To think that the society we live in is no less misogynist than it ever was?

I have had the misfortune to come across several accounts on Twitter whose only purpose seems to be to belittle women, say that women are all 'hoes' all deserve to be cheated on and disliked and used for sex. These accounts have in some cases, hundreds of thousands of followers.

Where do these views come from? It just makes me very sad as I have 3 dds. I hear an increasing number of much younger men expressing these kinds of views. It's a general problem I think. And I fear for what the future holds for my dds in relationships ð???

What can we do about this? Do parents not feel a responsibility to instil in their sons or indeed in their children generally that this sort of thing is not ok. In the same way that racism is not ok...

Sorry but you're taking me out of context. Pretty much as happened to bumbley.

I'm well aware of the examples you've provided but you were originally talking about the people running our society.

None (bar the last 2) of the examples you've given come from people that are running our society.

Ironically, for almost all of your examples, the people who are actually running society are putting new laws in place to actually improve the status quo.

ManOfSpiel · 12/03/2015 22:42

Acknowledging it would be a start...

Lol and on that bombshell I bid you good night.

It's patently obvious you've not digested anything I've posted so I'll say thanks and leave it at that Smile

I'd go so far as to say that the increase in misogyny is a way of punishing women for thier lack of deference to men

Suzannewithaplan · 12/03/2015 22:54

..an attempt to put us firmly back in our places

bumbleymummy · 12/03/2015 22:58

Oh, for the love of God and your own blood pressure, just don't engage with that Bumbley one. It's not worth it. In fact, it hurts just watching other people doing it on here!

lottie - YANBU.

The porn industry scares me, I have to say. I think it is responsible for a massive downward slide in the way women are perceived, and thus treated. Porn, in and of itself, I don't have a problem with. The porn industry that exists right now, I have a huge problem with. :(

pearpotter · 13/03/2015 05:57

I think it's just more out in the open now. My mum always warned me there were always some men who actually really hate and fear women. Porn has proliferated massively with the internet. Also I agree there are those who feel threatened by female emancipation or any kind of challenge to white middle class male domination of the world.

GallicGarlic · 13/03/2015 06:05

ManOfSpiel - when you come back ... "What would you have me do?"

Something I'd like all decent men to do: call out casual misogyny.

Don't stay quiet or chuckle meaninglessly when somebody tells a slut joke or a rape joke. Remark that it's offensive, or that rape isn't funny - because the 1 in 17 men who is a serial rapist thinks this kind of talk means it's normal to do rape. He might be in your group; you really can't know. So you can do your bit to reduce the chance of encouraging a rapist.

Call out men who make stupid objectifying remarks about women, whether the women are physically present or a media representation.

Let younger men know that the rape they see in everyday porn isn't actually good sex: they're growing up believing that sex hurts women.

It'll really help if decent men do this. The kind of man who abuses women will listen more to a male voice than a female one.
