to give access to unlimited fruit but virtually no sugar or juice

I give my DC access to virtually unlimted fruit but they rarely have sugar or proccesed foods and no sugary drinks. I find with fruit it is easy to self regulate and that's not something most people can do with processed foods. Had a sleepover and when I told the mum how much fruit her dd had eaten she looked horrified as if I had given her poison. When I know my dd had beans on toast (sugar) with orange juice and ice cream. I found this less than ideal but I said nothing.

Aibu or is she?

too much fruit will ruin your teeth. veg is a better snack.

One of my friends is vegan and used to be overweight, she was referred to a NHS dietician who said that the excess of fruit was contributing to her weight problem.

cleanmyhouse · 08/03/2015 21:12

You gave your child redbush? Ouch.

PilchardPrincess · 08/03/2015 21:13

Unlimited fructose isn't a good thing Grin

It's still sugar. It's still "empty calories". The reason fruit is "good" is because of the vitamins and fibre. Fruit juice has the sugars, flavour, vitamins (more or less?) but is not considered "good" as you get all the sugar and acid and none of the "roughage".

Statements like "unlimited fructose is a good thing" are ludicrous.

Can diabetics have unlimited fructose?
What is high fructose corn syrup made of?

Pomegranatemolasses · 08/03/2015 21:42

Exactly princess. I can't stand this sanctimonious crap about using agave nectar or even xylitol, and thinking that the body is going to respond to these sugars in a totally different way.

I know the Op is probably acting in good faith with her "no sugar but tons of fruit" regime, but there's a deadly combination out there of manipulative producers and deluded consumers.

PilchardPrincess · 08/03/2015 21:48

All just fads isn't it.

Stick to a balanced diet, try to avoid stuff that's been fucked around with too much, or has too many unproven / dodgy ingredients, do a bit of exercise, and voila, all good.

alrayyan · 09/03/2015 06:18

The veg was steamed. Thank God for that. We had pizza hut and full fat Pepsi for tea. sorry just need to balance out the food fuss. its true about the pizza though. Wink Wink

sPJPPp · 09/03/2015 06:26

Smug for steaming veg and having blood oranges? Some of you do have a a massive chip.

I clearly need to do more research then. I have been following the specialist dentist that my son was referred to. He told us that whole fruit is not a problem at all as it releases sugar in the stomach and not the mouth - it will not affect teeth. He said no milk or any other sugar unless with a meal when the saliva can break it down. Even then you should limit sugar and milk. That was two years ago - has it all changed or are there any dentists here who can verify please?

wawabear · 09/03/2015 07:00

Did someone say massive chips? That's a whole other debate isn't it? Meanwhile you're all making me hungry, I'm off for a banana and strawberry smoothie (not homemade) or maybe a portion of massive chips!

Mehitabel6 · 09/03/2015 07:11

If you have everything in moderation you can't go wrong- that includes fruit.

angstyaunty · 09/03/2015 08:59

I have enamel erosion on one of my top front teeth, from eating apples! My dentist said that pattern of erosion is quite common. She said rather than avoid apples, I should cut them up and chew them with my back teeth. It's not specifically the acid that's the problem, it's the pressure of the acid against my front tooth when I bite into an apple.

angstyaunty · 09/03/2015 09:00

I meant acidic fruit sugars, rather than acid.

Summeblaze · 10/03/2015 07:13

Not smug for giving them that food but smug for coming on here and telling everyone about it. Starts with b and end with ragging.

YABU for giving your child unlimited anything if that means they eat tonnes of it. Fruit here is available here at all times if they want a snack but if I found they were munching it all day every day then it would be limited. Fortunately my DC have a healthy and varied diet which includes fruit, chocolate, veg and massive chips.

sPJPPp · 12/03/2015 07:04

But by offering fruit with no limit they get the fiber and fill up so don't over eat as long as the rest of their diet is balanced. Whole fruit is fine for death, juice isn't. I can't believe some people limit fruit to 1-2 bits a day

tobysmum77 · 12/03/2015 07:37

yabu I think. No one could afford the fruit bill if my dds 'self regulated'.

tobysmum77 · 12/03/2015 07:39

why the obsession with overeating? Dd1 would happily just eat fruit if I let her. that would lead to undereating.

sPJPPp · 21/03/2015 07:58

Anyone watched the truth about sugar on BBC? Basically it said I was right about not limiting fruit and refined sugar is the one to be avoided.

All these people claiming their DC is able to regulate sugar is very strange as its hard wired in our body to crave it. Looks like very very wishful thinking.

Yes this is a smug post. Its on the iPlayer.

stilllearnin · 21/03/2015 08:03

Ah thanks for the reminder I'll watch it. My ds has no sugar accept fruit. He does this precisely because he cannot control it otherwise. He is 14 so decided this himself.

stilllearnin · 21/03/2015 08:04

Blimey! Except, I meant - pass me a mars bar!

GinAndSonic · 21/03/2015 08:17

Biscuit Grin

sPJPPp · 21/03/2015 08:31

I made my own raw vegan Mars bars yesterday, sweetened only with dates and coconut blossom. High in sugar so still a treat, but was just walnuts, pecans, cocanibs and coconut oil so packed with nutrients also. Difficult to over eat on them.

OP posts:
LittleBearPad · 21/03/2015 08:49

No you didn't. They weren't Mars bars, whatever they were. There may also have been another reason it was difficult to over eat on them.

QueenBean · 21/03/2015 08:55

Ooh coconut blossom, what a treat! Chuck the family sized dairy milk in the bin, I have some cocao nibs ready to go!

Think we've got to the bottom of why the other mother was "horrified"

anotherdayanothersquabble · 21/03/2015 08:57

I would love the recipe for the vegan no sugar Mars Bars please?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 21/03/2015 09:01

They sound nice but expensive ingredients I imagine.
