to give access to unlimited fruit but virtually no sugar or juice

I give my DC access to virtually unlimted fruit but they rarely have sugar or proccesed foods and no sugary drinks. I find with fruit it is easy to self regulate and that's not something most people can do with processed foods. Had a sleepover and when I told the mum how much fruit her dd had eaten she looked horrified as if I had given her poison. When I know my dd had beans on toast (sugar) with orange juice and ice cream. I found this less than ideal but I said nothing.

Aibu or is she?

Forbidden foods are always the most attractive though - I remember gorging on white processed bread the first time I was given it at a friend's house and thinking how lucky she was to have that wonderful stuff every day - I was about 7.

BuzzardBird · 08/03/2015 15:39

My Dsis made herself very overweight as a child by eating unregulated oranges. She could easily eat 8 a day, no sweets or treats were allowed but she was allowed to eat as many oranges as she liked as my Mother thought they were healthy.

I thought people knew better now?

ThoughtsPlease · 08/03/2015 15:46

How does at the most 8 oranges a day make someone very overweight?

IAmNotAMindReader · 08/03/2015 15:49

YABU far too much acid and sugar in the fruit.

Limit the fruit and introduce vegetables, then you would have a right to feel smug and self righteous enough to be able to crow about it without getting shot down Grin

Carrot battons
Sliced peppers
Celery
Spring onions
Broccoli
Peeled cucumber in a balsamic dressing.

Now those are the things worthy of a bussom hoike.

BuzzardBird · 08/03/2015 15:51

Thoughts, I was really confused too, but it happened. My Mum thought she was doing the right thing but she ended up with terrible teeth and really overweight. I know no other high calorie foods were involved because we were not bought them and lived in the middle of nowhere.

BuzzardBird · 08/03/2015 15:53

Sometimes it was more than 8, but 8 was about average. There are around 90 cals in a large orange so between 700 and 800 cals a day more than she needed I guess?

Enjoyingmycoffee1981 · 08/03/2015 16:00

This smacks to me of a bored OP trying to think of an interesting post to get a discussion going.

She looked "horrified"? I call bullshit on that.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 08/03/2015 16:18

Fruit still contains calories and a good dollop of sugar. Sugar isn't great for children's teeth and clearly you don't want them eating tonnes of extra calories, even if it is in the form of fruit.

In our house we have a mix, nothing is banned but everything is limited at some point. We have McDonalds sometimes, we have home cooked food, we have freezer stuff, we have takeaway, there's fruit in the bowl and veggies in the fridge. We have squash, fruit juice, milk, water. DD likes all these things and we try to help her regulate what's the best combination. She once ate a fair few clementines and had a dodgy tummy, so knows that too much fruit isn't always a good thing Blush

Summeblaze · 08/03/2015 16:48

Sounds exactly the same as my house Purplecrazy and you said what I was trying I say much better.

Moderation in everything.

livefastlove · 08/03/2015 16:56

Ah I remember the days when fruit was healthy and wholemeal bread and yoghurt, simpler times, jumpers for goal posts etc.

306235388 · 08/03/2015 17:11

Why were you telling her what she'd eaten? In that situation id maybe say 'oh she enjoyed her dinner' but I wouldn't list everything she'd consumed - maybe that's why she looked at you oddly!

Bluepants · 08/03/2015 17:17

Think the mum would have been thinking diahorrea. A sleepovers I do pizzas with carrot/cucumber/cherry tomatoes and strawberries/blueberries and loads of cake. So kind of a balance. One child came and ate the entire dish of blueberries (intended for 6 people). I was really worried about him crapping himself!

306235388 · 08/03/2015 17:23

Hence the name bluepants?

PilchardPrincess · 08/03/2015 18:03

YY my dad would think the same bluepants.

Lots of fruit obviously has a very profound effect on his guts Grin

Actually my mum as well will say when I pick them up - "They've had lots of fruit. I hope they'll be alright"...!

ConeyIslandPeach · 08/03/2015 18:06

unlimited fruit is just as bad as sugary drinks and processed food.

It's really not.

I don't like this person but Freelee the Banana Girl has a great figure from just eating fruit.

ConeyIslandPeach · 08/03/2015 18:13

The sugar in fruit is called FRUCTOSE! It's not like normal white sugar.

ConeyIslandPeach · 08/03/2015 18:18

Michael Arnstein eats most fruit. Advocates a raw diet. I find it quite annoying this ignorant view that fruit is bad for you etc

Koalafications · 08/03/2015 18:18

But ANY sugar is evil and their tooth enamel will be eroded at the first bite ConeyIslandPeach

cashewnutty · 08/03/2015 18:28

OP - everyone knows that at a sleepover a child must consume their own bodyweight in Haribo. This is why the child's mother looked horrified. Grin

Bluepants · 08/03/2015 20:17

Grin name is a funny coincidence that I hadn't noticed!

Pomegranatemolasses · 08/03/2015 20:43

Well unlimiited fructose is not a good thing. I don't think I'd be bragging about it.

There is quite a smug tone to the op's posts. It's not just an orange, it's a blood orange etc. Maybe the mum was worried about the airmiles?

Next time you should offer them unlimited access to heirloom apple varieties, cob nuts and elderberries.

26Point2Miles · 08/03/2015 20:52

A raw diet is very different to just unlimited fruit tho

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 08/03/2015 20:54

I suspect the mum just wondered why she being spoken to as though the OP had just invented fruit or something.

ConeyIslandPeach · 08/03/2015 20:56

Well unlimited fructose is not a good thing

Actually it is. The raw food movement is amazing.

Look at the diet of the countries with the lowest cancer rate. Such as Gambia and Nepal - all raw foods diet.

We have a high obesity rate. So theres needs to be a hell of lot of education happening - not just - don't eat too much fruit its bad for you!

SuburbanRhonda · 08/03/2015 20:57

I thought that, pomegranate.

No Golden Delicious in OP's house, I'll bet Grin
