Popular but tacky

Sorry, not really an AIBU and inspired by the Pandora thread so breaking a few MN 'rules'. I found it really interesting to see what people view as tacky. Agreed with some and was surprised by others.

My personal pet hates are those baby on board signs in the back window of many cars (wouldn't mention it in real life as one of my best friends has one), rings that say things like 'Mum' on them and streaky blonde highlights in dark hair.

Completely appreciate that we all have and are entitled to different tastes. Just fascinated by the strong but opposing responses that an innocuous item can cause. The things I've just listed are viewed as useful/beautiful by many other people.

'Powered by Bitchdust' signs on cars.

Shudder.

People who refer to others constantly as 'babe' or 'hun' or 'wifey' - bonus tacky points for being over 25.

Men who post pictures and memes on Facebook such as one I saw yesterday "How a real man tells his woman he loves her" with a picture of a bloke's hand squeezing a woman's bikini clad arse.

One more...

Friendship/relationship quote posts again on FB (seems to be a thing for my parents generation - Winnie the Pooh seems to feature often for some reason).

Ahh that felt good!

Lucyccfc · 19/03/2015 17:19

Tacky for me is:

Too much bling
Anything animal print
Onesies (esp animal print)
Anyone who dresses like Kat Moon or Bianca from Eastenders - big earrings, boobs hanging out etc
Fake Uggs
Fake nails
Orange tans and big black eyebrows
Pandora - bloody expensive, but looks really cheap
Tattoo's of your child's name on your neck, wrist or ankle (if you have problems remembering it, maybe you shouldn't be a parent)

I'll pull my judgy pants up and see if I can think of any more.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 19/03/2015 17:22

Rings on toes. They always look weird
Nail art
Bodycon dresses
Princess dresses for small children
High heels for small children particularly the type sold to go with princess dresses
Elton John
Kim & Kanye
Shorts that show off your lower butt cheeks
Tattoos, particularly the arm sleeve kind.

FuckItBucket · 19/03/2015 17:25

Why is 25 the cut off for things?

Do people change the minute they wake up on their 25th?!

myusernameisusername · 19/03/2015 17:26

One i have remembered that made me see red for days was a picture on a Facebook group of a 9yr old girl wearing a faux fur coat and black wedge high heels with massive hoops in her ears Angry some of the comments " such a beautiful girl and dressed just how a girl should be" " nice to see you dress your Daughter right .... mine never leaves the house without her handbag followed by the hashtag #raisedrightShock i wanted to comment but had the urge to throw my phone across the room before i could Grin

myusernameisusername · 19/03/2015 17:28

ferretyfeet · 19/03/2015 17:29

I can't stand those silly ribbons that people put round their hairless babies heads, sorry

xiaozhu · 19/03/2015 17:31

Anything from Jack Wills, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hunters, Kath Kidston
Louis Vuitton luggage
Colour-coordinated baby clothes (boys in blue, girls pink etc.)
Unnecessary 4x4s (i.e. not belonging to a farmer)
Black leggings worn under tunic-type tops
V neck T shirts on a man with muscles. Ick
Most chain restaurants (I am a food snob)

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 19/03/2015 17:38

It's a pram like this Grin

Popular but tacky
Happy36 · 19/03/2015 17:40

myusernameisusername

Big awful prams are prams that are massive and need their own parking space but are usually found blocking access to several tables in a restaurant.

Agree with xiaozhu especially re: Cath Kidston. Can´t stand it.

Love this thread.

blankgaze · 19/03/2015 17:41

Top-knot buns

QueQuesto · 19/03/2015 17:48

Those photo shoots where people give their baby a cake to smash up and smear everywhere. It's not cute, it's a waste of good cake and your child will cringe when you bring the photos out in the future.

I'm guilty of wearing converses and being over 30, over 40 and even over 50. I believe I am completely entitled to comfortable footwear. Feck off all the ageist fashion police.

m0therofdragons · 19/03/2015 18:30

Princess dresses for small children probably are tacky but most dc things are. I saw a dad buying his 3yo a hand bag in harrods for more than £1000, my instant thought was that at 3 she would probably prefer a sparkly one from Primark. Besides, I have 2 3yo dds and they are far too feisty for me to take away their princess dresses!

Openup41 · 19/03/2015 18:44

I have quite a few;

Tracksuits - at a push they should only be worn as lounge wear or when going to the gym
Tattoos of any kind
Block coloured bright hair
Head bands on babies with no hair
Fake uggs
Onesies
Clothes with brand name clearly displayed
4 by 4's when the owner does not live in the sticks but a narrow road
Drivers who play loud music
Pimped up cars
Cheap stilettos
Over short dresses
People who only watch soaps or reality tv
People who discuss celebrities as though they personally know them
Shops - Iceland/Asda - absolutely awful, cheap food
Garden gnomes, horse heads, lions heads

MozzchopsThirty · 19/03/2015 18:49

Oh god yes to those awful doughnut buns stuck on people's heads

My mum wears converse and she's nearly 70 Grin

TrulyTurtles · 19/03/2015 19:02

I wear converse and I'm eleventy five.Grin
Someone walks past me every morning, big modern pram, but to make it completely pavement blocking there is a basket on the side, so one and a half times wider than normal.
Crop or short tops with leggings. (Looking at you dd)

Ohbollocksandballs · 19/03/2015 19:12

How does one wash a glitter glass?

Giant prams
'Blinged' anything
Bad extensions
Gym wear that you know the only time it will see a bead of sweat is when the wearer is running from the police
Sunglasses indoors
Shiny faces
Bright pink lipstick
Headbands on anyone esp adults.

emmelinelucas · 19/03/2015 19:30

Ellie-Mai
Evie-Mae
Milli-Mae
Lillee-Mae
Tillie-Mai etc, etc

You get the picture.

WhyNotSmile · 19/03/2015 19:31

Agree with so many of these (especially the obviously branded clothes... ick!). A pet peeve is personalised number plates, though (don't tell my in-laws; they all have them). Particularly if they're trying to spell out "Mum" or something.

Adizzylass2014 · 19/03/2015 19:33

Yes awful hyphenated names!
