many people here have no idea what it's like to have money worries

suzzieanneba46 · 07/03/2015 08:47

There seems to be a huge divide on here with many clearly having no clue what its like to have money problems. I do ok, I manage a good life but all it takes is a few bad events and my finances are in tatters. Loads of people that suggested I shouldn't fly because I wanted to save some money by avoiding ridiculous airport parking fees. When you have been forced to start putting everything on a credit card and know you won't be able to pay it off for months and will have to pay eye watering interest, then yes 50 pounds is a lot of money!

When you are being forced to pay for everything on a credit card and rack up mountains of debt then is going on holiday the best idea?

Weebirdie · 07/03/2015 08:50

I think its precisely because people know what it is to have money worries that they'll query the 50 pounds.

But are you the lady who was going to park a couple of miles from the airport in a random street in order to save the 50 pounds parking fee?

I don't have much money therefore we don't go on holiday.

Well yes, there are quite a few people like that in general, not just on MN. But they are in the minority - most people know exactly how it feels to have to scrape by from one week to the next with no contingency fund at some point in their lives.

I manage a good life but all it takes is a few bad events and my finances are in tatters.

I think you've just described most people, to be honest.

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about now. Confused

LaurieFairyCake · 07/03/2015 08:54

If someone had money problems they wouldn't be flying anywhere on holiday. Hmm There are many, many breadline Mumsnetters who aren't going anywhere.

Saving £50 is fine. But it's just an illusion that that £50 won't be spent somewhere else like a meal out etc.

I haven't read your other thread but when it comes to parking it really only matters of its legal. Discourtesy is a matter of personal decision.

SukieTuesday · 07/03/2015 08:55

Does TAAT count if it's the same OP?

suzzieanneba46 · 07/03/2015 08:55

Maybe if you don't have psychic powers then you shouldn't assume things.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/03/2015 08:55

X-posted. You could have said you weren't going on holiday in your OP.

Pipbin · 07/03/2015 08:56

You can fucking do one with your attitude quite frankly.

suzzieanneba46 · 07/03/2015 08:57

This isn't about parking, that's done. Its about money and the lack of empathy some people show, with thinking 50 isn't much money.

I lived in £20 food money for everything per week for the last 5 years. Only now my dh job is settled are things looking up. I understand and i think you find alot of mntters live on the same amount and less. We lived in london and he got told you lucky we paying you when he started as its a so called professional job but you need experience. Living in london renting on the money we had coming in was impossible and tbh we were lucky that my mil uses to arrive with food parcels. It was a worry that i still cant get out of my head. Im an expert at making £1 do £10 worth of work. Im so frightened that it could all happen again as looking back ive no idea how we coped. Im building up a safety net now.

NotGoingOut17 · 07/03/2015 08:58

No need for that Op...are we meant to be psychic? You are assuming that Pipbin has read your other thread. Based on what you have written in your op only her question is perfectly valid.

londonrach · 07/03/2015 08:58

But if you had no money you dont go on holiday....simple. If no money finding bus fare is hard so you walk!

HeisenbergsBlueMeth · 07/03/2015 08:59

There are plenty of people on here that struggle.

If you want to park and walk to the airport just do it, who cares what strangers on the internet think about your choice?

CrystalCove · 07/03/2015 09:00

OP not everyone here will have read your other thread about airport parking,

NerrSnerr · 07/03/2015 09:02

OP- there's no reason why people would have read your other thread so wouldn't know it wasn't a holiday. There is no need to be so aggressive.

Pipbin · 07/03/2015 09:02

10p is a lot of money when you don't have it.

I do actually agree with you op that some people in life, not just MN have no idea what it is like to be skint. 'Just pay the £50' isn't helpful when you don't have £50.

However I don't appreciate being told to fuck off for not having read your other thread.

Jackieharris · 07/03/2015 09:03

Yes, even though we are living in the age of austerity and millions are in poverty and struggling there are still millions who lead very comfortable lives.

There are peo

Charlotte3333 · 07/03/2015 09:03

I regularly see posts on here from people who genuinely do understand what it feels like to struggle financially. So I think for the most part Mumsnetters do know the value of money.

Telling people to fuck off when you've asked for their opinion is pretty harsh, though.

Jackieharris · 07/03/2015 09:03

People who have never had to budget in their lives.

AJNH · 07/03/2015 09:04

Well this is going up in flames, again...

Weebirdie · 07/03/2015 09:04

This isn't about parking, that's done. Its about money and the lack of empathy some people show, with thinking 50 isn't much money.

I read the first few posts in your previous thread then didn't bother reading any further, and it was only mention of 50 pounds in this OP that made me think you were the person posting about parking.

And judging from your replies on this thread alone, let alone the heading, I think you get the empathy you deserve because you do seem to have quite a knack for pissing people off.

popalot · 07/03/2015 09:04

We get a taxi to the airport, but it's only half an hour away. Could you get a coach or train?

You can't really assume people don't have money troubles too. We all do at some point in our lives. Some people appear to be rolling in it, but actually have money tied up here, there and everywhere and on paper are in more debt than I am, who lives a simple life without a credit card (not allowed one, income too low!!).

If I can't afford it, I can't buy it. That's how I live my life, because otherwise it's too stressful. been in debt before and it can quickly spiral out of control. I found making an excel spreadsheet, with all my ingoings and outgoings was the way forward. I could then predict next month's spendings and adjust accordingly where I needed to (a little less on food if ballet fees were due ect).

Funnily enough, now I have a DP with a better income, I end up spending more and have less money at the end of the month than when I was single on housing benefit and having to scrabble and save. I think I had to be more savvy then and now I'm a bit too lax. Must get that spreadsheet open again and see where I'm going wrong...!
