To think carrot is the only vegetable that can segue between the sweet and savoury world.

Yesterday I tried a slice of this new fangled chocolate beetroot cake. It was like gnawing on a piece of the Berlin Wall. And there was a distinct taste of..............beetroot.

Why do people insist that beetroot cake works? The only way I can see it working is as a blunt implement with which to knock out an assailant.

I've heard rumours of courgette cake too and I have to say, I'm sceptical.

ALl of you skeptics obviously have not tried my carrot cake, my choco-beetroot cake OR my courgette-lemon cake, all absolutely delicious. I wish I could invite you all for a cuppa and a piece of each. Totally skeptic about avocado, though. I don't think it cooks well, it goes bitter, brown and peahhh..

FiveLittlePeas · 19/03/2015 15:40

my kids love apple& courgette muffins. I love mixing veg with cake, and experimenting, and it is generally a good mix. I make a chocolate and quinoa cake that is great and very "paleo" (I think, though I don't really care).

mumhum · 19/03/2015 16:31

Chocolate and beetroot ice cream, lovely smooth and velvety - yummy!

miniavenger · 19/03/2015 16:35

Sweet potato, parsnip and celeriac all taste really sweet to me. Had the first two in cake- yum! Intrigued to try celeriac.

Carrot cake is the most awesome though.

Igneococcus · 19/03/2015 16:35

My sweet potato and orange cupcakes always disappear very quickly when I make them for school or work cake sales.

EmGee · 19/03/2015 16:51

Just made the most yummy carrot cake (from the red Ella's Kitchen cookbook). From the yellow one, I have made chocolate and beetroot brownies which were also really yummy.

OnlyLovers · 19/03/2015 17:18

I've made chocolate beetroot cake and there was not a hint of beetroot. Nigel Slater recipe.

Carrot cake is the bee's knees too as far as I'm concerned.

Grantaire · 19/03/2015 17:23

Beetroot? Onions? Potatoes? Courfuckinggettes? In CAKE?

Perverts.

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 19/03/2015 17:39

I made beetroot brownies once. Whole family, including me, took one bite each and then the whole batch went in the bin. It was awful, and I love beetroot!

Veg do not belong in cake.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/03/2015 17:59

I've made three different beetroot chocolate cakes and they've all been grim, you could definitely taste the beetroot in all of them.

courgette choc cake has to be tasted before you diss it. my kids didn't realise till i told them - after several cakes. the lemon and courgette cake on the other hand looked like something the dog had sicked up.

fabuleux · 19/03/2015 19:36

I've made a bbc good food parsnip and maple cake, for DPs birthday cake and got him to try and guess what was in it, he couldn't tell and it was lovely!

Courgette cake/loaf is divine, although the only one I've made was supposed to be savoury and served with cream cheese spread on - delicious. Might make one at the weekend actually.....

LakeFlyPie · 19/03/2015 20:42

Courgette cake in summer and carrot cake when courgettes aren't in season are my 2 most popular bakes (no choc, lots of spice and raisins for sweetness)

Would like to try beetroot chocolate cake but can imagine a dodgy recipe / badly made one being unpleasant

lomega · 19/03/2015 21:59

We (dh and I) got served cake made with courgette the other day. I was Confused as it had a really odd texture. I ate a mouthful to be polite to our host but it wasn't nice.

Seems to be another wanky/hipster fad to make cakes with vegetables now! My colleague was discussing beetroot cake in the office and asking if anyone would eat it if she bought some in, we all kind of went 'not......really......'

BiscuitMillionaire · 19/03/2015 22:34

What about beans? An American friend on a gluten free diet made an amazingly good chocolate cake from black beans, no flour. Wish I had the receipe. It didn't taste beany at all.

FairyPenguin · 19/03/2015 22:40

I make chocolate beetroot brownies and they are really tasty, extremely moist. The kids love them too (and they watch me grate loads of beetroot into the mixture!).

I took some into work once, most people were sceptical but once someone tried one and said how good it was, they all went really quickly, and I've had requests to make more.

Courgette chocolate cake - made it once, it was ok, nothing to write home about, but inoffensive.

FarFromAnyRoad · 19/03/2015 22:46

Pumpkin Pie is the absolute best thing ever - I make it in a biscuity base and it's rich and creamy and lovely. I make it with butternut squash too divine. SIL makes a good courgette cake. No idea why - it just tastes like cake!

ConferencePear · 19/03/2015 22:49

Parsnip and caraway seed cake is worth a try. I love it.

MoJangled · 19/03/2015 22:49

I made a chocolate beetroot cake once. God what a faff. Purple fingers, took twice as long, hardly got rid of any of DFIL's beetroot. Never again.

Made the chocolate bean cake recently too. Meh - most of it went in the bin. Really wish that one had worked!

But I made a blinder of a vegan chocolate mousse by whizzing up avocado, banana and melted dark chocolate with a squeeze of lime. Awesome and no-one guessed. Grin

mardyelsie · 19/03/2015 22:59

I make an awesome chocolate aubergine cake.

ouryve · 19/03/2015 23:27

Chocolate beetroot cake is lovely, and not usually like eating breezeblock.

Also fond, obviously, of carrot cake, as well as cake with courgette or butternut squash in.

yumyumpoppycat · 20/03/2015 01:07

I made a beetroot chocolate cake once, it tasted great but was beyond crumbly made a total mess.

Breadandwine · 20/03/2015 01:20

I've made chocolate and beetroot cake, yeast-risen bread and here is a Creole choc and beetroot soda bread.

All are gorgeous! Smile

SmillasSenseOfSnow · 20/03/2015 03:42

I love courgette. Especially with tagliatelle and creme fraiche and lots of garlic and bacon and lemon juice and parmesan. I honestly don't know why I'd ever be tempted to waste one in a cake.

I don't think this thread is for me. Confused

On another note, my DP bought a slice of cheesecake from the supermarket yesterday and it genuinely tasted like camembert. I don't think it was supposed to. And it wasn't a good thing.

Confused

I'm a fan of Wagamama's chocolate cake with wasabi in, and the weird cheesecake they do, can't remember what was in that. Maybe the wasabi counts though?
