to give access to unlimited fruit but virtually no sugar or juice

I give my DC access to virtually unlimted fruit but they rarely have sugar or proccesed foods and no sugary drinks. I find with fruit it is easy to self regulate and that's not something most people can do with processed foods. Had a sleepover and when I told the mum how much fruit her dd had eaten she looked horrified as if I had given her poison. When I know my dd had beans on toast (sugar) with orange juice and ice cream. I found this less than ideal but I said nothing.

Aibu or is she?

How much fruit did her DD have? Maybe she was more worried about her having a funny tummy than the sugar content.

My ds is only 19 months so no experience on sleepover thing but he eats huge amounts of fruit so yanbu

Yanbu, fruit has a lot of nutritional value in fibre, vitamins etc that other sugars don't so wouldn't restrict, would just make sure a variety was eaten, eg not just loads of oranges and ensure toothbrushing but otherwise fine IMO.

Ah yes on my sleepover we had a home made Shepard's pie with some steamed green veg and fruit for desert. Just water to drink usually, but I did give the girls some redbush tea as she has started liking it, although I think she just likes say tick tock lol

It depends - I have one child who will eat orange after orange until they give him diarrhoea and another child who will do similar with bananas with the opposite effect.

I agree that too much processed food isn't good, but moderation is important so your child learns how to control what they eat.

Dentist told me that since the five fruit and veg a day advice has come in, whilst the nations health may have improved the nations teeth especially children has gone downhill. My dd has thin enamel and dentist has advised only ine piece of fruit a day. The acid in some fruit is really bad for teeth as well as the sugar. And he particularly says to avoid dried fruit.

Mine have unlimited access to fruits and veg, mostly Dd will eat mostly apples and pears, sometimes plums. Lots of veg with meals. No fruit juice at all here, so milk or water to drink with occasional tea if she asks. It's done wonders for her skin and weight. We ate this way before moving to UK then got here 18 months ago and lived with my Mum who had lots of yummy processed foods for her, now Mum moved to her own place, we are back to normal. She gets more processed stuff at Mums once a week and we are OK with that.

If it was 12 pineapples, 6 oranges, 7 apples, 3 boxes of grapes and a few lemons I could understand her being horrified.

How much fruit? In any case it wouldn't bother me. I'm very laid back about things like that and would be very hard pushed to complain about food provided on a sleepover unless it consisted entirely of Harobos!

Perhaps the mum objected to the food miles and CO2 emissions this fruit fest created.

unlimited fruit is just as bad as sugary drinks and processed food. as pp has said the sugars in fruit do an enormous amount of harm to the enamel on kids teeth

perhaps she was less horrified about you giving it to her daughter and more about her daughter eating ot as perhaps she won't at home. my childminder writes dd's snacks etc in her book daily and I am always surprised by what she eats there as she refuses it at home

Unlimited vegetables but not unlimited fruit - too much sugar and fruit acid. Should have done carrot and cucumber sticks Grin

At this stage only the OP knows how much of the unlimited fruit the girl had although we can speculate it may have been excessive as we haven't been told, but, frankly, calling the OP smug is not helpful.
