to ask how much you are spending on your foreign summer family holiday this year?

I've spent today getting quotes for my family of 5 to spend two weeks in Spain/Italy/Greece/Turkey. I'm astounded by how much it costs to spend a fortnight away. Mark Warner quoted me over £10k for s fortnight in their cheapest resort!!!

So where are you going and how much are you paying for flights plus accommodation?

3500 all inclusive. Algarve

sansou · 18/03/2015 14:30

Family of 4 - 2 adults & 2 dc. Another one here who deliberately tries to take their main holiday at May/Oct half terms as opposed to August.

I aim to get short haul European flights for £150 pp so £600. Southern Europe is usually hot - we've been to Sardinia twice (end of May/beg of June) and Sicily (end of Oct) in the last few years.

Car hire for the week is usually £150.
Accommodation, I budget up to £1.5K - this can get us very plush S/C prime beachside villa with heated pool or a decent 4* hotel HB (2 bedrooms! Sharing with the kids is no holiday imho!).

I've always managed to come within budget of £1.5K - £2K for 1 wk short haul. It is easy to do it for less since I choose to splurge on luxury s/c accommodation (because I can due to avoiding the August premium) - there are huge swathes of rentals cheaper around. I like doing my holiday research though.

BingBong36 · 18/03/2015 14:30

That's for 2 adults and 2 children

KitZacJak · 18/03/2015 14:43

This year will cost for 2 adults and 2 children:

Eurotunnel & insurance - approx £270

2 nights stop over in cheap hotels - £100

Pitch on 5 Star campsite with waterpark for 12 nights in August - £650 (a lot I think to pitch our own tent!!)

We normally spend just under £2K including everything (the above, plus tolls, petrol, meals out, activities and eating in at the tent.)

We don't go away in the summer holiday either although am looking at a mid week break in Berlin at the moment as I was brought up there and want to show it to my children. If I book now I will be able to get flights and three nights in a hotel for about £350. Holidays taken at Easter or half terms here as well sometimes in term time too

Nicknacky · 18/03/2015 15:18

We are going away over the new year to the Carribean for a week, then a disney cruise. Two adults and two kids, costing 14.5k but will be a couple more thousand for trips, drinks etc.

Probably about 9% of our income?

mrssnodge · 18/03/2015 15:31

nice cheapy for us - 1 week, mid June all inc- Majorca- 1050 me & Dp only - no dc as all grown up!

Stinkersmum · 18/03/2015 15:32

Just me & DH (and 12+2 bump) off to New York & Florida. Away for a fortnight in total. Costing about 3k plus spends. We've saved 5k for spends. So total about 7% of our income.

Jellyrollquiltmom · 18/03/2015 15:44

Organising our holidays keeps me busy from Decenber to April! I want to find out all the possibilities and costs before I decide and absolutely refuse to use a Travel Agency. Owners Direct is my first choice for self catering and last year we found a lovely flat in Salento (the Italian Caribbean) for £80 a day, six beds. That was with Coste del Sud website, no complaints. Sort out cheap flights while you still can and I think you can budget at about £1800 for a fortnight plus your food. i'm happier with self catering than cheap all-in hotels (swimming-pool aerobics, anyone?).

Rushyswife · 18/03/2015 15:54

We are spending about £500 plus spending money for a week in Portugal in May. BA flights booked with points. Staying with family

Centre Parcs £675 in July for a long weekend plus spending and petrol.

£6000 for 2 weeks Mark Warner Rhodes for the 4 of us in September, expensive but we have 2 pre schoolers and are making the most of term time hols!

I also took the children for a week in lanzarote in Jan was about £600 all in as again I used air miles for BA flights

Crabstick · 18/03/2015 16:02

Around £1000 for a two week holiday to Ireland, that's includes ferry and farm house hire.

Then camping for a week in Norfolk end August for £128. Bargain.

2 adults 2 children.

codandchipstwice · 18/03/2015 16:09

3 weeks in France for £1k for me, DH and 3dcs. Week in N France sharing gite with friends, week in caravan in Provence and week in family house in S Central France. Travel (inc auto train and 2 hotel rooms in Paris as cheaper than decent room did 5) about another £650 all in.

Cheaper than 3 weeks in UK we've found

codandchipstwice · 18/03/2015 16:14

about 2% of our income but we are paying off big debts and debt repayment and childcare is about 25% of our income so it's still a big spend for us

Buxtonstill · 18/03/2015 16:55

£10k for two adults for 5 weeks in Mauritius, flying first class, staying in a beachside villa.

hmc · 18/03/2015 16:57

An unseemly amount for three weeks in Western Australia (via Singapore)

But you only live once

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 18/03/2015 17:00

We live in the US and so far we've spent $3000 on flights home (2 adults, 1 toddler and a baby). Two weeks in the UK, inc car hire, Peppa Pig World, visiting various friends and so on - I reckon we'll be somewhere around the £4000 mark. Oh yeah, and we've a wedding to go to whilst we're back so there'll be the gift, outfits, drinks etc for that. Can't wait!

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 18/03/2015 17:04

Buxton - that sounds like a good deal! I used to work for an airline and first is not cheap, so I think you've done well there!

SoonToBeMrsB · 18/03/2015 17:06

DP and I are doing 10 nights AI in Turkey with Thomson this September, £2200 all in. Next year we're doing 10 nights in NYC (getting married while we're over there, hence the long stay) and it's looking to be about £2000pp for flights and the hotel we've set our hearts on.

hillbilly · 18/03/2015 17:11

3 weeks camping in France - probably 2.5k including spending money.

ilovechristmas1 · 18/03/2015 17:13
