To think carrot is the only vegetable that can segue between the sweet and savoury world.

Yesterday I tried a slice of this new fangled chocolate beetroot cake. It was like gnawing on a piece of the Berlin Wall. And there was a distinct taste of..............beetroot.

Why do people insist that beetroot cake works? The only way I can see it working is as a blunt implement with which to knock out an assailant.

I've heard rumours of courgette cake too and I have to say, I'm sceptical.

Black bean brownies taste fine, but the texture is a bit off, a little too claggy.
Tomato soup cake tastes quite nice, but is best made with hm soup.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 20/03/2015 06:27

I don't like parsnips but this cake was very very good.

Flipchart · 20/03/2015 07:19

I had butter squash Muffins from a cafe in Edinburgh last year. They were nice, if a bit too sweet.

Re Butterban chocolate cake, there are loads of receipes on google. Think I might give it a go this weekend.

Flipchart · 20/03/2015 07:44

I meant Butternut Squash cupcakes!

mildlyacquiescent · 20/03/2015 07:48

This thread makes me feel strangely queasy.

I hate carrot cake too, though! And rhubarb in puddings. Who dreams up these things?

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 20/03/2015 07:49

Still not convinced. I had choc and beet root cake at bristol zoo on Saturday. It was horrible and I like very root.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 20/03/2015 07:49

Beetroot silly spell check

Hazchem · 20/03/2015 10:27

My mum made bloody mary jellies once. Awful awful things. such a waste of booze. And she made them in muffin sized things not little shots so you had sort of chew through them so gross. Her Gin and Tonic Jellies on the other hand are marvelous.

dollybird · 20/03/2015 10:31

I've made lemon courgette cake lots of times and it's delicious!

keepitsimple0 · 20/03/2015 10:43

if you don't like pumpkin pie, I don't like YOU. Grin

It's a pretty narrow view of food. Other cuisines blur the line between sweet and savory. Lots of veggies work in sweets and lots of fruit work in savory foods.

be wild. Throw some raisins in your salad.

squoosh · 20/03/2015 10:45

Pumpkin pie is absolutely rank. I've tried it twice, it was rank both times.

Lots of veggies work in sweets and lots of fruit work in savory foods.

As I said originally my issue is with vegetables in sweet food not fruit in savoury food.

It's been made wrong then; pumpkin pie is divine, food of the gods.

ArcheryAnnie · 20/03/2015 10:54

A properly made parsnip cake beats carrot cake hands down.

(Parsnip isn't juicy though, so when you are making it you have to account for the liquid in the mix slightly differently.)

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 20/03/2015 11:11

Fruit in savoury food? No.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 20/03/2015 11:11

Except pineapple on pizza.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/03/2015 11:22

Fruit in savoury meals generally doesn't work IMO, with a few exceptions.

Duck with orange - no.

Duck with cherry - no.

Gammon with pineapple - no.

Apricots with lamb - no.

Pineapple on pizza - massive no.

Pork with apple sauce - no
Sultanas in curry - no.
Turkey and cranberry - yes
Brie and cranberry - yes
Apple in coleslaw - yes

I wouldn't say I had a narrow view of food generally, but fruit and savoury, particularly meat meals, is not a taste combination I like.

squoosh · 20/03/2015 11:26

Duck with orange - Hell Yeah!.
Duck with cherry - and again, hell yeah! (duck with rhubarb is great too)
Gammon with pineapple - okay
Apricots with lamb - Yes.
Pineapple on pizza - only behind closed doors where people won't judge.
Pork with apple sauce - OF COURSE
Sultanas in curry - BIG FAT NO

Turkey and cranberry - yes
Brie and cranberry - yes
Apple in coleslaw - yes

Pumpkin pie is delicious, one of my favourite things about Autumn! I made croissants with a pumpkin puree filling as well, SOOO good. Butternut squash and sweet potatoes also work. Sweet potato brownies are incredible.

TheKitchenWitch · 20/03/2015 12:12

Courgette strudel (common east European dessert) is very, very nice.
Pumpkin pie and pumpkin cake are both lovely.
Beetroot chocolate cake is ok.
Butternut squash muffins with chocolate chips are the bollocks!
As is a well made carrot cake ie mine. Grin

But I think you're basically right, there aren't many that make the transition well.

NeedABumChange · 20/03/2015 12:20

Really depends how you are all putting beetroot into the cake. The only way I like is if the beetroot is roasted from raw for an hour and then puréed and added to cake mix. Raw or precooked beetroot grated in is bleurgh.

Also just thought of sweet potato biscuits. Made them last year and everyone at work gobbled them up and they are not scared of saying yuck. Also my dog loves them although he eats anything Grin

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 20/03/2015 12:28

I don't know, I think pumpkin pie is one of those things you need to grow up with to really appreciate it. I absolutely love it. The big debate in DH's family is whether you eat it with ice cream (DH), pouring cream (MIL and SIL) or maple syrup (FIL). Each will fight to the death defending their choice of pumpkin pie accompaniment. Tis a vair serious topic.

SmillasSenseOfSnow · 20/03/2015 12:57

Oh gosh, I love fruit in savoury food. Lemon/orange chicken or duck, apricot/prunes in stuffing, pineapple on pizza, figs/plums/prunes in some sort of alcoholic liqueur and wrapped in bacon, orange/pineapple/cranberry/other in cheese, there must be loads more that I'm forgetting. Mmmm.

itsonlysubterfuge · 20/03/2015 13:07

Carrot cake is wonderous. Pumpkin pie is wonderful, and so is pumpkin cake. You can make sugar from beets, but have never tried beetroot cake. Avocado makes a wonderful chocolate avocado custard like dessert.

An avocado is technically a fruit, but is also a vegetable. There is nothing that is botanically speaking a vegetable. Vegetables are different types of fruits, roots, leaves, etc. that we normally use in savoury dishes.

ClareBaldingsHair · 20/03/2015 13:23

How do you pronounce segue?
