Obamacare.

TwoOddSocks · 25/02/2015 09:50

Second obamacare. Having access to healthcare has a pretty significant effect on people's lives.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 25/02/2015 09:53

The problem is he seems to be thwarted at every turn. Obamacare will be his legacy but even that has been a huge fight. When he was voted in, it wasn't just that he was black that was unexpected that he was so liberal. The USA is very conservative. I like him.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 25/02/2015 09:54
  • it was him being so liberal
ChoochiWoo · 25/02/2015 09:58

Obamacare? So is he dismantling the old health system ? *will have to Google

Not dismantling as such but making it easier for Americans who can't afford insurance to get treatment.

Nolim · 25/02/2015 10:04

To dismantle somenthing it has to exist first. It is not a system per se but free market for health care.

Under the old system you either have insurance or if say a car hits you you can loose your home due to hospital bills.

ChoochiWoo · 25/02/2015 10:05

Its still pretty flat , state by state arent all enforced to take part in medicaid and 30 million will still likely be uncovered.

OP posts:
gallicgirl · 25/02/2015 10:06

Millions more Americans are covered by health insurance thanks to Obamacare.
Lots of states have legislated in favour of gay marriage following support from White House.
He's currently trying to improve maternity leave and pay. Also trying to push through legislation to allow people who entered the country illegally as a child to stay under certain conditions.

cozietoesie · 25/02/2015 10:08

Here's a recent article, Choochi. I'm sorry that it's studded with adverts.

gallicgirl · 25/02/2015 10:09

www.whitehouse.gov/issues

Plenty of info there.

ChoochiWoo · 25/02/2015 10:10

The media must have a slight angle perhaps, I only see him being a bit show offy on tv, like I said above, how many were uncovered before OB care?

Obama annoys me. I ended up renouncing my US citizenship because he's made life for expats so difficult. Grin Angry

Nolim · 25/02/2015 10:17

In terms of taxes or something else taz?

Taz1212 · 25/02/2015 10:20

Tax reporting, Nolim, even if you don't owe tax. Plus, if you want to invest in any sort of stocks and shares investment in the UK now, you need to declare that you are not a US person because quite rightly UK companies don't want the hassle of dealing with FATCA (tax reporting). I could do a very very long rant but will restrain myself. Grin

Nolim · 25/02/2015 10:23

But is it something new? I have heard similar stuff for years.

lertgush · 25/02/2015 11:11

ChoochiWoo · 25/02/2015 11:23

I think his preoccupation with looking cool makes people take him less seriously.

Obama is so fit.
misses point of thread

keepitsimple0 · 25/02/2015 11:30

FATCA is newish. But taxing non-residents isn't.

It's ridiculous actually. The US tax system is a massive mess. It is so full of loopholes and regulations that tax compliance in the US is a non-negligible part of the GDP.

britbat · 25/02/2015 11:44

Biggest thing he's done? Keeping USA out of a new wars.

2.5 MILLION American servicemen and women fought in Iraq and/or Afghanistan.

Imagine how many more would have been sent off to Libya, Syria, etc, under a Republican president.

I'm not sure that Obama could be considered "liberal" given that he's launched more drones than Bush and his defense of eroding civil liberties viz Prism etc.
