www.telegraph.co.uk/news/religion/11433776/Quarter-of-British-Muslims-sympathise-with-Charlie-Hebdo-terrorists.html

I think this study is worrying and also fantastic at the same time.

Worrying over the Charlie Hebdo 27%. But fantastic that 93% feel british.

Wow Skipton what a well thought out post, you have clearly and concisely put down what I thought. Can I quote you?

sunabroad · 25/02/2015 21:02

What a load of crap from the Telegraph!

I don't believe a word of their so call poll. It has so obviously been manipulated.

sunabroad · 25/02/2015 21:05

This is very very worrying too:

More than two in five (46%) feel that being a Muslim in Britain is difficult due to prejudice against Islam.

Inabitoftyhme · 25/02/2015 21:07

I'm sorry but why does Islam get special treatment. Charlie Hebdo is a satire magazine that draws every faith.

I find it difficult to believe that 5 yr old UK Muslim school children cheered when they heard about 9/11. 5 yr olds can barely comprehend what that means.
Every single Muslim I know were extremely shocked that day.

As far as that survey is concerned, if take that with a punch of salt too. Yes, Muslims do find depictions of their prophet in porn poses offensive but the reaction I've seen mostly is shock at the murders and anger that people who claim to be Muslims commit atrocities and then make life difficult for the majority of Muslims who just want to get in with their lives peacefully.

LeSaor · 25/02/2015 21:09

It's not even "forbidden in Islam" to draw Mohammed, it was done for centuries until batshit Wahabbists started promoting the idea that literally everything is haram.

IMO we should be able to mock Christianity, Islam etc just as much as Scientology or Raelism (which nobody gives a shit about mocking) because they're equally ridiculous. The fact that a whole lot of people honestly believe that snakes can talk or Mohammed flew around on a flying horse shouldn't make those beliefs uncriticisable.

Justanotherlurker · 25/02/2015 21:12

Acts of violence against those who publish images of the prophet Mohammad can never be justified - Agree 68%, Disagree 24%, Don't know 6%

That 24% is worrying

Inabitoftyhme · 25/02/2015 21:13

I also find people who are saying freedom of speech has limits as shocking. We either have FULL freedom of speech or North Korea because once you are going down a dangerous path if you limit freedom of speech. Why do you think je suis Charlie was everywhere after the attack because it represented an attack on are freedom of speech which in my opinion is one of the best bits of this country and the west.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/one-in-four-british-muslims-have-some-sympathy-for-motives-behind-charlie-hebdo-attacks-10068440.html

It is not torygraph rubbish it is a general you gov poll the same as general election and any other study.

OP posts:
Inabitoftyhme · 25/02/2015 21:20

Also to dismiss the telegraph as bias but not the guardian or idependent is also very dangerous because every newspaper has a bias.

OP posts:
Hathall · 25/02/2015 21:21

I totally believe in freedom of speech but I don't understand the point of just insulting people and their beliefs.

Where would be as a society if we all just mocked and insulted each other? Let's all mock Christians, insult Jews and ridicule gay people.
It would be a horrible society to be in.
I'd rather live where there was a general respect for people.

Inabitoftyhme · 25/02/2015 21:25

Hathall that's not the point. Most people do not insult each other even if they do it is their view and they have a right to hold it. Would you rather have a censor on anything offensive so most comedians and family guy would be gone then.

OP posts:
Hathall · 25/02/2015 21:31

No of course I wouldn't.
I'd just like to see people being generally respectful in society. You'll always get people on the fringes which is fine as long as there's a commonly held view that's it's not really right to offend and upset people for the sake of it or entertainment value.

LeSaor · 25/02/2015 21:32

Mocking someone's chosen belief systems and insulting people based on their inherent sexualities are not the same thing FFS. I mock UKIP and I'd laugh at a cartoon mocking it but I don't go round saying "Oi Jim, you one of those UKIPs?" and start slagging him off personally about it. Just because we're talking about CELESTIAL rather than earthly bullshit lies shouldn't make it suddenly taboo.

Hathall · 25/02/2015 21:33

Humour is different so I wouldn't put family guy or citizen khan in the same bracket as something offensive.

Inabitoftyhme · 25/02/2015 21:35

Well Charlie Hebdo is no different to family guy.

OP posts:
LeSaor · 25/02/2015 21:37

Family Guy offends me. We have to ban it now.

Inabitoftyhme · 25/02/2015 21:37

I don't get why Muslims can't laugh a long with Charlie Hebdo. I laugh at cartoons mocking God and I'm a person of faith. I'm sure whatever God there is will find the cartoons funny as well.

OP posts:
Inabitoftyhme · 25/02/2015 21:38

Lasaor maybe try and mellow out abit and stop taking offence at everything. Laughter is the voice of the soul.

OP posts:
geekymommy · 25/02/2015 21:40

How was this poll worded? You could interpret "magazines which publish images of the Prophet Mohammed 'deserve to be attacked.'" to mean that someone should send a strongly worded letter to the editor, write an editorial saying it was wrong for them to do what they did, or boycott companies that advertise in the magazine. Things like wording do have an effect on opinion polls.

Some percentage of Christians and Jews would also say that modern secular society is incompatible with Christianity or Judaism (at least as they think it should be practiced). That doesn't mean they're planning terrorist attacks. Nor does saying that there is prejudice against Muslims. That can mean a lot of different things.

Hathall · 25/02/2015 21:40

Personally, I think Charlie hebdos cartoons were awful. Not just the ones depicting the prophet but some other ones too. I could not see the humour in the holy trinity all buggering each other or the prophet showing his arse in poem poses.
There were some which were humorous too. But that's my opinion of course. You may find them hilarious.

Inabitoftyhme · 25/02/2015 21:42

Hathall it's not about them being offensive or funny it's there right to say it that needs protecting.

OP posts:
ghostyslovesheep · 25/02/2015 21:43

because, as stated, Islam prohibits the portrayal of images of Mohammed - it's why you have such wonderful patterns in Mosques and buildings rather than the pictures you have in churches

It's not just poking fun - it's doing the one thing that they know will deeply offend people

I don't think Muslims lack a sense of humour

Inabitoftyhme · 25/02/2015 21:44

If all cartoons depicting mohammaded stopped being published than the terrorists have one.
