot meal at breakfast everyday. I usually have a small portion of leftover dinner, curry, roast, fajitas, bolognaise, stir fry etc.
I don't enforce this on my kids.
They eat what they want at breakfast.
If you don't like a big meal in the morning, don't eat one. Some people love to breakfast like a king.

JeanSeberg · 22/03/2015 21:51

How old?

WorraLiberty · 22/03/2015 21:51

Why do they 'shove' lots of anything down themselves?

Surely they just eat in a civil manner? If not, you might want to work on that.

There are plenty of other healthy alternatives to fruit if they don't fancy it.

EquinoxEclipse · 22/03/2015 21:51

Is hot food unhealthy then? Confused

Fevertree · 22/03/2015 21:51

Yes YABU! Why have you 'always ddisliked the concept of breakfast'? And why should that mean your dc's can't have a filling breakfast?

FarFromAnyRoad · 22/03/2015 21:51

I'd have thought that low on carbs for a young person. Fruit doesn't fill you up and actually isn't all that particularly marvellous for you - high sugar contents and all that. Yoghurt? Full of bloody sugar and essentially just a small cup of milk with 3 bits of fruit in. I think YABU.

Boofy27 · 22/03/2015 21:51

Well it's not right up there with making them join ISIS but it's not perfect.

Pagwatch · 22/03/2015 21:51

It's not a great start to the day.
Some protein, some slow release carb, is a good idea.

You dislike the concept of breakfast? [boggles]

Sunshinesunflower · 22/03/2015 21:52

Why isn't fruit and yoghurt enough? I can't understand this. They aren't over or underweight and have plenty of heathly food throughout the day. Increasing the amount at breakfast time would be more food than they needed which obviously isn't good for them!

OP posts:
whattodoowiththeleftoverturkey · 22/03/2015 21:52

Yes. What don't you like about the concept of breakfast?

I feel far more energised if I have some protein for breakfast. Not everyone's body runs the same way as yours.

There are many alternatives to sugary cereals or hot food.

TendonQueen · 22/03/2015 21:52

Disliking the concept of breakfast is not great for kids. How about porridge just made with porridge oats and milk and add fruit to that? That'd be healthy. Don't see the problem with breakfast being hot? Porridge only takes 5 mins in our house.

EquinoxEclipse · 22/03/2015 21:53

You're weird.

FarFromAnyRoad · 22/03/2015 21:53

And as for 'disliked the concept of breakfast' - that's got to take the prize for Poncey Pish of the Day. Disliked the concept ffs - it's a meal. When you're hungry. Not a bloody hypothetical theory wrapped up in a great big fluffy old concept.
Pish.

Chippednailvarnish · 22/03/2015 21:53

I have always disliked the concept of breakfast

Do you have an eating disorder?

Mintyy · 22/03/2015 21:53

Hmm Hmm

WorraLiberty · 22/03/2015 21:54

Well it's not right up there with making them join ISIS but it's not perfect

Grin Grin I properly laughed out loud at that!

tak1ngchances · 22/03/2015 21:54

Eggs are the perfect start to the day and will keep your kids fuller for longer.

CliveCussler · 22/03/2015 21:54

Its not that fruit and yoghurt isn't enough. It's that its too limiting. It's like saying you can only have cheese salad for tea. They should have more variety.

What would they like to eat for breakfast?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 22/03/2015 21:54

Fruit and yoghurt isnt enough because it isnt a balanced meal. It is what a dieting woman would eat.

Kids need fats, they need protein, they need carbs. A bowl of porridge, plus fruit, plus a slice of toast (with peanut butter) is my 3yos usual breakfast and she is slender. Then need fuel. Breakfast should really be the biggest meal of the day imo.

Sunshinesunflower · 22/03/2015 21:54

Sorry, lots of posts while I was typing.

I'm not sure why I don't like the concept of breakfast but the idea of eating as soon as you get up has always struck me as faintly gluttonous which is obviously what I meant by 'shoving food' - in that it is rushed, rather than enjoyed which I feel food should be.

I don't mind at the weekend when they have been up an hour or so but I hate the idea of getting up and eating almost straightaway.
