To think that the society we live in is no less misogynist than it ever was?

I have had the misfortune to come across several accounts on Twitter whose only purpose seems to be to belittle women, say that women are all 'hoes' all deserve to be cheated on and disliked and used for sex. These accounts have in some cases, hundreds of thousands of followers.

Where do these views come from? It just makes me very sad as I have 3 dds. I hear an increasing number of much younger men expressing these kinds of views. It's a general problem I think. And I fear for what the future holds for my dds in relationships ð???

What can we do about this? Do parents not feel a responsibility to instil in their sons or indeed in their children generally that this sort of thing is not ok. In the same way that racism is not ok...

Totally agree. It makes me despair so much.

lottieandmias · 11/03/2015 11:59

I think it's very sad. But there doesn't seem much that we can do about it :(

OP posts:
Quiero · 11/03/2015 12:03

Our media perpetuates it and encourages mysoginy. It's ridiculous.

This was in the Sun today Sad

Pootles2010 · 11/03/2015 12:05

Its still there but nowhere near what it was! We have the vote, control over our lives, our money, our property. Wasn't that long ago you had to give up work when you married in many workplaces!

Not saying we're there yet, not by a long shot, but its so much better than it was.

chiliplant · 11/03/2015 12:11

I know what u mean. I live in gold cup town and every night club/ pub ships in strippers for the occasion. Not t mention the amount of illegal sex trade.
Last year trafficked women were brought on especially for race week. I absolutely hate this week!!

lottieandmias · 11/03/2015 12:29

I agree Quiero. The DM is equally awful. So many people read it too :(

StellaAlpina · 11/03/2015 12:38

I think it is worse in some ways and better in others.
In day to day life I think it is better than say 20 years ago e.g. at work, in pubs, in the street.
Unfortunately the misogynists seemed to have migrated to the internet instead.
It's fine for me because I see it as I don't for e.g. read tabloids etc. BUT I think it must be much harder for teenagers growing up with social media, easily accessible internet etc.
For most of when I was in secondary school we had one desktop computer in the sitting room which was on dial-up thus the internet was usually only allowed for homework. I only got a laptop of my own for university and a smart phone in my 20s.

Griphook · 11/03/2015 12:45

In some ways I think things has more on in regards to work and maternity rights.... But women are now seen as sexual objects, a sort it plaything witha consist startled look on their face.
All types of media encourage this and informed this

Griphook · 11/03/2015 12:46

ChickenMe · 11/03/2015 12:52

I agree with Stella. I feel confident that I will be treated fairly in the workplace (and I work in a male-dominated job) for instance but I despair over pop culture. It's like OH will listen to some inappropriate rap music in his car but I won't have that or any explicit videos on in the house when I am there. It's sexist because there isn't a male equivalent of a "hoe"/bitch etc.
I was brought up to think I am equal to anyone and I find the way women are portrayed (and to be fair, portraying themselves) hurtful and offensive to me. I go on a lot about it. He doesn't really get it but I still go on. I've had the same conversations with his family but they are younger and see it as inevitable and don't fight it.

CunningCat · 11/03/2015 12:53

YANBU. Sadly, we live in a patriarchal society, until that changes we will always be disadvantagedSad

Gottagetmoving · 11/03/2015 12:54

Its not just men, young women seem to go along with it. It's like they are undoing everything that has been achieved. My daughters friends on facebook have ridiculous profile pictures where they are pouting or posing in sexy poses, and most of their profiles are full of selfies with comments about how 'hot' they look from boys and girls. Its all talk about appearances.
I am not surprised they get treated like airheads when they act like airheads. Hopefully they will grow out of it?

Quiero · 11/03/2015 12:58

Yes it maybe isn't that the situation is worse it's more that it's more obvious due to social and other media platforms.

I said something really mildly feminist on Twitter, along the lines of the Tory Government's cuts being harder on women and the response I got was disgusting. I was basically told to get back in my box and shut up or I'd be sexually assaulted Angry

Some men really hate women. Thankfully I think most of these men are sat in a dark room with only their keyboard and mouse for friends. Most of the men I meet in real life have a strong respect for women and equality.

Quiero · 11/03/2015 12:59

Got they are taught that their appearance is their value and currency. The media again Angry Angry Angry

lottieandmias · 11/03/2015 13:00

I agree that women go along with it too. Absolutely. And that is part of the problem sadly.

LaurieFairyCake · 11/03/2015 13:00

I think the first line in a Germaine Greer book sums it up for me: "Women have no idea how much men hate them".

There is a very thin daytime veneer of civility occasionally breached - like the mumsnetter described yesterday a man swearing at her for not choosing to use a different petrol pump but night time is a different matter.

Apparently the fear of crime is much greater than actual crime and that young men are at much greater risk of crime - however, I think that's because women are much less likely to wander about after dark.

I never do anymore. I get in my car, I go somewhere - then I drive home.

lottieandmias · 11/03/2015 13:02

I know of a young woman who decided not to remove her body hair and she blogged about it. She received far more abuse about it from women than from men, sadly.

OP posts:
lottieandmias · 11/03/2015 13:04

I agree about the sexy poses. There are an increasing number of young women whose main profile picture is them standing in a bra. I think it's fine to want to look nice but some of these trends are very unhealthy.

OP posts:
specialsubject · 11/03/2015 13:07

the great thing about the internet is that you can spot these people as they tell you all about themselves. It is then easy to breed out these attitudes.

that said, the bloody silly anti-men comment I heard yesterday gave me the rage. Lot of that on here too.

DopeyDawg · 11/03/2015 13:09

Well, apparently the petition for Clarkson to be re-instated has now reached 300K.

Suspended because he 'threw a punch at a man'.

Of course, when he 'joked' about lorry drivers murdering prostitutes, that was okay, wasn't it?

Yes, the hating of women is still very deeply entrenched in our society.

Quiero · 11/03/2015 13:10

My autocorrect changes the spelling of misogyny to mysoginy - even autocorrect is fucking sexist Grin

Gottagetmoving · 11/03/2015 13:11

However far we may have come - I don't think men will ever treat women as fully equal as long as there are women who still insist on using their sexuality to get where they want - or what they want.
Not every woman wants to join in to gain real equality for all women when they can polish their egos through responses to how they look and how many men desire them.
We all buy stuff based on adverts using women as sex objects. Until women stop supporting all the media rubbish it will never change.
TBH - I don't think it ever will.

JohnCusacksWife · 11/03/2015 13:29

I think the first line in a Germaine Greer book sums it up for me: "Women have no idea how much men hate them".

I just don't buy that. And I think life must be pretty grim if you go trhough it believing that you're hated by 50% of the population.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 11/03/2015 13:53

I don't agree with GG that all men hate women, but I think there is a sizeable minority who really, really do.

richthegreatcornholio · 11/03/2015 15:14

Of course, when he 'joked' about lorry drivers murdering prostitutes, that was okay, wasn't it?

OK? It was fucking hilarious!
