Popular but tacky

Sorry, not really an AIBU and inspired by the Pandora thread so breaking a few MN 'rules'. I found it really interesting to see what people view as tacky. Agreed with some and was surprised by others.

My personal pet hates are those baby on board signs in the back window of many cars (wouldn't mention it in real life as one of my best friends has one), rings that say things like 'Mum' on them and streaky blonde highlights in dark hair.

Completely appreciate that we all have and are entitled to different tastes. Just fascinated by the strong but opposing responses that an innocuous item can cause. The things I've just listed are viewed as useful/beautiful by many other people.

Oh a coachbuilt pram no one uses them these days only weirdo's obsessed with being vintage and different Grin also i think the words vintage and shabby chic are tacky

Penquin · 19/03/2015 20:03

I feel really tolerant reading this thread Grin

Can't really find the energy to get annoyed about this stuff, quite glad too as it must be annoying to be annoyed about these pretty popular choices.

Penquin · 19/03/2015 20:04

You're all a big bunch of Mrs Mangels Grin

Awks · 19/03/2015 20:11

am lol'ing at Converse on the over 30's. And no, haven't rtft either.

Awks · 19/03/2015 20:12

I only have one.

More rings than you have fingers. Urgh.

TwigletFiend · 19/03/2015 20:20

Use of the pet name 'bae' for everyone and everything.

I can feel my forehead vein throbbing with rage just thinking about it.

Pippin8 · 19/03/2015 20:21

The big fru fru party dresses for little girls. Especially taffeta or velvet with a big bow at the back. And the horrible plastic looking shoes that go with them.

Babies headbands for sure, especially if the baby is bald.

Off white clothing that's clearly been washed wrong.

runningforfreedom · 19/03/2015 20:44

Baby on board signs.... eughhh
I think the worst comment i've ever seen on Facebook was a woman who actually thought people would slow down because she has a baby on board sign in her car... "I mean they were getting so close to me, even with a baby on board sign!" Does she think people who tail gate care?
Hyphenated names
Fake designer clothing
Stupid Facebook posts saying things like "my name means..." "I am this Disney princess"
Children dressed in too many brand names
... oh so many things

myusernameisusername · 19/03/2015 20:50

i Grin at Bae it's the Dutch word for poop turns to DH... i love you Poop Grin Grin Grin Grin

Clueing4looks · 19/03/2015 21:17

The pet name 'moo' for a child.

Three seperate peoples FB status updates today:

"Ah, my moo is poorly"
"Can't wait to pick up my moo from play school"
"My ickle moo is being soooo naughty today"

Waiting for the day when someone actually names their child 'Moo'. It's bound to happen.

CalleighDoodle · 19/03/2015 21:19

Ive almost managed to convince my retired dad that people who hang twee hearts in their windows are part of some cult :D

lomega · 19/03/2015 21:25

I feel snobby but here goes;

Blonde hair with dark roots showing.
Anything covered in diamontes/'bling', be it jewellery, homeware, clothes etc.
Like a pp mentioned, those signs saying 'Home' 'Bath' 'Love' etc. There was a really funny thread a while back where someone had suggested putting words like 'Piss' in the toilet and 'Shag' above their bed Grin
Thick gold jewellery, like large gold chains or those giant MUM rings.
Wearing jogging bottoms/tracksuits in public when you're not jogging/exercising.
Wearing pyjamas/slippers in public generally.
Most of the shite in my local TK Maxx.

grannytomine · 19/03/2015 21:28

My husband wouldn't have the baby on board signs, he reckoned they were targets for psychopaths.

Provencalroseparadox · 19/03/2015 21:30

I know a photographer and to me his shoots are everything I associate with tat:

  • cake smash photoshoots
  • princess photoshoots
  • superhero photoshoots
  • baby in flowerpot photoshoots
  • fairy photoshoots
  • children in a lavender field photoshoots

But I have many many tacky traits according to this thread:

  • Converse
  • Uggs
  • Cath Kidston
  • Anoraks
  • Not wearing make-up
  • Drinking wine every night
  • Boden
  • Waitrose
  • Big earrings
  • Word art around the housre

Incidentally I work with a load of hipster boys who wear buns on their heads, have big beards, and wear flip flops with skinny jeans. They all think they are individual but are just as much of a tribe as the rest of us.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 19/03/2015 21:34

I have highlights and a mum ring.

I think starting the gazillionth thread about things you think are in bad taste is unoriginal, desperate and tacky.

iwanttogotothechaletschool · 19/03/2015 21:37

Vinyl wall stickers, the ones that are trite sayings or entire damn poems.
White or cream prams (apologies to anyone with one!)
Use of the word 'hubby'

Debinaround · 19/03/2015 21:37

Ah man I wear converse high tops and they are leopard print and I'm 35!!!!!

My son also had a Newcastle United football strip at 3 months old. It was a presant thoughBlush

Don't think I belong on mumsnet, going to try netmums insteadWink

lomega · 19/03/2015 21:41

I think this thread is meant to be lighthearted, or I've taken it in the wrong way. I don't have the actual energy to get churned up about people having the word 'Bath' in their loos. :)

One more to add - adults who like Disney that little bit too much. Don't get me wrong - I will happily sit and watch Disney films with my DS, am happy for him to wear clothes with the characters on, and will sing 'the bear necessities' with him...but I have friends who actually sing along to the songs on their ipods in the car, wear oversized character shirts, and adorn their facebook walls with all things Disney-related. I just find it a bit odd! Each to their own but one pal came to an xmas party last year wearing full Minnie Mouse merchandise, including a red polka dotted headband. She's 30. Her daughter (9) looked embarrassed and was not wearing anything remotely Disney, just plain jeans/jumper.

OurGlass · 19/03/2015 21:45

Short wedding dresses - so so so ugly.

CalleighDoodle · 19/03/2015 21:49

Wine every night is not tacky, it is a drink problem Hmm

GladysTheGolem · 19/03/2015 21:52

Tasimo/nespresso/coffe capsule machines. Just make a fucking coffee you lazy oaf (dh really wants one, my foof is down).
Can see them being a great idea in a small office however!

pinningwobble · 19/03/2015 21:53

I intend to wear converse and disney related things until I am a very old woman.

elQuintoConyo · 19/03/2015 22:08

Why's your foof down, Gladys?

Great name, btw.

Popular but tacky... em... Blutac?

ILovePud · 19/03/2015 22:11

The80sweregreat · 19/03/2015 22:14
